In Situ Degradability Of Native Pastures In Llamas (Lama Glama) In The Rainy Season In The Community Of Pujrata, Pacajes Province, Mario Acho Nina

Theses and Dissertations

The llama (lama glama) in the Bolivian Highlands region is a most important potential resource from the socio-economic point of view for the dedicated producer to the management and exploitation of these Andean camelids, considered as national heritage of our country. The llama is completely adapted to the high plateau system, being considered a three purposed animal in this environment: producer of fiber, meat and work (load). However, due to the expansion of sheep and cattle, they have been marginalized to the poor areas, where they prosper well because they are rustic, sober and greatly efficient in the conversion of …

Determination Of Home Techniques For Storing And Conserving Food In The Homes Of Cuambo And La Rinconada In Imbabura Province, 2001-2002, Marisol Caicedo Barrios

Theses and Dissertations

In Ecuador, there is a grave socioeconomic nutritional problem, and it is seen clearest in Imbabura province in the communities of Cuambo and La Rinconada. One of the biggest problems is inadequate food, due principally to the poor food storage and conservation habits. Considering this problem, it is necessary to deepen the knowledge of improved traditional techniques for storing and conserving food, through which families can store and manage their product better, controlling and avoiding losses due to insects, rodents, and climate, and guaranteeing conservation of the same. The investigation was oriented to implement alternative, improved storage and conservation technologies …

The Effectiveness Of Consuming Fortified Foods (Api) With Iron On The Anemia Ferropriva In Resident Students To Great Altitude Of The Rural Area Of The Departemento Of La Paz, Beatriz Julia Ramirez Copa

Theses and Dissertations

In many countries, the health and the development of a great number of people are compromised by the insufficient distribution of micro-nutrients. The deficiency of iron is one of the things that to a large extent contributes to the high rates of death and maternal and childhood mortality, affecting also a great percentage of school aged children. Bolivia, along with the majority of underdeveloped countries, presents high prevalence of anemia in the students. Recent studies confirm that anemia nutrients are a problem of public health of great magnitude to rural and urban level (Fernández et al, 1994). Before this situation …

The South Providence Kosher Meat Boycott Of 1910: A Study Of Jewish Women’S Consumer Activism, Kimberly Susan Nusco Jan 2003

The South Providence Kosher Meat Boycott Of 1910: A Study Of Jewish Women’S Consumer Activism, Kimberly Susan Nusco

Open Access Master's Theses

This thesis examines a kosher meat boycott in South Providence in 1910, placing this event in the broader context of Jewish immigrant women's activism around food issues and the popular strategy of consumer protest during the Progressive Era. Through an analysis of press accounts, census data, and community statistics, this study presents an analysis of the possible causes and impacts of this example of immigrant Jewish women's activism in early twentieth-century Providence.

As women serve as both preservers of culture and mediators of the outside world (as expressed through domestic consumption), such incidents as kosher meat boycotts provide an opportune …

An Introduction To Genetically Modified Foods, Kathleen Hart Jan 2003

An Introduction To Genetically Modified Foods, Kathleen Hart

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Thank you. I have been visiting a lot of bookstores since Eating in the Dark came out last year, including a wonderful bookstore, I should mention, which is right here in Richmond called the Fountain Bookstore. People often ask me if I’ve changed my diet as a result of what I learned while researching the book. Mainly, have I stopped eating genetically engineered foods? I always answer that I’m an American, so of course I eat genetically engineered foods because we have no choice in the matter. GM foods are ubiquitous in the processed foods, and they’re not labeled. But …

Remarks On Regulating Genetically Modified Foods In The United States, David Hegewood

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

I would like to thank the Richmond Journal of Law & Technology for inviting me this afternoon and for organizing this forum. I’ve never been on Crossfire, and it’s easy to see why Val has, so I probably won’t be quite as entertaining. In fact most of what I wanted to say this afternoon has already been said in one form or another. Val just stole the last one with the Watson and Crick Fiftieth Anniversary. What I want to do is maybe give you more of a sense of perspective and then go over some of the facts.

Fear And Loathing: The Modulatory Affect Of Stress On Memory Formation And Its Wildlife Management Implications, Arla G. Hile Jan 2003

Fear And Loathing: The Modulatory Affect Of Stress On Memory Formation And Its Wildlife Management Implications, Arla G. Hile

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

An ongoing challenge for wildlife managers is that target species habituate to or forget about hazing, even though the animals must be somewhat stressed by the hazing. Although stress and efficient memory formation/retrieval are considered to be incompatible, research suggests that the effect of stress on memory is complex. Mild and intense stress can impair memory formation and chronic stress can disrupt memory retrieval. Intermediate stress, however, actually enhances the formation of new memories, particularly long-term memories. Unfortunately, these conclusions are based data from only a very few domesticated species under highly controlled conditions. In nature the variation in baseline …

