Predator Odours As Reproductive Inhibitors For Norway Rats, Vera V. Voznessenskaya, Sergey V. Naidenko, Natalia Yu. Feoktistova, Georgy J. Krivomazov, Lowell A. Miller, Larry Clark Feb 2003

Predator Odours As Reproductive Inhibitors For Norway Rats, Vera V. Voznessenskaya, Sergey V. Naidenko, Natalia Yu. Feoktistova, Georgy J. Krivomazov, Lowell A. Miller, Larry Clark

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

We examined the influence of predator odor on reproductive output of Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus). Naive laboratory rats responded to predator chemical cues with reduced litter sire and skewed sex ratio. We found that exposure to predator urine had its greatest effect on implantation and maintenance of implantation when predator urine was applied to the bedding of rats during the first third of gestation. Based on the physical appearance of corpora lutea and uterine implantation scars, we found that the reduction in litter sire was due to resolution of the embryos during the early part of gestation. Subsequently, …

Estradiol Effects On The Growth Hormone/Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 Axis In Amenorrheic Athletes, Debra L. Waters, Richard I. Dorin, Clifford R. Qualls, Brent Ruby, Richard N. Baumgartner, Robert A. Robergs Feb 2003

Estradiol Effects On The Growth Hormone/Insulin-Like Growth Factor-1 Axis In Amenorrheic Athletes, Debra L. Waters, Richard I. Dorin, Clifford R. Qualls, Brent Ruby, Richard N. Baumgartner, Robert A. Robergs

Integrative Physiology and Athletic Training Faculty Publications

Disruption of the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 (GH/IGF-1) axis has been reported and studied in menopause, hypothalamic amenorrhea, and anorexia nervosa, but not in weight-stable amenorrheic athletes. We investigated the effects of short-term transdermal estradiol on basal and exercise-stimulated serum GH, IGF-1, and associated binding proteins (IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-3) in seven weight-stable female amenorrheic athletes with percentage body fats greater that 12%. Each subject received a 72h placebo patch followed by 144h of transdermal estradiol. Serum samples for GH, IGF-1, IGFBP-1, and IGFBP-3 were obtained at baseline (t1), 72hr (0), 144hr (6), and during three 90-minute trials of aerobic exercise. …

Geographic Information System Methodologies To Evaluate Relationships Between Land Use And Groundwater Quality In South Central Kentucky, Rhonda Pfaff Feb 2003

Geographic Information System Methodologies To Evaluate Relationships Between Land Use And Groundwater Quality In South Central Kentucky, Rhonda Pfaff

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The development of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology has provided techniques for a holistic approach to the study of karst groundwater contamination. While karst groundwaters supply water to a large percentage of the earth's population, its complex environments often have lacked the scientific examination and conservation measures typical of non-karst regions. In this study, GIS methodologies were explored to examine the relationships between land-use and water quality in karst watersheds. Eight watersheds throughout southern and western Kentucky were examined. The study areas included the Mammoth Cave Karst Aquifer, which is the watershed that drains the Mammoth Cave System, and seven …

Five-Member Gene Family Of Bartonella Quintana, Michael F. Minnick, Kate N. Sappington, Laura S. Smitherman, Siv G. E. Andersson, Olof Karlberg, James A. Carroll Feb 2003

Five-Member Gene Family Of Bartonella Quintana, Michael F. Minnick, Kate N. Sappington, Laura S. Smitherman, Siv G. E. Andersson, Olof Karlberg, James A. Carroll

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bartonella quintana, the agent of trench fever and an etiologic agent of bacillary angiomatosis, has an extraordinarily high hemin requirement for growth compared to other bacterial pathogens. We previously identified the major hemin receptor of the pathogen as a 30-kDa surface protein, termed HbpA. This report describes four additional homologues that share approximately 48% amino acid sequence identity with hbpA. Three of the genes form a paralagous cluster, termed hbpCAB, whereas the other members, hbpD and hbpE, are unlinked. Secondary structure predictions and other evidence suggest that Hbp family members are beta-barrels located in the outer membrane and contain eight …

Gray Whales Off Sakhalin Island, Russia: June – September 2001: A Joint U.S. – Russia Scientific Investigation, David W. Weller, Alexander M. Burdin, Amanda L. Bradford, Grigory A. Tsidulko, Yulia V. Ivashchenko, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Numerous species of marine mammals inhabit the Sea of Okhotsk. Two of the most endangered populations of large whales in the world; the Okhotsk Sea bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) and the western North Pacific (Okhotsk-Korean) gray whale are known to occur in this sea (Brownell et al., 1997; Clapham et al., 1999). Concerns regarding the status of these whale populations have been intensified by the onset of offshore oil and gas development programs in Okhotsk waters. Anthropogenic activities related to oil and gas exploration off the northeastern Sakhalin Island shelf include geophysical seismic surveying, drilling and production operations, …
