Plant Preference And Camouflage In Phasmid Morphospecies, March 2003, Jackie Prange Mar 2003

Plant Preference And Camouflage In Phasmid Morphospecies, March 2003, Jackie Prange

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Phasmids in the tropical and temperate zones are known to exhibit both polyphagous and monophagous behavior. Because more plants are better protected in the tropics, the expected number of host-plant specific insects, including Phasmids, should be higher. The diets of seven Phasmid morphospecies and a nymph group in the families Psuedophasmatidae and Phasmatidae of the Monteverde cloud forest, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, were studied. Results showed that these morphospecies consumed different amounts and different plant species (two-way ANOVA, P < 0.0001). Amount consumed increased with size as measured by tibia length. All morphospecies were polyphagous, but had differing plant preferences. Diet composition and breadth depended on morphospecies. Nymphs, however, were monophagous on Conostegia oerstediana. This study also investigated Phasmid camouflage. Phasmids of three color classes showed no significant difference in preferred resting substrate (two-way ANOVA, P < 0.0001). Phasmids most likely rely on other defense mechanisms, such as body shape and behavior, for protection.

Foraging Behavior Of Trigona Fulviventris In A Costa Rican Cloud Forest, March 2003, Tracy Noel Rogers Mar 2003

Foraging Behavior Of Trigona Fulviventris In A Costa Rican Cloud Forest, March 2003, Tracy Noel Rogers

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Two colonies of Trigona fulviventris were studied in Monteverde, Costa Rica in April- May, 2003. Foraging patterns were analyzed within the nest and between nests. Nest EBM showed no significant foraging change from morning to afternoon and no proportional foraging difference over the course of the study. On the other hand, nest DM showed significant change morning vs. afternoon as well as a clear proportional change along the duration of observations (p < 0.0001). There was also a difference in behavior between both nests (p = 0.004) which leads to the speculation that the timing of brood production of these two nests are not equal even though they are located in the same region and studied over the same time span.

Vitamin-A deficiency (VAD) is a major malnutrition problem in South Asia, where indica rice is the staple food. Indica-type rice varieties feed more than 2 billion people. Hence, we introduced a combination of transgenes using the biolistic system of transformation enabling biosynthesis of provitamin A in the endosperm of several indica rice cultivars adapted to diverse ecosystems of different countries. The rice seed-specific glutelin promoter (Gt-1 P) was used to drive the expression of phytoene synthase (psy), while lycopene β-cyclase (lcy) and phytoene desaturase (crtI), fused to the transit peptide sequence of the pea-Rubisco small subunit, were driven by the …

Biology And The Battlefield, Robert E. Armstrong, Jerry B. Warner Mar 2003

Biology And The Battlefield, Robert E. Armstrong, Jerry B. Warner

Defense Horizons

The military and the life sciences have been intertwined throughout history. Biology has often been a source of offensive weapons, ranging from the hurling of plague victims over the walls of Kaffa (which probably started the 14th-century Black Death) to the anthrax attacks of fall 2001.

The military-biology relationship also has a humane side. Over the years, medical advances have saved countless soldiers and contributed to the overall well being of society. From the smallpox inoculation of Continental Army recruits in 1777—nearly 20 years before Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccination—to the development of modern vaccines, military physicians have a lengthy and …

Blue Crab Larval Dispersion And Retention In The Mississippi Bight: Testing The Hypothesis, Harriet M. Perry, Donald R. Johnson, Kirsten M. Larsen, Christine Trigg, Fred Vukovich Mar 2003

Blue Crab Larval Dispersion And Retention In The Mississippi Bight: Testing The Hypothesis, Harriet M. Perry, Donald R. Johnson, Kirsten M. Larsen, Christine Trigg, Fred Vukovich

Faculty Publications

An hypothesis relating physical forcing to dispersion and retention of blue crab larvae was tested in the area of the Mississippi Bight. Seasonal circulation patterns derived from a 3-dimensional, primitive equation, sigma-coordinate model of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) indicate favorable conditions for offshore dispersal of larvae and their return to nearshore waters as megalopae occur between April and October. Large basin-scale events, such as Loop Current intrusions into the GOM with spin-off eddy generation and anomalies in average wind stress may interrupt this circulation pattern and change the settlement success rate. Meteorological and hydrological factors thought to influence settlement …

Pc–Based Data Acquisition For A Solid Substrate Cultivation Deep Bed Reactor, Mari S. Chinn, Sue E. Nokes, Richard S. Gates

