On The Macroeconomic Effects Of Establishing Tradability In Weak Property Rights, Gunnar Eliasson, Clas Wihlborg Jan 2003

On The Macroeconomic Effects Of Establishing Tradability In Weak Property Rights, Gunnar Eliasson, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

The New Economy is closely associated with computing & communications technology, notably the Internet. We discuss property rights to, and trade in, the difficult-to-define intangible assets increasingly dominating the New Economy, and the possibility of under-investment in these assets. For a realistic analysis we introduce a Schumpeterian market environment (the experimentally organized economy). Weak property rights prevail when the rights to access, use, andtrade in intangible assets cannot be fully exercised. The trade-off between the benefits of open access on the Internet, and the incentive effects of strengthened property rights, depend both on the particular strategy a firm employs to …

Living With Life-Threatening Illness: An Inquiry Into Children's Experience Of Cancer, Kristy Novinski Jan 2003

Living With Life-Threatening Illness: An Inquiry Into Children's Experience Of Cancer, Kristy Novinski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous studies concerning children living with illness have been limited by (a) a narrow focus on the child's cognitive development, (b) reliance on sources outside of the child's experience, (c) reliance on methods based on the language and quantitative modes of measuring used by adults rather than the experience of the child, (d) models that emphasize methods of control in coping, and (e) a tendency to pathologize the responses of the child.

In contrast, the current study involved speaking directly with school-aged children living with a diagnosis of cancer. The qualitative method developed for this study involved a two-fold approach, …

Automated Grammatical Tagging Of Language Samples From Children With And Without Language Impairment, Deborah Millet Jan 2003

Automated Grammatical Tagging Of Language Samples From Children With And Without Language Impairment, Deborah Millet

Theses and Dissertations

Grammatical classification ("tagging") of words in language samples is a component of syntactic analysis for both clinical and research purposes. Previous studies have shown that probability-based software can be used to tag samples from adults and typically-developing children with high (about 95%) accuracy. The present study found that similar accuracy can be obtained in tagging samples from school-aged children with and without language impairment if the software uses tri-gram rather than bi-gram probabilities and large corpora are used to obtain probability information to train the tagging software.

The Psychological Impact Of Companion Animals For Older Adults Who Reside Alone, Tess Reed Jan 2003

The Psychological Impact Of Companion Animals For Older Adults Who Reside Alone, Tess Reed

Theses : Honours

Companion animals have been identified as improving the physical and emotional health of some older adults (Collis & McNicholas, 1998). This qualitative study explored the psychological impact of owning a cat or a dog for persons aged 65 or older who resided alone. Nine participants, two male and seven female, were recruited through local media advertisements in the Guildford area to participate in a semi-structured interview about their relationship with their pet. Following transcription the semi-structured interviews were analysed using thematic analysis (Aronson, 1994). Four major themes emerged with participants reporting their pets provided satisfaction that impacted on several areas …

A Linux-Based Graphical User Interface For The Creation And Reading Of The Frame Format: Version 2.4, Muhammed Aoun

Theses : Honours

To gain further knowledge of how the universe began, a new international co-operated project wishes not only to "see" stars exploding, but also to "hear" the explosion. It is theorised that the ability to "listen" to an explosion is possible by detecting gravitational waves. Gravitational waves are omitted when a star explodes, travelling through the cosmos at an exceptional speed. It is estimated that a gravity wave takes only 40 milliseconds to pass through the earth. Thus the aim of this international collaboration is to detect a gravitational wave. To accurately detect such waves, there needs to be several global …

An Introduction To Genetically Modified Foods, Kathleen Hart Jan 2003

An Introduction To Genetically Modified Foods, Kathleen Hart

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Thank you. I have been visiting a lot of bookstores since Eating in the Dark came out last year, including a wonderful bookstore, I should mention, which is right here in Richmond called the Fountain Bookstore. People often ask me if I’ve changed my diet as a result of what I learned while researching the book. Mainly, have I stopped eating genetically engineered foods? I always answer that I’m an American, so of course I eat genetically engineered foods because we have no choice in the matter. GM foods are ubiquitous in the processed foods, and they’re not labeled. But …

High-Speed Adaptive Interferometer For Optical Coherence-Domain Reflectometry Through Turbid Media, L. Peng, P. Yu, D. D. Nolte, M. R. Melloch Jan 2003

High-Speed Adaptive Interferometer For Optical Coherence-Domain Reflectometry Through Turbid Media, L. Peng, P. Yu, D. D. Nolte, M. R. Melloch

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Two-wave mixing in a dynamic holographic film acts as the adaptive beam combiner in a short-coherence interferometer that performs optical coherence-domain reflectometry (OCDR) through turbid media. This approach combines the high spatial resolution and sensitivity of coherence-domain reflectometry with photorefractive quantum-well-based adaptive homodyne detection. A depth resolution of 28 p,m and penetration through 16 mean free paths in a turbid medium have been obtained in this adaptive OCDR application. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.

