Vitamin B12 And Mecadox® Supplementation In Weanling Pig Diets, Sara S. Blodgett, Phillip S. Miller, Robert Fischer

Nebraska Swine Reports

An experiment was conducted to assess the responsiveness of weanling pigs to an antibiotic-like compound (Mecadox®) and vitamin B12. Pigs (initial weight 11.3 lb) were fed one of four diets for a total of 35 days: 1) Negative control, common nursery diet with no added Mecadox® or vitamin12; 2) Mecadox®, common nursery diet with 50 g/ton added Mecadox®; 3)B12 common nursery diet with 36.28 µg/lb added vitamin B12. Pig weights and feed disappearance were measured weekly to determine average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feed efficiency (ADG/ADFI). Pigs were …

Do Crowded Pigs Respond To Paylean®?, Mike Brumm, Phillip S. Miller, Robert C. Thaler Jan 2003

Do Crowded Pigs Respond To Paylean®?, Mike Brumm, Phillip S. Miller, Robert C. Thaler

Nebraska Swine Reports

Paylean® is a feed additive that improves feed efficiency, daily gain and carcass merit in finishing pigs. Restrictions in space allocation are known to reduce daily feed intake and daily gain. Thus, pigs may not respond as expected to dietary additions of Paylean® if feed intake is reduced due to crowding. A 2 x 2 factorial design was used to examine the potential interaction of Paylean® and space allocation. Experimental treatments were: 1)14 or 19 pigs per pen (8.0 vs 5.9 ft2/pig); and 2) Paylean® for four weeks prior to slaughter (0 or 9 g/T). In this experiment, …

Faculty Publications

Objective: To determine if adult female rats adapt to lower and higher dietary energy density. Research Methods and Procedures: Study 1 compared high-fat (56%), high-energy density (HD) (21.6 kJ/g) and high-fat (56%), low-energy density (LD) (16.0 kJ/g) diets before surgery (two groups, 2 weeks, n = 16) and after surgery [ovariectomy (O) Sham (S); 2 X 2 factorial, n = 8; 6 weeks]. The second study (no surgery) compared high-fat (60.0%), high-energy (22.0 kJ/g) and low-fat (10.0%), low-energy (15.1 kJ/g) diets (n = 8). Results: In study 1, food intake was similar for the first 2 weeks, but rats on …

Legislating With Integrity, Jeremy Waldron Jan 2003

Legislating With Integrity, Jeremy Waldron

Faculty Articles

I am happy to participate in this symposium honoring the work of John Feerick. My title is "Legislating with Integrity," and I want to distinguish it immediately from a title that I had thought about addressing in this panel, "Integrity in Legislation." If I had called the talk "Integrity in Legislation," I might have embarked on a discussion of some of the themes that Ronald Dworkin raised in his book Law's Empire, for although integrity-a central theme in Dworkin's recent jurisprudence-is invoked in that book largely as a value associated with judicial reasoning, Dworkin also applies the idea of integrity …

The United Nations And The Magna Carta For Children, Winston E. Langley Jan 2003

The United Nations And The Magna Carta For Children, Winston E. Langley

McCormack Graduate School General Publications (active until 2013)

The impulse that invited the preparation of this book is one which is linked to the convergence of a number of factors bearing on my interest in human rights. First, the brutality visited on children during World War II has had an abiding negative effect on my sense of what is possible in human conduct. Second, I am persuaded that children are not simply the means by which human societies are continued, but, as well, the potential source of moral revitalization and transformation for those societies. Third, I recognize that the human rights movement, which followed World War II, holds …

Uncoiling The Gut Of Eleutherodactylus Coqui: Characterization Of The Anatomical Development And Proliferation Pattern, Carrie Elizabeth Langer Jan 2003

Uncoiling The Gut Of Eleutherodactylus Coqui: Characterization Of The Anatomical Development And Proliferation Pattern, Carrie Elizabeth Langer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Among the frogs there are two forms of development: biphasic and direct. Xenopus laevis, a biphasic developer, develops from an embryo into a tadpole, and then metamorphoses into an adult frog. Eleutherodactylus coqui is a direct developer, meaning that it lacks a tadpole stage. The embryo develops directly into the adult form. Comparing development between these two frogs provides insight on the evolution of these groups. I present an anatomical description of the gut development of E. coqui, and compare my findings to the development of X. laevis. E. coqui does not have a highly coiled gut like that of …

Effects Of Ginko Biloba On Memory In Rats For Maze Tricks, Christopher Deleon Jan 2003

Effects Of Ginko Biloba On Memory In Rats For Maze Tricks, Christopher Deleon

Modern Psychological Studies

Previous studies have investigated the effects of an extract of ginkgo biloba on acquisition, performance and retention in rats. It has been suggested that ginkgo increases mental precision by increasing blood flow to the brain. To determine whether ginkgo is a memory enhancer two female Sprague Dawley rats were tested for maze performance during four stages. Stages included four days of maze performance and four days of no maze performance. Subjects were tested in each stage with or without ginkgo in their water supply. It was predicted that subjects would show improved maze performance as measured by a decrease in …

Market Principles For Pesticides, Andrew P. Morriss, Roger E. Meiners Jan 2003

Market Principles For Pesticides, Andrew P. Morriss, Roger E. Meiners

Faculty Scholarship

Overall, pesticide use is growing in developing countries. United States' pesticide use changed in content, but remains substantial in volume. Critics of pesticide policy, including many of the speakers at this symposium, are concerned that pesticide problems are worsening. Surprisingly, thirty years after the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act ("FIFRA") reforms and the victory over DDT, the critics are not yet prepared to declare victory. Even worse from the perspective of environmental pressure groups is the change in attitude toward DDT, a substance whose name invokes extraordinary invective, where the current picture is not quite what the advocacy groups …

