Bioterrorism Defense: Are State Mandated Compulsory Vaccination Programs An Infringement Upon A Citizen's Constitutional Rights, Brendon Kohrs Jan 2003

Bioterrorism Defense: Are State Mandated Compulsory Vaccination Programs An Infringement Upon A Citizen's Constitutional Rights, Brendon Kohrs

Journal of Law and Health

The agents of anthrax and smallpox threaten the health and welfare of the state citizenry and therefore the state can enact legislation appropriate to offset the possible harm. In order for the enacted legislation to withstand a constitutional challenge, the possible harm has to be a compelling governmental interest of public safety and welfare narrowly tailored to that goal. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the United States Department of Health and Human Services has the ability to recommend a compulsory vaccination program for citizens, and this program would not be in violation of a person's constitutional …

Dramatic Relocation: The Time And Place For Shakespeare On Film, Lydia Lunning Jan 2003

Dramatic Relocation: The Time And Place For Shakespeare On Film, Lydia Lunning

Honors Papers

"Doing Shakespeare is simply harder than anything else," Colm Feore says to his interviewer, while apparently on break from rehearsing his role as Marcus Andronicus before principal photography begins for Julie Taymor's film, Titus (1999). "It's harder than Chekov, it's harder than Moliere, it's harder than Racine, it's harder than .. . anything!" ("The Making of Titus," DVD Special Features). The team involved in Michael Almereyda's Hamlet (2000) as well as that of Richard Loncraine's Richard III (1995) didn't have it any easier. By all accounts of each filmmaking process, none of the films to be discussed here had the …

Yoga 'Holistic' Exercise In Ohio, Theresa Schmidt Jan 2003

Yoga 'Holistic' Exercise In Ohio, Theresa Schmidt

Honors Papers

Yoga is depicted in U.S. popular culture as the sacred practice of an ancient tradition, guaranteed to initiate the western participant into the secrets of health and well being, i.e. a low-impact exercise regimen. However, the yoga that is practiced in the U.S. is often removed from its actual history. The physical practices are regularly isolated from the holistic philosophy and come to be understood as the entirety of yoga and marketed as a "spiritual" form of exercise. This paper will explore literature relevant to these themes and examine the reasons for yoga's popularity and the manner in which it …

"Stuff You Really Want To Read:" Pleasure And Negotiation In Teen Magazine Reading, Margaret E. Troyer Jan 2003

"Stuff You Really Want To Read:" Pleasure And Negotiation In Teen Magazine Reading, Margaret E. Troyer

Honors Papers

The first half of my paper closely examines teen magazines, with three major thematic areas of focus. Because the constructed ideal is such a fundamental part of teen magazines' pleasure, I look at editors' rhetorical strategies for establishing their expectations of their audience. Teen magazines depend so heavily on advertising revenue that they must necessarily construct the ideal teen as materialistic. In my next section, I consider some effects of magazines' focus on commodities. Finally, I look at the ways in which the special discourse of teen magazines shapes the constructed ideal and affects readers' pleasure. I focus on the …

The Effects Of Regulatory Threats And Strategic Bargaining On Firms' Voluntary Participation In Pollution Reduction Programs, Claire M. Jahns Jan 2003

The Effects Of Regulatory Threats And Strategic Bargaining On Firms' Voluntary Participation In Pollution Reduction Programs, Claire M. Jahns

Honors Papers

After years of intense debate, global climate change has finally been acknowledged as a serious threat to global biological, political and economic systems. There is overwhelming evidence that the atmospheric warming observed over the course of the past 50 years, as well as the increasing incidence of extreme weather events and floods, is being caused by the acceleration of the rate in which greenhouse gases (GHGs) produced by the burning of fossil fuels are being released into the atmosphere. The extreme weather and weather-related events associated with climate change, such as landslides and flooding, totaled roughly $40 billion in the …

Cloning And Characterization Of A Git1 Homolog Gene From Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Christi Nolder Jan 2003