Holographic Optical Coherence Imaging Of Tumor Spheroids, P. Yu, M. Mustata, J. J. Turek, P. M. W. French, M. R. Melloch, D. D. Nolte

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present depth-resolved coherence-domain images of living tissue using a dynamic holographic semiconductor film. An AlGaAs photorefractive quantum-well device is used in an adaptive interferometer that records coherent backscattered (image-bearing) light from inside rat osteogenic sarcoma tumor spheroids up to 1 mm in diameter in vitro. The data consist of sequential holographic image frames at successive depths through the tumor represented as a visual video "fly-through." The images from the tumor spheroids reveal heterogeneous structures presumably caused by necrosis and microcalcifications characteristic of human tumors in their early avascular growth. High-Speed Wide-Field Coherence-Gated Imaging Via Photorefractive Holography With Photorefractive Multiple Quantum Well Devices, C. Dunsby, D. Mayorga-Cruz, I. Munro, Y. Gu, P. M. W. French, D. D. Nolte, M. R. Melloch

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

The parallel pixel acquisition inherent in wide-field coherence-gated imaging techniques offers the possibility of high-frame-rate imaging and volumetric imaging, including through scattering media. We discuss photorefractive holography using sensitive, dynamic photorefractive multiple quantum well (PRQW) films as a promising approach and, after reviewing the factors that determine the sensitivity of this technique, we demonstrate that high-frame-rate wide-field coherence gated imaging is possible at 830 frames per second with PRQW devices using a non-intensified camera to record the diffracted signal.

High-Speed Depth-Sectioned Wide-Field Imaging Using Low-Coherence Photorefractive Holographic Microscopy, C. Dunsby, Y. Gu, Z. Ansari, P. M. W. French, L. Peng, P. Yu, M. R. Melloch, D. D. Nolte

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Low-coherence photorefractive holography has the potential to acquire wide-field coherence-gated images at frame rates approaching 1000 frames/s, including through scattering media. We present a quantitative analysis of the system optimization and limits of performance for coherence-gated imaging through scattering media using photorefractive holography and compare this performance to direct CCD detection. We show that, for high optical quality recording photorefractive multiple quantum well devices, photorefractive holography has the potential to provide a higher dynamic range than is possible with direct CCD-based detection. A General Framework For Nonlinear Multigrid Inversion, Seungseok Oh, Adam B. Milstein, Charles A. Bouman, Kevin J. Webb Jan 2003

A General Framework For Nonlinear Multigrid Inversion, Seungseok Oh, Adam B. Milstein, Charles A. Bouman, Kevin J. Webb

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

A variety of new imaging modalities, such as optical diffusion tomography, require the inversion of a forward problem that is modeled by the solution to a 3-D partial differential equation. For these applications, image reconstruction is particularly difficult because the forward problem is both nonlinear and computationally expensive to evaluate. In this paper, we propose a general framework for nonlinear multigrid inversion that is applicable to a wide variety of inverse problems. The multigrid inversion algorithm results from the application of recursive multigrid techniques to the solution of optimization problems arising from inverse problems. The method works by dynamically adjusting …

Ultrasound Detection Through Turbid Media, P. Yu, L. Peng, D. D. Nolte, M. R. Melloch Jan 2003

Ultrasound Detection Through Turbid Media, P. Yu, L. Peng, D. D. Nolte, M. R. Melloch

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Optical coherence-domain reflectometry and laser-based ultrasound detection have been combined with the use of adaptive optics to detect ultrasound through turbid media. The dynamic hologram in a photorefractive quantum-well device performs as a coherence gate that eliminates multiply scattered background. Quadrature homodyne detection conditions are selected by the choice of center wavelength of the pulse spectrum, requiring no active stabilization or feedback. A depth resolution of 30 mum was achieved, with a pulse duration of nominally 120 fs for ultrasound detection through turbid media up to optical thicknesses of 11 mean free scattering lengths. (C) 2003 Optical Society of America.
