Holy Fools, Secular Saints, And Illiterate Saviors In American Literature And Popular Culture, Dana Heller Sep 2003

Holy Fools, Secular Saints, And Illiterate Saviors In American Literature And Popular Culture, Dana Heller

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article, "Holy Fools, Secular Saints, and Illiterate Saviors in American Literature and Popular Culture," Dana Heller identifies and analyzes characteristics of the holy fool figure in American literature and culture. Heller defines the holy fool, or divine idiot, as a figure central to U.S. myths of nation. One encounters such figures in American literature as well as in American folklore, popular culture, and mass media. In American culture, the Divine Idiot is a hybrid form which grows out of the crossings of numerous literary and historical currents, both secular and non-secular. This unwieldy hybridity -- the fact that …

Symbolism, Popular Drama, And Politics And Art In Belgium, 1886-1910, Joan Gross

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Symbolism, Popular Drama, and Politics and Arts in Belgium, 1886-1910," Joan Gross examines what effects the reign of terror in the Congo and the silence that masked it might have had on popular performance traditions and literary practices in Belgium. Gross examines a popular puppet play by Léopold Leloup and an essay by Maurice Maeterlinck, both of which are called The Massacre of the Innocents. The third text she explores is a parliamentary speech given by Émile Vandervelde in 1903 in which he protested brutal practices in the Congo. Gross explores the interconnections between these three disparate …

Employer Tros Are All The Rage: A New Approach To Workplace Violence, Kyle Riley Sep 2003

Employer Tros Are All The Rage: A New Approach To Workplace Violence, Kyle Riley

Nevada Law Journal

This Article examines the emerging phenomenon of the Employer TRO - a remedy that allows employers to obtain TROs in response to the threat of workplace violence. The author argues that the employer TRO arms employers with new substantive rights, increases the protection of employees, and reduces the employer's liability for incidents of workplace violence. A comprehensive examination of the current responses to workplace violence indicates that employers and employees lack a response to the imminent workplace assault.

The Role Of The United States Military Lawyer In Projecting A Vision Of The Laws Of War, Kenneth Anderson Sep 2003

The Role Of The United States Military Lawyer In Projecting A Vision Of The Laws Of War, Kenneth Anderson

Chicago Journal of International Law

Over the years dealing professionally with US military lawyers on matters of the laws of war, I have often been struck by the following disjunction. On the one hand, the public attitude of career US military lawyers who deal with matters of the laws of war has typically been unapologetically lawyerly. By that, I mean an attitude which is strongly professional, in the sense of representing a client who happens to be the US government, deploying a body of technical law in a technical and narrowly legal way. Consistent with this markedly lawyerly attitude, the US military lawyer's legal language …

India's Wto Challenge To Drug Enforcement Conditions In The European Community Generalized System Of Preferences: A Little Known Case With Major Repercussions For "Political" Conditionality In Us Trade Policy, Robert Howse

Chicago Journal of International Law

The use of trade sanctions for broad foreign policy purposes has been a matter of longstanding controversy in the United States. Apart from questioning the effectiveness of such sanctions, and pointing out that they may have innocent victims (such as workers in oppressive regimes whose jobs are dependent on export opportunities), free traders often claim that sanctions violate the rules of the World Trade Organization ("WTO"). In fact, the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade ("GATT"), the centerpiece of the WTO as far as trade in goods is concerned, does not put free trade above other political values and contains …

It Ain't No Tv Show: Jags And Modern Military Operations, Charles J. Dunlap Jr.

Chicago Journal of International Law

Does art imitate life or does life imitate art? The popular television series JAG follows the life of several fictional Navy lawyers; the most interesting character is Harm, a former fighter pilot turned military lawyer, or Judge Advocate General ("JAG"). Do the complex and dramatic story lines that find Harm and the other military lawyers at the center of every flashpoint around the world reflect the life of the "normal" JAG? Indeed, JAGs from any service are often asked, "Do you get to fly jets like Harm?" The answer is no, but today's JAGs do get involved in every aspect …

View From The Legal Frontlines, M. Scott Holcomb Sep 2003

View From The Legal Frontlines, M. Scott Holcomb

Chicago Journal of International Law

Cicero said, "silent enim leges inter arma," which means in times of war the law falls silent. A judge advocate's primary mission is to prevent this from occurring. To accomplish this objective, the judge advocate performs a variety of functions including participating in the development of the operational plan, drafting rules of engagement ("ROE"), and reviewing target nominations. Inevitably, the operational law attorney faces unique and challenging legal issues that surface during conflict and require immediate resolution. Furthermore, the judge advocate often must provide legal guidance to soldiers on the ground while strategic policy decisions are being debated and finalized. …

