Determining The Influence Of The Extracellular Proteinase From Brevibacterium Linens On The Metabolism Of Lactococcus Lactis Spp. Lactis Using Functional Genomics, Yi Xie May 2003

Determining The Influence Of The Extracellular Proteinase From Brevibacterium Linens On The Metabolism Of Lactococcus Lactis Spp. Lactis Using Functional Genomics, Yi Xie

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the catabolism of amino acids in cheese results in the formation of most volatile flavor compounds, a proper intracellular pool of amino acids must be established in order to produce a desirable flavor production in cheese. Generation of this pool of amino acids requires complex interactions among casein and its derivatives, proteolytic enzymes, and transport systems in the associated bacteria, including lactococci. In this project, we hypothesized that casein hydrolysis by the extracellular proteinases of Brevibacterium linens BL2 modulates the expression profile of proteolytic related genes in Lactococcus lactis spp. lactis IL1403.

In order to monitor the …

Foraging Behavior And Habitat Use Patterns Of Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos) In Relation To Human Activity And Salmon Abundance On A Coastal Alaskan Salmon Stream, Anthony P. Crupi Jr. May 2003

Foraging Behavior And Habitat Use Patterns Of Brown Bears (Ursus Arctos) In Relation To Human Activity And Salmon Abundance On A Coastal Alaskan Salmon Stream, Anthony P. Crupi Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Over the past decade, demand for recreation has increased as part of Alaska's doubling growth in tourism. Along the Chilkoot River, near Haines, fishing and bear viewing have become increasingly popular. I investigated the ecological and behavioral interactions there between brown bears, salmon, and humans between 2000 and 2002. My objectives were to: (1) determine if specific human activities differentially influenced bear activity and foraging behavior, (2) identify temporal and spatial habitat use patterns, (3) evaluate brown bear response to natural and human disturbances and quantify related flight distances, (4) investigate changes in bear foraging behaviors in response to prey …

Determining The Factors That Control Respiration And Carbon Use Efficiency In Crop Plants, Jonathan M. Frantz May 2003

Determining The Factors That Control Respiration And Carbon Use Efficiency In Crop Plants, Jonathan M. Frantz

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the literature on plant respiration, there are two viewpoints concerning the source of respiratory control: supply (photosynthate availability) or demand (temperature dependent) limitations. While different studies indicate the primary dependency for respiration is either the supply or demand side, the two paradigms cannot both be true. The relative importance of each paradigm may depend on a number of factors including period of time during which respiration is measured, phase of plant development, environmental conditions, and species.

Studies were performed using continuous CO2 gas-exchange instrumentation to monitor short- and long-term changes in whole canopies of lettuce, tomato, soybean, and …

Sampling Considerations In Human Immunodeficiency Virus And Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Needs Assessments, Ryan K. Loo May 2003

Sampling Considerations In Human Immunodeficiency Virus And Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome Needs Assessments, Ryan K. Loo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reduces the number of healthy immune cells in the human body. When the immune cells drop below a certain level, the person is diagnosed as having acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which increases the likelihood of opportunistic infections. As a result, people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH/A) have an elevated need for medical and support services. HIV/AIDS needs assessments identify unmet needs, and the results are used in the allocation of resources. Failure to accurately identify needs due to nonrepresentative samples may result in PLWH/A failing to receive needed services. Random sampling is rarely used, but convenience …

Physiological And Biochemical Aspects Of Agrobacterium-Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Interactions, David L. Parrott Jr. May 2003

Physiological And Biochemical Aspects Of Agrobacterium-Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Interactions, David L. Parrott Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Agrobacterium tumefaciens and A. rhizogenes are the causal agents of gall or hairy root disease, but normally the bacteria do not cause disease in wheat. However, both bacteria grew without inhibition when exposed to intact or wounded wheat roots or embryos, and they colonized wheat root surfaces to levels similar to dicotyledonous plants. A. tumefaciens and A. rhizogenes induced 23% cell death after a 1-h exposure to wheat embryo cells grown in 7.4 mM O2, while the extent of cell death at 2.1 mM O2 was 8%. Contact with A. tumefaciens or A. rhizogenes caused cultured wheat …

Phylogenetic Position Of Pterocommatinae And Cavariella, And Implications For The Origins Of Host Alternation In Aphids, Carol A. Rowe May 2003

Phylogenetic Position Of Pterocommatinae And Cavariella, And Implications For The Origins Of Host Alternation In Aphids, Carol A. Rowe

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Aphids are morphologically simple. Their numerous hypothesized convergent reductions, such as reduced siphunculi length in association with ant attendance, have made it difficult to define morphological synapomorphies that are necessary for phylogenetic studies. Thus, I used molecular characters both to reexamine the phylogenetic relationships of Cavariella and Pterocommatinae within Aphididae, and to further map host associations and life cycles onto these phylogenies to better understand the evolutionary lability of host alternation within Aphididae. Independent and combined analyses were performed under unweighted parsimony and maximum likelihood criteria for sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase II plus tRNA-Leucine plus partial cytochrome oxidase I …

