Literature indicate many organizational factors influence IS performance. However, the effects of these factors may be different for organizational factors influence IS performance. However, the effects of these factors may be different for organizations with distinctive information management (IM) strategies. This paper applies the methodology developed by Sabherwal and Chan (2001) to identify IM strategic profiles based on Miles and Snow (1978) typology and examines the impact of a set of organizational variables on IS performance in each IM strategic profile type. Managerial implications of the findings are also discussed.

Pursuing Lean Objective-Oriented Software Development, Jack Cook
Presentations and other scholarship
Software quality can be characterized as meeting customer requirements at the agreed cost within the established time frame. Currently, the sad state of software quality indicates new software development approaches might be warranted. One of the most dramatic examples of software project failures is the London Stock Exchange (called Taurus) developed eleven years late and 13,200% over budget. According to the Standish Group, known for its high quality, independent primary research, analysis, and advice, only 16% of software development projects are successful whereas 31% are canceled due to defects. Average cost for "failed" projects is 189% of the original estimate, …

The internet spins a vast web of information across the globe. Data and information flow freely - available to anyone for learning, understanding, and analysis. Organizations can cooperate across departments, regions, and countries. Sounds wonderful - what is the problem? The problem is as old as mainframe versus PC and Windows versus McIntosh. Data moves freely but is it standardized? Can it be understood by all systems, analyzed easily, translated across different languages, and human readable, among other things? The internet permits movement of data across various networks; however, data are not standardized. Data streams have no universal meanings, specialized …

While technology can be used as an important competitive tool for organizational survival and growth, many graduate business programs have been unclear in their delineation of which topics should be included within their core IT/IS MBA course. A total of 311 1st year, 2nd year, executive MBA student and faculty were surveyed as to which technology topics they believed were most important in an IT/IS core. MBA course "Strategic use of MIS", Management's Information Needs" and "E-Business" were rated as the top three most important topics that should be included in the core IT/IS course. Conversely "Artificial Intelligence", "MIS Hardware", …

The Wearable Eyetracker: A Tool For The Study Of High-Level Visual Tasks, Jason Babcock, Jeff Pelz, Joseph Peak
Presentations and other scholarship
Even as the sophistication and power of computer-based vision systems is growing, the human visual system remains unsurpassed in many visual tasks. Vision delivers a rich representation of the environment without conscious effort, but the perception of a high resolution, wide field-of-view scene is largely an illusion made possible by the concentration of visual acuity near the center of gaze, coupled with a large, low-acuity periphery. Human observers are typically unaware of this extreme anisotropy because the visual system is equipped with a sophisticated oculomotor system that rapidly moves the eyes to sample the retinal image several times every second. …
Image Appearance Modeling, Mark Fairchild, Garrett Johnson
Image Appearance Modeling, Mark Fairchild, Garrett Johnson
Presentations and other scholarship
Traditional color appearance modeling has recently matured to the point that available, internationally-recommended models such as CIECAM02 are capable of making a wide range of predictions to within the observer variability in color matching and color scaling of stimuli in somewhat simplified viewing conditions. It is proposed that the next significant advances in the field of color appearance modeling will not come from evolutionary revisions of these models. Instead, a more revolutionary approach will be required to make appearance predictions for more complex stimuli in a wider array of viewing conditions. Such an approach can be considered image appearance modeling …

We present a technique for converting continuous gray-scale images to halftone (black and white) images that lend themselves to lossless data compression with compression factor of three or better. Our method involves using novel halftone mask structures which consist of non-repeated threshold values. We have versions of both dispersed-dot and clustered-dot masks, which produce acceptable images for a variety of printers. Using the masks as a sort key allows us to reversibly rearrange the image pixels and partition them into groups with a highly skewed distribution allowing Huffman compression coding techniques to be applied. This gives compression ratios in the …

Students And Service Staff Learning And Researching Together On A College Campus, Diane Downer Anderson
Educational Studies Faculty Works
Describes the preliminary study of a service learning program at Swarthmore College that paired students and college service staff in learning partnerships and as researchers of the program. Three primary questions were answered: How does service within a college campus count as service learning? How was the program community-shaping as well as personally enriching for students and staff? What place does participatory research have in service learning projects?

The past two decades have been a period of rapid evolution in the science of biotechnology and therefore in patent strategies, if not in patent law itself. Patent law takes a long time to catch up with science, and commentators take a long time to catch up with the law, but patent lawyers don’t have that luxury. They have to keep ahead of the game, figuring out claiming strategies that allow their clients to capture the value of future discoveries. I want to discuss some of these strategies today.

Embryonic Stem Cell Research Controversy: Focus On The Private Sector And International Sphere, Sylvia Kim
Embryonic Stem Cell Research Controversy: Focus On The Private Sector And International Sphere, Sylvia Kim
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
Despite its tremendous potential for curing various maladies, embryonic stem cell research has not received full funding support from the federal government due-to intense ethical debate surrounding the status of embryos. While the United States has been busy grappling with ethical issues, the private sector and the rest of the world have been making significant progress without stringent government oversight. This Note demonstrates the likely consequences of current federal and state regulations in the U.S. regarding stem cell research and the need for adequate safeguards. Because withholding government funds from stem cell research does not eliminate moral and ethical objections, …

The Region And The Smaller Enterprise: A Discussion Of Appropriate Investigative Methodologies, Ian Pownall
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship
Regional policy instruments are typically driven by economic rationales, from either a firm or industrial perspective. Yet too often, these rationales are taken as ex ante to the contexts within which firms and industries compete. Recent regional development research has urged a better link be developed between the individual, the firm, and their context, so as to understand the role of regions in supporting effective competitiveness of organizations. In this article, recent research themes are explored that may shed light on the nature of this relationship and that can be developed into an investigative methodology that could aid policy practitioners …

[Review Of] Jun Xing And Lane Ryo Hirabayashi, Eds. Reversing The Lens: Ethnicity, Race, Gender, And Sexuality Through Film, Susan Crutchfield
Ethnic Studies Review
The fourteen essays collected in Xing and Hirabayashi's new volume make a strong argument for serious intellectual work involved not only in the college-level study of moving images for their messages about minority groups but also in pedagogical approaches that take film and video as their primary texts. Written by a collection of scholars who work in ethnic and racial studies and various allied fields, the essays share a concern with pedagogy and with showing "how visual media can be used to facilitate cross-cultural understanding and communications, particularly with respect to the thorny topics of ethnicity and race" (3). Indeed, …

Building Rome In A Day: What Should We Expect From The Riaa?, Valerie Alter
Building Rome In A Day: What Should We Expect From The Riaa?, Valerie Alter
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
When a new technology enters the entertainment market, incumbents may look backwards rather than forwards. Today, peer-to-peer file sharing services enable users to get the weekly chart-toppers for free by downloading desired songs, depriving the record companies of their rightful royalties. The record companies fear that this free online peer-topeer systems will mean the end of the recording industry. In response, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has begun to prosecute individual users, including a 12-year-old girl. However, this approach is problematic, and there are two other potential solutions that may be preferable. First, the recording industry could abandon …