Special Forces' Wear Of Non-Standard Uniforms, W. Hays Parks Sep 2003

Special Forces' Wear Of Non-Standard Uniforms, W. Hays Parks

Chicago Journal of International Law

In February 2002, newspapers in the United States and United Kingdom published complaints by some nongovernmental organizations ("NGOs") about US and other Coalition special operations forces operating in Afghanistan in "civilian clothing." The reports sparked debate within the NGO community and among military judge advocates about the legality of such actions. At the US Special Operations Command ("USSOCOM") annual Legal Conference, May 13-17, 2002, the judge advocate debate became intense. While some attendees raised questions of "illegality" and the right or obligation of special operations forces to refuse an "illegal order" to wear "civilian clothing," others urged caution. The discussion …

Strategic Leadership Competencies, Leonard Wong Dr., Stephen J. Gerras Dr., William Kidd Col, Robert Pricone Col

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The strategic leadership literature in both the academic and military contexts is replete with long lists of the knowledge, skills, and abilities. Unfortunately, long comprehensive lists are problematic. Looking across the literature on strategic leadership, current Army strategic leader competencies, and the future environment, six meta-competencies can be derived: identity, mental agility, cross-cultural savvy, interpersonal maturity, world-class warrior, and professional astuteness.

Low Carbohydrate Diet. Its Effects On Selected Body Parameters Of Obese Patients, Faisal A. Alnasir, Bahaa E. Fateha Sep 2003

Low Carbohydrate Diet. Its Effects On Selected Body Parameters Of Obese Patients, Faisal A. Alnasir, Bahaa E. Fateha

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: This pilot study, which involved 13 obese patients, was conducted to determine the effect of a low carbohydrate diet on the body weight and other body parameters, including blood pressure and selected biochemistry indicators. METHODS: The study was carried out in Naim Health Center, Bahrain during the period March 2002 to April 2002. Each individual was followed for 6 weeks while on a low carbohydrate diet, with careful monitoring during the study period. RESULTS: Paired t-test showed statistically significant reduction of waist circumference (p<0.00) and body weight (p<0.00) of the sample population after 6 weeks from the commencement of the diet. The body mass index also showed statistically significant reduction during the study period (p<0.01). Furthermore, blood cholesterol level was reduced (p<0.012). Although there was a statistically significant decrease in the fasting blood sugar levels (p<0.01), the mean readings remained within the normal range of blood sugar levels. There were no statistically significant changes in the levels of urate, creatinine, urea, triglyceride, and in systolic or diastolic blood pressure readings (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Low carbohydrate diet could help in reducing body weight without any significant harmful …

Awareness During Surgery, Farouk M. Messahel, Ali S. Al-Qahtani Sep 2003

Awareness During Surgery, Farouk M. Messahel, Ali S. Al-Qahtani

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Patients who experience awareness under surgery may suffer from the post-traumatic stress disorder with its long-lasting psychological damage. Furthermore, there are also media attention and legal consequences. In spite of understanding its causes, it is still occurring worldwide and there are no reports of awareness in the Saudi medical literature. This prospective study was conducted to determine the incidence of awareness when its causes are eliminated and to record patient satisfaction. METHODS: Surgical patients >4 years old (ASA I-III) admitted to the Armed Forces Hospital, Wadi Al-Dawasir, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, between October 1998 and November 2002 were included …

The Impact Of Cultural Values On Email Acceptance : Evidence From The Prc, Linjun Huang Sep 2003

The Impact Of Cultural Values On Email Acceptance : Evidence From The Prc, Linjun Huang

Lingnan Theses

Global deployment in information technology (IT) requires understandings of the cultural constraints in technology acceptance and usage behavior. Prior research indicates that the salient technology acceptance models may not be applicable to all cultures since empirical support was mainly obtained from North America. Cultural impact on user acceptance is still at the early stage of research. There has been little research done on technology acceptance and usage behavior in the context of China, which exhibits distinctive cultural differences from countries in North America. The purpose of this thesis is to test the cross-cultural applicability of Technology Acceptance Model in the …

Sart Influences Sars Expression In Staphylococcus Aureus, Katherine A. Schmidt, Adhar C. Manna, Ambrose L. Cheung Sep 2003

Sart Influences Sars Expression In Staphylococcus Aureus, Katherine A. Schmidt, Adhar C. Manna, Ambrose L. Cheung

Dartmouth Scholarship

Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive pathogen that is capable of expressing a variety of virulence proteins in response to environmental signals. Virulence protein expression in S. aureus is controlled by a network of regulatory loci including sarA and agr. The sarA/agr network is associated with the expression of cell wall-associated adhesins during exponential growth and the expression of secreted enzymes and toxins in the transition to post-exponential growth. A number of sarA homologs, including sarT and sarS, have been identified in the S. aureus genome. Previous studies have shown that sarA influences expression of both sarT and sarS in the …
