The period of maternal dependence is a time during which mammalian infants must optimise both their growth and the development of behavioural skills in order to successfully meet the demands of independent living. The rate and duration of maternal provisioning, post-weaning food availability and climatic conditions are all factors likely to influence the growth strategies of infants. While numerous studies have documented differences in growth strategies at high taxonomic levels, few have investigated those of closely related species inhabiting similar environments. A Long-Term Database For Plankton Populations And Nutrient Levels In Prairie Lakes, Lois Haertel

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

A database for prairie lake phytoplankton populations, zooplankton populations, physical variables and chemical variables is presented. Samples are taken from two time periods, 1970-1979 and 1988-1997. Six lakes, Pickerel, Enemy Swim, Cochrane, Hendricks, Oak and Bitter were sampled during both time periods. Bluedog lake was sampled only in the earlier time period and Roy, East Oakwood, Tetonkaha, Round, and South Buffalo lakes were only sampled in the later time period. Water transparency and population numbers of copepods and cladocerans declined in five of the six lakes sampled in both time periods. Chlorophyll a concentrations and Trophic State Index increased in …

This project addresses the need for English as a second language nutrition instruction for patients in a forensic mental institution. It incorporates concepts of motivation, situated learning, prison education, English for specific purposes, and content-based instruction into a model which guides the design of a nutrition curriculum, consisting of five lesson plans about the Food Guide Pyramid.

This program evaluated the effectiveness of the program interventions implemented during the 2002-2003 school year in the Riverside County Office of Education's Cal-SAFE pregnant and parenting minor program. Two researchers divided the twelve school sites, gathered data and formulated information to assess the effectiveness of the program on continuance or completion of high school after teen pregnancy.

Mothering, Crime And Incarceration, Kathleen J. Ferraro, Angela M. Moe

This article examines the relationships between mothering, crime, and incarceration through the narratives of thirty women incarcerated in a southwestern county jail. The responsibilities of child care, combined with the burdens of economic marginality and domestic violence, led some women to choose economic crimes or drug dealing as an alternative to hunger and homelessness. Other women, arrested for drug- or alcohol-related crimes, related their offenses to the psychological pain and despair resulting from loss of custody of their children. Many women were incarcerated for minor probation violations that often related to the conflict between work, child care, and probation requirements. …

Traditional cultural practices are found in every social unit, in all societies. They stem from values and beliefs intrinsic in the cultural fabric of any given society. Such beliefs lead to certain practices in the area of health that can be a detriment or a benefit to a segment of a population. Changing The Law, Changing The Culture: Rethinking The "Sleepy Resident" Problem, Jennifer F. Whetsell

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

Ms. Whetsell examines the Bell Regulations, which limit New York's hospital residents' work hours and require increased supervision from senior doctors, in light of the currently pending federal bill that seeks to do the same. The article argues that the federal government should draw lessons from the New York experience before proceeding with similar guidelines. The article notes that many roadblocks have prevented successful implementation of the New York policy, including a long-standing tradition of "hazing" first-year residents with long, unsupervised hours; medical community resistance to the notion of residents' sleep deprivation and dislike of government interference; and a general …
