“Predictive Optimal Control Of Active And Passive Building Thermal Storage Inventory”, Gregor P. Henze, Moncef Krarti Jan 2003

“Predictive Optimal Control Of Active And Passive Building Thermal Storage Inventory”, Gregor P. Henze, Moncef Krarti

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications

Cooling of commercial buildings contributes significantly to the peak demand placed on an electrical utility grid. Time-of-use electricity rates encourage shifting of electrical loads to off-peak periods at night and weekends. Buildings can respond to these pricing signals by shifting cooling-related thermal loads either by precooling the building’s massive structure or the use of active thermal energy storage systems such as ice storage. While these two thermal batteries have been engaged separately in the past, this project investigates the merits of harnessing both storage media concurrently in the context of predictive optimal control.
The analysis, modeling, and simulation research presented …

Human Health Impacts Of Forest Fires In The Southern United States: A Literature Review, Cynthia T. Fowler Jan 2003

Human Health Impacts Of Forest Fires In The Southern United States: A Literature Review, Cynthia T. Fowler

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

Forestry management practices can shape patterns of health, illness, and disease. A primary goal for owners of federal, state, and private forests is to craft ecosystem management plans that simultaneously optimize forest health and human health. Firea major forest management issue in the United Statescomplicates these goals. Wildfires are natural phenomena with unpredictable effects. Controlled fires, on the other hand, are often prescribed to reduce biomass fuels, reduce wildfire risks, and protect resource values. While fires can enhance the health of fire-adapted ecosystems, research on the human health impacts of smoke from forest fires is somewhat equivocal. This article synthesizes …

Human Utilization Of Subsurface Extraterrestrial Environments: Final Report, Penelope J. Boston, R. D. Frederick, Val Hildreth-Werker

KIP Data Sets and Technical Reports

Caves have been used in the ancient past as shelter or habitat by many organisms (including humans). Since antiquity, humans have explored caves for the minerals they contain and sometimes for ceremonial purposes. Over the past century, caves have become the target of increasing exploration, scientific research, and recreation. The use of caves on extraterrestrial bodies for human habitation has been suggested by several investigators. Lunar lava tube bases received early attention because lava tubes were clearly visible in lunar images from the Apollo Era. More recently, Mars Observer Camera data has shown us clear evidence of large tubes visible …

Family Preservation Conference Participants And The Internet: Opinions About On-Line Continuing Education, Timothy Barnett-Queen

Journal of Family Strengths

Development of distance and distributed learning continuing education (CE) opportunities for human services workers requires existence of such CE offerings, participant access to the Internet, knowledge of the Internet's use, and willingness to enroll in such programs. A survey of human services professionals who attended the Family Preservation Annual Conferences in 2000 (N = 230) and 2002 (N - 197) revealed that 92% (n = 206) of 2000 survey participants and 98% (192) of 2002 survey participants have used the Internet, while 76% of 2000 and 56% of 2002 respondents reported no formal training in the use of the Internet …

The Structure Of Communication As A Challenge For Theology, Paul A. Soukup Jan 2003

The Structure Of Communication As A Challenge For Theology, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Even more than any content of communication, its structures influence theology by forming the framework for thinking about and sharing reflections on religious experience. This essay examines three characteristic, but often overlooked, communication structures: oral vs. written and printed communication and the contemporary move to "secondary oral" styles; communication technology's sense of place; and the uses of visual space as guides to the interpretation of experience. Since each of these structures shapes theology, a more conscious awareness of them challenges theology to take the role of communication more seriously.

Yrg Care Base Model Report: Integrated Prevention, Care, And Support Services, Christopher Castle

HIV and AIDS

In September 1999, YRG CARE embarked on a research project in collaboration with the Horizons Program and the International HIV/AIDS Alliance entitled “Scaling Up Affordable and Appropriate Care and Support Services for People Living with HIV/AIDS in South India.” The study aims to better understand the affordability and appropriateness of an integrated care and support model in an emerging epidemic situation to meet the needs of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) and improve their quality of life. A second aim is to examine the process and costs of scaling up this model. A critical step toward achieving both goals is …

On The Rare Endemic Hydrophyllum Brownei Kral & Bates (Browne's Waterleaf): New Population Information And A Recommendation For Change In Status, Travis D. Marsico Jan 2003

On The Rare Endemic Hydrophyllum Brownei Kral & Bates (Browne's Waterleaf): New Population Information And A Recommendation For Change In Status, Travis D. Marsico

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Hydrophyllum brownei Krai & Bates (Browne's waterleaf), newly described in 1991, is endemic to the Ouachita Mountain Natural Division of Arkansas. For the purpose of better understanding population parameters within which H. brownei grows, ranges of shade values, population extents, and population distance relationships to streams were measured. Hydrophyllum brownei grows in extremely high shade, in populations of widely varying sizes, and always in association with a stream system. In order to list species associated with H. brownei, vouchers of species assemblages were collected at the H. brownei sites visited. The species is designated as critically imperiled globally because of …

Norms And Interests, Geoffrey P. Miller Jan 2003

Norms And Interests, Geoffrey P. Miller

Faculty Articles

There is thus a wide degree of debate in the literature about the degree to which social norms reflect spontaneous private ordering. Despite the disagreement, however, the literature to date has not recognized a key feature of many social norms: Social norms can-and often do-function as means by which members of interest groups acquire benefits for their members. This concept requires elaboration, and will be discussed at length in the pages that follow. The basic intuition is simple, however: by manipulating social norms, groups can enrich themselves-either monetarily or by obtaining non-pecuniary benefits such as esteem or deference-at the expense …

Foreword: "Just Do It!" Title Ix As A Threat To University Autonomy, Richard A. Epstein Jan 2003

Foreword: "Just Do It!" Title Ix As A Threat To University Autonomy, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

For a short time I was stymied to identify a suitable theme for the Foreword to the 2003 Survey of Books in the Michigan Law Review. The task is surely a daunting one, because it is never possible to write a Foreword that offers the reader a Cook's Tour of the many distinguished offerings reviewed in its pages. Therefore I hope to link one broad theme to one narrow topic, knowing that at first it may look as though they have little in common. In taking this approach, I prefer dangerous shoals to well-marked channels. I shall therefore begin with …
