Profile Of Women Trustees At Land Grant Institutions: Roles, Responsibilities, And Reflections, Darla J. Twale, Joanne E. Burley

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

A study of 49 women trustees at land grant universities showed that they were well educated and highly involved in civic and professional affairs. As trustees, they were heavily involved in the life of the campus and were making substantial sacrifices to do so. The data indicated women were being selected for subcommittees but not necessarily the most powerful ones. While some women accepted the position to represent the female perspective, their comments urged women to be cautious if they want to be an effective voice.

An Operational Measure Of Physician Lifelong Learning: Its Development, Components And Preliminary Psychometric Data, Mohammadreza Hojat, Thomas J. Nasca, James B. Erdmann, Anthony J. Frisby, Jon J. Veloski, Joseph S. Gonnella

Academic Commons and Scott Memorial Library Staff Papers and Presentations

Despite the emphasis placed on physicians’ lifelong learning, no psychometrically sound instrument has been developed to provide an operational measure of the concept and its components among physicians. The authors designed this study to develop a tool for measuring physician lifelong learning, to identify its underlying components and to assess its psychometric properties. A 37-item questionnaire was developed, based on a review of literature and the results of two pilot studies. Psychometric analyses of the responses of 160 physicians identified 19 items that were included in the Jefferson Scale of Physician Lifelong Learning. Factor analysis of the 19 items showed …

Farnesol Biosynthesis In Candida Albicans: Cellular Response To Sterol Inhibition By Zaragozic Acid B, Jacob M. Hornby, Bessie W. Kebaara, Kenneth W. Nickerson Jul 2003

Farnesol Biosynthesis In Candida Albicans: Cellular Response To Sterol Inhibition By Zaragozic Acid B, Jacob M. Hornby, Bessie W. Kebaara, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Papers in Microbiology

The dimorphic fungus Candida albicans produces farnesol as a quorum-sensing molecule that regulates cellular morphology. The biosynthetic origin of farnesol has been resolved by treating these cells with zaragozic acid B, a potent inhibitor of squalene synthase in the sterol biosynthetic pathway. Treatment with zaragozic acid B leads to an eightfold increase in the amount of farnesol produced by C. albicans. Furthermore, C. albicans cell extracts contain enzymatic activity to convert [3H]farnesyl pyrophosphate to [3H]farnesol. Many common antifungal antibiotics (e.g., zaragozic acids, azoles, and allylamines) target steps in sterol biosynthesis. We suggest that the fungicidal …

Use Of Neutral Fact-Finding To Preserve Exclusive Rights And Uphold The Disclosure Purpose Of The Patent System, Brian Panka

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This comment proposes the use of neutral fact-finding as a precursor to litigation of patent disputes. Section II begins with a brief introduction to the concept of patents and the system used in the United States for granting and protecting exclusive rights associated with patent grants. Then, Section III discusses traditional ADR processes available to resolve patent disputes and sets forth reasons those processes are not widely used. Finally, Section IV offers neutral factfinding as a solution to both litigation and traditional ADR process concerns with respect to resolving patent disputes

North Country Stories: Written And Oral Texts Of A Family History, Susan E. Gray Jul 2003

North Country Stories: Written And Oral Texts Of A Family History, Susan E. Gray

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Because the diaries that brought me to Camp Edit were those of a husband and a wife, I understood from the beginning the essential multi-vocality of my project. But I had no idea that what I then ,envisioned as a dialogue for me to orchestrate between the Reverend George Nelson Smith and his wife, Arvilla Powers Smith, would become a lively, sometimes heated, multi-generational family conversation where we are a privileged audience. Nor could I have known that the written texts of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries would be joined by other records, including oral ones from the present. …

Title Ix: Boom Or Bust?, Marilyn J. Mather Jul 2003

Title Ix: Boom Or Bust?, Marilyn J. Mather

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Athletics has been significantly impacted by Title IX through an increase the number of female athletes, the number of teams available, and indirectly, the development of women's professional leagues. However, women in leadership positions in athletics have declined significantly since Title IX was signed into law. A concern about the discontinuation of some men's non-revenue producing sports influenced the Department of Education to form the Commission on Opportunities in Athletics to review Title IX. The process and findings of the Commission are discussed, as well as the possible impact of the Commission's recommendations.

