Short Pulse Laser Propagation Through Tissues, Champak Das, Ashish Trivedi, Kunal Mitra, Tuan Vo-Dinh

An experimental and numerical study is performed to analyze short pulse laser propagation through tissue phantoms without and with inhomogeneities/tumors imbedded in it. Short pulse laser probing techniques has distinct advantages over conventional very large pulse width or cw lasers primarily due to the additional information conveyed about the tissue interior by the temporal variation of the observed signal. Both the scattered temporal transmitted and reflected optical signals are measured experimentally using a streak camera for samples irradiated with a short pulse laser source. Functional And Comparative Genomic Analyses Of An Operon Involved In Fructooligosaccharide Utilization By Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Rodolphe Barrangou, Eric Altermann, Robert W. Hutkins, Raul Cano, Todd Klaenhammer

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a probiotic organism that displays the ability to use prebiotic compounds such as fructooligosaccharides (FOS), which stimulate the growth of beneficial commensals in the gastrointestinal tract. However, little is known about the mechanisms and genes involved in FOS utilization by Lactobacillus species. Analysis of the L. acidophilus NCFM genome revealed an msm locus composed of a transcriptional regulator of the LacI family, a four-component ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transport system, a fructosidase, and a sucrose phosphorylase. Transcriptional analysis of this operon demonstrated that gene expression was induced by sucrose and FOS but not by glucose or fructose, suggesting …

En su estudio sobre José Victorino Lastarria, quien junto a Bello y Sarmiento desempeñó un papel fundamental en la vida intelectual del Chile decimonónico, Bernardo Subercaseaux afirma que su famoso Discurso del 3 de mayo de 1842, entre otras cosas, institucionaliza la literatura chilena (Cultura 62). Oscar L. Vera, por su parte, al reflexionar sobre la misma en 1933 concluye que ésta sigue siendo "una literatura en formación" (289), mientras que Lautaro Yankas marca el año 1938 como el momento en que recién empieza a tomar forma la literatura chilena (111).
