The Politics Of Public Health: A Response To Epstein, Lawrence O. Gostin, Maxwell Gregg Bloche Jan 2003

The Politics Of Public Health: A Response To Epstein, Lawrence O. Gostin, Maxwell Gregg Bloche

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Conservatives are taking aim at the field of public health, targeting its efforts to understand and control environmental and social causes of disease. Richard Epstein and others contend that these efforts in fact undermine people’s health and well-being by eroding people’s incentives to create economic value. Public health, they argue, should stick to its traditional task—the struggle against infectious diseases. Because markets are not up to the task of controlling the transmission of infectious disease, Epstein says, coercive government action is required. But market incentives, not state action, he asserts, represent our best hope for controlling the chronic illnesses that …

Rogue Science, Maxwell Gregg Bloche Jan 2003

Rogue Science, Maxwell Gregg Bloche

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This review essay considers the tension between the evidence-driven vision of science's mission and the fears of malicious use and terrible consequences that have come to the fore since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. These fears have led some to call for government restrictions on the substance of scientific research and communication. In general, this approach is likely to do far more harm than good. But scientists need to take the problem of social consequences more seriously than they have so far. The author argues in this essay that in some circumstances, when rogue use of science can …

Studies On Potential Of Companion Crops In Managing The Diamondback Moth, Plutella Xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) In Cabbage/Kale Cropping Systems In Kenya, Jacqueline Makatiani

All Master’s Theses

The diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) is a major pest and threat to brassica production in many parts of Africa. The adverse ecological and environmental effects as well as the cost of chemical pesticides that are commonly used in its control, besides the increasing resistance to chemicals makes it necessary to explore alternative control methods. Integrated Pest Management (IPM), being the emerging pest control paradigm, offers a number of options out of which biocontrol, companion cropping among others, have great potentials. This study investigated the potential of utilising companion vegetable crops as trap or repellent crops in …

Childhood Depression And Resiliency : An Evaluation Of The Devereux Early Childhood Assessment Program, Sarah Carroll Jones Jan 2003

Childhood Depression And Resiliency : An Evaluation Of The Devereux Early Childhood Assessment Program, Sarah Carroll Jones

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Some researchers have investigated the use of resiliency-building programs to prevent childhood depression in at risk populations (Comer, 1985; Gladstone & Beardslee, 2000; Seligman, 1995). The following study investigates the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment Program (DECA). The DECA Program is designed to build resiliency in preschool children by increasing factors that have been found to be related to resiliency: initiative, self-control, and attachment. The study evaluated the short-term effectiveness of the DECA Program. Two Head Start Centers participated in the study. Pretest DECA rating scales were completed by the classroom teachers. For the next three months the experimental classrooms used …

Ergot Alkaloids And Herbivory In Model Animals, And, Variation In An Ergot Alkaloid Biosynthesis Gene., Andrea B. Sedlock

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Neotyphodium spp. are members of the fungal family Clavicipitaceae that grow endophytically within several important forage grasses, imparting benefits to the host grass. Several species produce toxic ergopeptines that are thought to adversely affect mammalian health. Inclusion of 1% agar in endophyte-infected seed diets was found to ameliorate some of the consequences of feeding endophyte-infected seeds to mice. Based upon feeding preferences of rabbits and mice, it seems that ergot alkaloids are not critical factors for deterring feeding on endophyte-infected plants by these animals, but the presence of the fungus appeared to deter rabbits. Intron-containing fragments of lysergyl peptide synthetase …

Gender, Work, And The Nafta Labor Side Agreement, Kate Andrias Jan 2003

Gender, Work, And The Nafta Labor Side Agreement, Kate Andrias

Faculty Scholarship

It has been nearly ten years since the public debate over the North American Free Trade Agreement ("NAFTA") and the advent of trade liberalization with America's neighbors to the north and south. In the years since NAFTA's signing in 1993, economic globalization has fundamentally changed our conception of the nation-state, citizenship, trade, and work. Economic life in the United States now involves massive cross-border capital and labor flows, and integrated cross-border production chains, particularly with our trading partners in NAFTA. We have seen greater trade liberalization throughout the world, the ascendance of transnational organizations like the World Trade Organization, recurrent …

Environmental Impacts Of Modern Agricultural Technology Diffusion In Bangladesh: An Analysis Of Farmers' Perceptions And Their Determinants, S Rahman Jan 2003

Environmental Impacts Of Modern Agricultural Technology Diffusion In Bangladesh: An Analysis Of Farmers' Perceptions And Their Determinants, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Farmers' perception of the environmental impacts of modern agricultural technology diffusion and factors determining such awareness were examined using survey data from 21 villages in three agro-ecological regions of Bangladesh. Results reveal that farmers are well aware of the adverse environmental impacts of modern agricultural technology, although their awareness remains confined within visible impacts such as soil fertility, fish catches, and health effects. Their perception of intangible impacts such as, toxicity in water and soils is weak. Level and duration of modern agricultural technology adoption directly influence awareness of its adverse effects. Education and extension contacts also play an important …

Drug Benefit Plans For Elderly Under Managed Care And Utilization Of Lipid Lowering Agents, Susan M. Abughosh

Open Access Dissertations

Many health maintenance organizations (HMOs) have implemented programs providing varying degrees of annual drug coverage for Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in their plans. Older adult plan members in an HMO operating in central Massachusetts were able to choose among 3 drug benefit options starting January 1, 1994: full coverage for prescription drugs, a maximum of $1000/year in coverage, or no drug coverage. As such, cost containment policies have been shown to affect prescription drug use and other types of health service utilization. The unintended effects of this policy are important to consider. This research investigated the effects of type of drug …

The Influence Of Cognitive Reserve On Neuropsychological Functioning After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Susan Anne Legendre Jan 2003

The Influence Of Cognitive Reserve On Neuropsychological Functioning After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting, Susan Anne Legendre

Open Access Dissertations

Neuropsychological functioning is negatively affected in many individuals who undergo coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). However, the degree and consistency of this impairment is variable. Research in the fields of Alzheimer's disease and HIV suggests that the impact of various assaults to the central nervous system may be mediated through some form of cognitive reserve. The concept of cognitive reserve (CR) is based on the hypothesis that an individual's genetic make-up or experiences acquired throughout life, such as educational and occupational attainment, provide a reserve which allows an individual to sustain greater cerebral injury before clinical presentation of dysfunction. The …

The Nutritional Ecology Of Songbirds: How Food Quality, Diet Preferences, And Food Limitation Influence Nutrient Storage And Use During Migration, Barbara Jean Pierce Jan 2003

The Nutritional Ecology Of Songbirds: How Food Quality, Diet Preferences, And Food Limitation Influence Nutrient Storage And Use During Migration, Barbara Jean Pierce

Open Access Dissertations

Birds during migration alternate between periods of fasting during active flight and then intense re-feeding at stopover sites as they prepare for their next flight. At stopover sites, birds must select foods that satisfy their elevated nutrient and energy requirements even though food quantity and quality at these sites is often unpredictable. The primary goals of my research were to (1) examine the effects of food quality, food quantity, and digestive physiology on the dynamics of nutrient reserves in a small migratory songbird, (2) determine how nutrient preferences and diet influence the composition of nutrient reserves in a small migratory …