Biochemistry Of Ensiling, John A. Rooke, Ronald D. Hatfield Jan 2003

Biochemistry Of Ensiling, John A. Rooke, Ronald D. Hatfield

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The biochemistry of ensiling is essentially a simple process, which, however, can become complex when interactions among plant enzymes and the activities of numerous microbial species become involved. The desired effect is the conversion of simple plant sugars such as glucose and fructose to lactic acid by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in an anaerobic fermentation. When sufficient lactic acid has been produced, all microbial activity is suppressed, primarily through the effect of undissociated lactic acid, and the silage can then be stored anaerobically until required for feeding. Complications arise because:

1. There are always aerobic periods at the start and …

Detection Of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia Coli O157:H7 By Using A Multiplex Real-Time Pcr Assay For Genes Encoding Intimin And Shiga Toxins, Vijay K. Sharma, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

A multiplex real-time PCR (R-PCR) assay was designed and evaluated on the ABI 7700 sequence detection system (TaqMan) to detect enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 in pure cultures, feces, and tissues. Three sets of primers and fluorogenic probes were used for amplification and real-time detection of a 106-bp region of the eae gene encoding EHEC O157:H7-specific intimin, and 150-bp and 200-bp segments of genes stx1 and stx2 encoding Shiga toxins 1 and 2, respectively. Analysis of 67 bacterial strains demonstrated that the R-PCR assay successfully distinguished EHEC O157:H7 serotype from non-O157 serotypes and provided accurate profiling of genes encoding intimin …

Proposals To Expel Palestinians From The Occupied Territories As Catalyst For A Civil Adjudication Campaign, Catherine A. Rogers Jan 2003

Proposals To Expel Palestinians From The Occupied Territories As Catalyst For A Civil Adjudication Campaign, Catherine A. Rogers

Faculty Scholarship

I begin in Part II with a brief sketch of the history of stated policies to expel Palestinians from what is now Israel and the Occupied Territories, and then examine recent proposals that have been made and actions that have been taken to implement modern re-articulations of those historic policies. In Part III, I then review the grounds on which international law proscribes mass expulsions of indigenous and occupied peoples. While international law governing this issue is clear in its application and has been overwhelmingly endorsed by the larger international community, international law seems to have little influence on Israel's …

The principle factors in affect are, the best climatic conditions in Santa Cruz, while Cochabamba and La Paz have differences in seasonal changes (National Institute of Statistics, 1998). The importance of the tomato harvest lies in consumption …

Improving Design And Performance Of Group Lending: Suggestions From Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Barbara Mknelly Jan 2003

Improving Design And Performance Of Group Lending: Suggestions From Burkina Faso, Michael Kevane, Barbara Mknelly

Economics

We summarize lessons learned by a credit program for women in Burkina Faso. Three observations are made regarding program design: 1) high membership turnover means mutual guarantee groups should be smaller and more central to non-repayment penalties; 2) high turnover in economic activities implies more training in best practices and more variety and experimentation in credit and savings mechanisms; and 3) high degrees of stocking activity suggests the need to develop instruments to mitigate commodity price risk at the individual and program level. Three observations are made regarding program implementation: 1) be more consistent in the treatment of debts of …

Are Investments In Daughters Lower When Daughters Move Away? Evidence From Indonesia, Michael Kevane, David Levine Jan 2003

Are Investments In Daughters Lower When Daughters Move Away? Evidence From Indonesia, Michael Kevane, David Levine

Economics

In much of the developing world daughters receive lower education and other investments than do their brothers, and may even be so devalued as to suffer differential mortality. Daughter disadvantage may be due in part to social norms that prescribe that daughters move away from their natal family upon marriage, a practice known as virilocality. We evaluate the effects of virilocality on female disadvantage using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey. We find little support for the hypothesis. There is no evidence that the overall pattern of rough equality in the treatment of boys and girls in Indonesia masks …

Chemical Repellents For Reducing Crop Damage By Blackbirds, Michael L. Avery, John L. Cummings Jan 2003

Chemical Repellents For Reducing Crop Damage By Blackbirds, Michael L. Avery, John L. Cummings

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Chemical repellants are intended to prevent birds from feeding on a particular food (the crop) at a given location. To be considered effective, a chemical repellent must produce 1 of 2 responses (1) depredating birds remain but feed on an alternative non-crop food item or (2) depredating birds leavc and go elsewhere to feed. The search for a safe, cost-effective chemical repellent has spanned decades. During the 1950s, 196Os, and 199Os, repellent screening programs, using captive red-winged blackbirds (Aaelaius Dboeniceus), brown-headed cowbirds (Molorhrus ater), and European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), identified numerous potentially useful compounds. …