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

This work describes an instrumentation and data acquisition system designed for a deep bed reactor used to cultivate Trichoderma longibrachiatum on wheat bran. The system allowed on–line measurements of substrate temperature, oxygen concentration within the reactor headspace, relative humidity and temperature of the inlet air, and inlet airflow rates while maintaining aseptic conditions and without disturbing the cultivation process. An error analysis for the instrumentation and data acquisition equipment was completed and provided insight into the reliability of the sensor readings. The collected data provided quantitative information about the reactor system dynamics which can be used to evaluate and apply …

Towards A Framework For Understanding Innovation Implementation In The Air Force, Howard E. Byrd Jr. Mar 2003

Towards A Framework For Understanding Innovation Implementation In The Air Force, Howard E. Byrd Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Innovation is a major way organizations deal with changes in their competitive environment. The Department of Defense (DoD) too is facing incredible changes and challenges within its competitive environments. This situation is requiring the adopting and implementing of many new innovations in an effort to transform the forces to meet the challenges. A key component of the DoD's efforts to transform is in Air Force acquisition and sustainment processes. Digital technical orders are an example of such a sustainment process. The Air Force has mandated it will transform from a paper based technical data environment to a digital one. The …

Biochemical Composition Of Embryonic Blue Crabs Callinectes Sapidus Rathbun 1896 (Crustacea : Decapoda) From The Gulf Of Mexico, Janet R. Jacobs, Patricia M. Biesiot, Harriet M. Perry, Christine Trigg

Faculty Publications

Blue crab Callinectes sapidus embryos from the Mississippi Sound were sampled in spring and in late summer to determine patterns of biochemical composition and of yolk utilization during embryogenesis and to ascertain potential seasonal differences in biochemical composition. The diameter of spring embryos was similar to 6% greater than summer embryos but this significant size difference was due to increased water content, not to increased organic content. The general trend in initial biochemical composition was similar in both seasons; protein was the primary component at similar to 50% of initial dry weight followed by lipid (similar to 30%), ash (similar …

Muddy Property: Generating And Protecting Information Privacy Norms In Bankruptcy, Edward J. Janger Mar 2003

Muddy Property: Generating And Protecting Information Privacy Norms In Bankruptcy, Edward J. Janger

William & Mary Law Review

Bankruptcy law does not deal well with website promises to protect personal information. The legal treatment of privacy policies in bankruptcy currently turns on whether such policies are viewed as creating contract rights or property rights. Neither characterization fits well, and any attempt to shoehorn information privacy into either category has significant costs. Contract obligations are subject to discharge in bankruptcy, and any consumer expectations of privacy (contractual or otherwise) are likely to be defeated. By contrast, if personal information is deemed property of the website customer, information transfers that might benefit consumers will be stifled. This Article develops an …

"Are You Beginning To See A Pattern Here?" Family And Medical Discourses Shape The Story Of Black Infant Mortality, Elaine R. Cleeton Mar 2003

"Are You Beginning To See A Pattern Here?" Family And Medical Discourses Shape The Story Of Black Infant Mortality, Elaine R. Cleeton

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Postmodern and poststructuralist theorizations of the interrelations of the particular and the universal have identified women's bodies to be the last frontier for scientific discovery leading to and satisfying the modern compulsion to stabilize and control life from birth to death. This institutional ethnography of one city's response to an elevated infant mortality rate among the babies of African American urban, impoverished women explores their discursive transformation from single mothers who cannot begin prenatal care before the second trimester because too few physicians will treat Medicaid patients, into sexually-immoral, illegaldrug- using women who deliberately harm their babies. The study locates …

A Child's Death: Lessons From Health Care Providers' Texts, Nancy M. Bell, Marie L. Campbell Mar 2003

A Child's Death: Lessons From Health Care Providers' Texts, Nancy M. Bell, Marie L. Campbell

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This article originates from a research study that explores 'what happened' to a 10-year-old child with Rett syndrome, who died from "severe malnutrition" according to a Coroners Service inquest jury. The inquest evidence analyzed, using institutional ethnography, shows that approximately one week prior to this child's death three health care providers (an emergency physician, a hospice volunteer and a home care nurse) conducted individual assessments of the child. Child protection workers were also involved. Textual analysis of the health care providers' records shows how the child was officially and textually constructed as 'dying from a terminal illness' in contrast to …