Homeless Legal Advocacy: New Challenges And Directions For The Future, L. Hafetz Jan 2003

Homeless Legal Advocacy: New Challenges And Directions For The Future, L. Hafetz

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Article examines the role of lawyers for homeless people. It argues that while even the most zealous legal advocacy cannot alone solve homelessness, it remains an important tool because of the assistance it provides to individuals, its impact on broader legal rules, and its potential role in shaping public perception and debate. The Article also maintains that legal advocacy works best when combined with a holistic approach that addresses homeless clients' non-legal needs, such as housing placement, case management, medical and psychiatric care, job training, and substance abuse counseling. It further argues that, to the extent possible, lawyers for …

Watching Out For Grandma: Video Cameras In Nursing Homes May Help To Eliminate Abuse, Tracey Kohl Jan 2003

Watching Out For Grandma: Video Cameras In Nursing Homes May Help To Eliminate Abuse, Tracey Kohl

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Comment examines the arguments for and against the proposal to grant nursing home residents and their guardians a legal right to install video cameras for protection. Part I discusses the current state of federal nursing home regulation. It focuses on the problems impeding effective enforcement of these regulations that have led to the current crisis in nursing home quality of care. Part II examines how the proposed video surveillance might affect various privacy interests within a nursing home setting. Part III addresses the economic concerns of granny cam opponents. Part IV concludes that with careful drafting, federal legislation requiring …

Agency Burrowing: Entrenching Policies And Personnel Before A New President Arrives, Nina A. Mendelson Jan 2003

Agency Burrowing: Entrenching Policies And Personnel Before A New President Arrives, Nina A. Mendelson

Articles

This Article examines executive branch agency actions concluded just before a new President takes office, such as "midnight" rulemaking and late-term hiring and promotion, which Professor Mendelson collectively refers to as "agency burrowing." Congress, the media, and some commentators have portrayed such activities as unsavory power grabs that undermine the President-elect's ability to direct the functions of administrative agencies. Rather than dismissing agency burrowing out of hand, however, Professor Mendelson argues for a more nuanced approach. In some cases, burrowing can make positive contributions to the democratic responsiveness of agencies, agency accountability, and the "rule of law." A fuller analysis …

Remarks On Food Safety In Dealing With Genetically Modified Foods, Dallas Hoover Jan 2003

Remarks On Food Safety In Dealing With Genetically Modified Foods, Dallas Hoover

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

It’s nice to be here, and I appreciate the opportunity to talk with you all. It’s my first time in a School of Law and you certainly have more wood in your rooms than we do in laboratories, so this is a different experience for me. I’m a food microbiologist by training, so to me, food safety means Salmonella and cantaloupe and viruses in cruise ships. With genetically engineered foods, it’s a little bit different because the effects aren’t as dramatic as far as safety issues as what I see in my daily professional life. Also, it’s different because genetically …

Remarks On Regulating Genetically Modified Foods In The United States, Gregory Jaffe Jan 2003

Remarks On Regulating Genetically Modified Foods In The United States, Gregory Jaffe

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Thank you very much for inviting me here today. I’m going to use PowerPoint here, but I will try to keep my comments brief. I’m going to spend just a minute or two introducing my organization to you and our biotech project. Then I’m going to talk a little about the regulatory system and what I see are some of the inadequacies in the current regulatory environment for agricultural biotechnology.

Remarks On Regulating Genetically Modified Foods In The United States, L. Val Giddings Jan 2003

Remarks On Regulating Genetically Modified Foods In The United States, L. Val Giddings

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Thank you. I’m glad to be here today. Before I launch into my prepared remarks, I do want to correct a couple of things that Greg has just told you. Just for full disclosure, Greg and I shared an office about eighteen years ago when we both worked for the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment. When I arrived in Washington, I spent five years working as an analyst on these sorts of issues. So as I’m about to pound on Greg for knowing a number of things that don’t happen to be true, please be aware that I’m not really …

Regulating Genetically Modified Foods: Is Mandatory Labeling The Right Answer?, Jonathan Adler Jan 2003

Regulating Genetically Modified Foods: Is Mandatory Labeling The Right Answer?, Jonathan Adler

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Thank you. It’s a pleasure to be here, and I appreciate the invitation. What I want to talk about are some legal issues relating to labeling and, in particular, constitutional issues relating to mandatory labeling for genetically modified foods or food products that may contain genetically modified components. This is a separate issue from whether or not the FDA, or some other agency, has sufficient statutory authority at present to mandate labeling, and that is something worth discussing. Even if they do have such authority, or even if Congress tomorrow were to give the FDA such authority or were to …

Panel Remarks On Liability: Liability For Refusing To Use Agricultural Biotechnology, Drew Kershen Jan 2003

Panel Remarks On Liability: Liability For Refusing To Use Agricultural Biotechnology, Drew Kershen

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Good afternoon. I’m very pleased to be here. I appreciate the offer and the invitation from the Richmond Journal of Law & Technology to speak at this conference. This final panel is really about liability issues related to genetically modified foods or transgenic crops. Now I just want to quickly introduce these three people, and I’m going to start on my far side with Rachel Lattimore. Rachel Lattimore is a lawyer with the firm of Arent Fox in Washington D.C., and she is going to focus her talk – and we’ve sort of agreed among ourselves so we don’t step …