Cape Verde’S Empresarias: Image And Reality, Jean Ludtke May 2003

Cape Verde’S Empresarias: Image And Reality, Jean Ludtke

Journal of International Women's Studies

The West African Republic of Cape Verde was under socialist governance from the time of independence in 1975 until its first multi-party government initiated privatization in 1991. The study examines, as of the mid-90s, the emergent entrepreneurial lives of a small group of young women, their views about their work, and their rejection of traditional women’s roles. This lively group has transformed their public image, used it as an organizing principle for action and modified that of the nation. In their revolt against cultural orthodoxy and assumption of new roles this group’s self- and public images have become transformational. What …

Paper Session I-A - Hands-Off Farming In Space, Hai Choi, Chan Ham, Roger Johnson

Space Congress® Proceedings

This paper focuses on the mechanization of a biomass production system (BPS) in enclosed environments for space agriculture. It requires an intelligent computer for the autonomous adjustment of controlled elements and a robotic system for measurement of plant growth and harvest. This research is to develop and integrate a BPS framework that enables autonomy, monitoring, diagnosis, fault detection and correction, and production optimization. The key feature is an integrated health monitoring and production management and control system (IHPMCS) implemented with the robotic system. IHPMCS is an integrated algorithm integrated into an embedded computer that can process biomass production data in …

Utility Of Pheasant Call Counts And Brood Counts For Monitoring Population Density And Predicting Harvest, Clifford G. Rice Apr 2003

Utility Of Pheasant Call Counts And Brood Counts For Monitoring Population Density And Predicting Harvest, Clifford G. Rice

Western North American Naturalist

Call counts and brood counts are frequently used to evaluate Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) populations and to forecast harvest. Given the variability commonly observed in these counts, I evaluated their utility in performing these functions in the state of Washington. Pheasant harvest, call counts, and brood counts have all declined in Washington State since 1982. Power for detecting trends in call counts was higher than for brood counts, but substantial sampling was required to reliably detect even large changes in the short term (e.g., power = 0.9 for a 40% decline between 2 years with 12 routes). Brood …

Horned Lark (Eremophila Alpestris L.) Predation On Alkali Bees, Nomia Melanderi Cockerell, Richard W. Rust Apr 2003

Horned Lark (Eremophila Alpestris L.) Predation On Alkali Bees, Nomia Melanderi Cockerell, Richard W. Rust

Western North American Naturalist

Horned Larks (Eremophila alpestris L.), sampled during the first 2 weeks of alkali bee (Nomia melanderi Cockerell) emergence at bee nesting sites in 2 alfalfa seed-growing regions in central Nevada, ate significantly more male than female alkali bees. Exploitation rates suggest that individual Horned Larks consume 10 to 200 alkali bees per day and feed an additional 300 to 1000 bees per day to nestlings nestlings.

Effects Of Grass Bug Feeding And Drought Stress On Selected Lines Of Crested Wheatgrass, Robert S. Nowak, James D. Hansen, Cheryl L. Nowak Apr 2003

Effects Of Grass Bug Feeding And Drought Stress On Selected Lines Of Crested Wheatgrass, Robert S. Nowak, James D. Hansen, Cheryl L. Nowak

Western North American Naturalist

The sequential effects of feeding by grass bugs (Irbisia pacifica [Hemiptera: Miridae]) and of drought stress on the growth of 2 crested wheatgrasses (the hybrid Agropyron cristatum × desertorum and A. cristatum cv. 'Fairway') were investigated in a controlled greenhouse experiment. Growth rates of genotypes that were previously selected for resistance to grass bug feeding were not consistently greater than those of unselected genotypes when plants were exposed to bug feeding. Thus, the mechanism of resistance to bug feeding for the selected genotypes does not appear to be "tolerance," i.e., rapid growth rates that allow the resistant genotypes to …

A Strange Type Of Pica, Marwan M. Al-Sharbati, Ziad Aj Zaidan, Ala’Adin Al-Khalili, Khalid Apr 2003

A Strange Type Of Pica, Marwan M. Al-Sharbati, Ziad Aj Zaidan, Ala’Adin Al-Khalili, Khalid

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Pica, where the patient eats non-food items such as mud, clay, varnish etc., is a common behavioural problem seen in children, pregnant women and the mentally retarded. However sponge pica is a very rare variation. We report a case of a 5-year-old Omani girl, who presented with sponge pica since the age of two years, with recent abdominal pain. Investigations showed anaemia, elevated liver enzymes and normal intelligence. There was no evidence of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Both clinical and laboratory findings showed complete recovery after a few weeks of oral iron therapy. Her appetite improved, and she started to gain weight. …

The Development Of A Measure Of Men's Objectification Of Women, Liza Zolot '03 Apr 2003

The Development Of A Measure Of Men's Objectification Of Women, Liza Zolot '03

Honors Projects

Objectification is any action that separates a woman's body, body parts, or sexual functions from her person, or regards her as if her body were capable of representing her. This study aimed to develop a measure of men's objectifying attitudes and behaviors towards women. Based on research in areas of sexual harassment and self-objectification, items for this measure were developed across six categories: exclusion of face and emphasis on body, independence from attraction, disempathy/ disrespect, anonymity, surveillance, and social behaviors. Sixty items were created across these categories, and the measure was distributed to 93 Illinois Wesleyan University male students. Internal …