Exit Routes From Welfare: Examining Barriers To Employment, Demographic And Human Capital Factors, Colleen Heflin Jul 2003

Exit Routes From Welfare: Examining Barriers To Employment, Demographic And Human Capital Factors, Colleen Heflin

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This paper investigates how barriers to employment, human capital, and demographic characteristics affect women’s exit routes off welfare. Specifically, I address two questions. First, what are the avenues through which women leave welfare? Second, are mental and physical health problems, domestic violence, and lack of access to transportation, characteristics that have been ignored in other studies of welfare dynamics, associated with different welfare exit routes? Using multinomial logistic regression and data from the Women’s Employment Survey, this project examines the specific exit route chosen in detail and goes beyond general dynamics associated with welfare exit in order to capture the …

Radio And The Americanization Of German Culture In The 1960s And 1970s, Gerd Horten Jul 2003

Radio And The Americanization Of German Culture In The 1960s And 1970s, Gerd Horten

CUP Faculty Research

The purpose of this paper is to situate the development of German radio—more specifically West German radio here—in the context of the social and cultural changes in the Federal Republic in the 1960s and 1970s. The major themes and contexts which I will focus on are 1) the development of radio in West Germany in the postwar period; 2) the cultural changes of the late 1950s and early 1960s, when the mass media and consumer culture converged in very dynamic ways to radically alter the daily habits of West German society and 3) the influence of American pop culture in …

Criminal Law Sanctuaries, Wayne A. Logan Jul 2003

Criminal Law Sanctuaries, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

The paper explores the existence of various social institutions that have resisted the reach of criminal law enforcement authority over time. Focusing on the response of the Catholic Church to widespread clergy sexual abuse, which in many respects reflects the practice of sanctuary in the European middle ages, as well as the historic resistance of families and corporations to criminal law authority, the paper discusses the reasons underlying the phenomenon of sanctuaries, and offers insights into how criminal wrongdoing might best be addressed therein.

Fabrication Of Cell Culture Scaffolds Using Micro/Nanotechnologies To Study The Attachment And Alignment Of Smooth Muscle Cells, Mengyan Li Jul 2003

Fabrication Of Cell Culture Scaffolds Using Micro/Nanotechnologies To Study The Attachment And Alignment Of Smooth Muscle Cells, Mengyan Li

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation elaborates the design and fabrication of in vitro cell culture scaffolds using microfabrication and electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly (LbL) technologies, and develops the so-called layer-by-layer lift-off (LbL-LO) technique to control surface topography, surface properties, and underlying architectures of the scaffolds. Smooth muscle cells were cultured on the fabricated scaffolds with gelatin, fibronectin, and polyelectrolytes (PSS, PDDA, PAH, and PEI) as surface materials, multilayer polyelectrolytes as architectures, deposited in strip- and square-patterns. It was found that the exposed surface materials, which have different charge, hydrophobicity, and chemical structure (e.g., amino acid sequence), affect the adhesion of smooth muscle cells. Cells …

Adiponectin Expression From Human Adipose Tissue: Relation To Obesity, Insulin Resistance, And Tumor Necrosis Factor-Α Expression, Philip A. Kern, Gina B. Di Gregorio, Tong Lu, Negah Rassouli, Gouri Ranganathan

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

Adiponectin is a 29-kDa adipocyte protein that has been linked to the insulin resistance of obesity and lipodystrophy. To better understand the regulation of adiponectin expression, we measured plasma adiponectin and adipose tissue adiponectin mRNA levels in nondiabetic subjects with varying degrees of obesity and insulin resistance. Plasma adiponectin and adiponectin mRNA levels were highly correlated with each other (r = 0.80, P < 0.001), and obese subjects expressed significantly lower levels of adiponectin. However, a significant sex difference in adiponectin expression was observed, especially in relatively lean subjects. When men and women with a BMI2were compared, women had a twofold higher percent body fat, yet their plasma adiponectin levels were 65% higher (8.6 ± 1.1 and 14.2 ± 1.6 μg/ml in men and women, respectively; P < 0.02). Plasma adiponectin had a strong association with insulin sensitivity index (SI) (r = 0.67, P < 0.0001, n = 51) that was not affected by sex, but no relation with insulin secretion. To separate the effects of obesity (BMI) from SI, subjects who were discordant for SI were matched for BMI, age, and sex. Using this approach, insulin-sensitive subjects demonstrated a twofold higher plasma level of …