Cloning And Characterization Of A Git1 Homolog Gene From Schizosaccharomyces Pombe, Christi Nolder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phosphatidylinositol (PI) deacylation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae results in the formation and excretion of glycerophosphoinositol (GPI). This is a predominant route of PI turnover and is not unique to S. cerevisiae. Released GPI can be transported back into the cell through a membrane permease encoded by the GIT1 gene, Git1p. Maximum transport is achieved in low inositol/low phosphate conditions at pHs below 7, and the addition of a protonophore to the GPI transport assay abolishes transport activity. These findings suggest that Git1p is a proton symporter. An excess of unlabeled glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P) inhibits the transport of radiolabeled GPI into S. cerevisiae. …

Problem Solving In A Multidisciplinary Environment: Must Ethics Get In The Way Of Holistic Service, J. Michael Norwood Jan 2003

Problem Solving In A Multidisciplinary Environment: Must Ethics Get In The Way Of Holistic Service, J. Michael Norwood

Faculty Scholarship

Authored with Alan Paterson. The article analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of delivering legal services as a part of a multidisciplinary practice (MDP). The analysis considers multidisciplinary practices from the perspectives of clients served, lawyers, the legal profession, and the general public, but emphasizes the quality of the relationships amongst the legal and nonlegal professionals involved in the MDP. While sounding a cautionary note about the need to preserve core ethical and professional values when implementing a MDP, the article seeks a balance among the common, and sometimes competing interests, of the public, the legal profession, and society whereby it …

International Regulation Of Underwater Sound: Establishing Rules And Standards To Address Ocean Noise Pollution, Elena Marie Mccarthy Jan 2003

International Regulation Of Underwater Sound: Establishing Rules And Standards To Address Ocean Noise Pollution, Elena Marie Mccarthy

Open Access Dissertations

An increasing awareness of anthropogenic sound in the ocean has generated international concern that it is affecting marine mammal behavior and could affect entire marine ecosystems as well. Presently there is a lack of a coherent policy framework for evaluating the environmental impacts of underwater noise pollution. No international treaties or laws specifically address the transmission of sound in waters under national jurisdiction or on the high seas. This dissertation examines the issue of underwater noise pollution in a global context and considers the extent to which the international legal and environmental community has addressed it. The sharp increase in …

Affectation: “Masculinity” And Mass Culture, Jp Baertson Jan 2003

Affectation: “Masculinity” And Mass Culture, Jp Baertson

McNair Scholars Journal

In response to the claim that there has been insufficient substantial critique of “masculinity’s” archaic and ambiguous perceptions, this project aims at establishing awareness of society’s processes and mechanisms, allowing for dissection of the attributes, understandings, and implications of the universal and particular denotations and the prescriptive descriptions of “masculinity” by mass culture. By contrasting while combining various theories and identifications of “masculinity” through the film Fight Club, this examination outlines the various crossroads negotiated in cultural ambivalence, where innate and essential parameters are inappropriate. Elimination of “the natural” in non-identity is a potential catalyst for revolutionizing the epistemological and …

Perceptions Of Minorities' Criminal Involvement In Grand Rapids: Community And Media Dialogue, Rafael E. Castanon Jan 2003

Perceptions Of Minorities' Criminal Involvement In Grand Rapids: Community And Media Dialogue, Rafael E. Castanon

McNair Scholars Journal

This study examines media overrepresentation and its effects on community perception. The research examines the perception of racial/ethnic involvement in violent crimes in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Grand Rapids Police Department arrest reports for violent crime were dichotomized by race/ethnicity and compared to news articles reporting violent crimes found in the Grand Rapids Press to determine if a disparity exists between those data sets. To measure public perceptions, questionnaires were administered concerning racial/ethnic groups and their likelihood to commit violent crimes. The overall intention is to provide a better understanding of root causes of minority disparity within the Criminal Justice System.

Essential Components Of Psychosocial Care For Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients, Beverly Lee Laird Jan 2003

Essential Components Of Psychosocial Care For Newly Diagnosed Breast Cancer Patients, Beverly Lee Laird

All ETDs from UAB

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the United States, and, today, there are approximately 1.7 million women living with breast cancer. Due to earlier detection and better treatments, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer has increased dramatically in the past few decades. With better survival rates has come increased attention to other needs for cancer patients, including information and psychosocial support. Providing appropriate psychosocial care as an adjunct to standard medical treatment is expected to improve quality of life for cancer survivors, which is one of the three major 2015 goals for the American …
