Adolescent And Youth Sexual And Reproductive Health: Charting Directions For A Second Generation Of Programming, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in collaboration with the Population Council, convened a three-day workshop May 1–3, 2002, at the Population Council’s headquarters in New York. The workshop provided an opportunity to review research and programs in the area of adolescent reproductive health and development (the “first generation”) and to think critically about key lessons learned from this work as we move forward into the “second generation” of work with this important population. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from that workshop. Key points are gathered into two clusters: those that underscore principles of program planning, design, and …

Impact Of A Young-Earth Creationist Apologetics Course On Student Creation Worldview, Tom Henderson, Steve Deckard, David A. Dewitt Jan 2003

Impact Of A Young-Earth Creationist Apologetics Course On Student Creation Worldview, Tom Henderson, Steve Deckard, David A. Dewitt

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Science educators holding an evolutionary worldview are concerned about the teaching of young -Earth creationism (YEC) and generally oppose its presentation in public schools. This paper examines the influence of a YEC apologetics course on Creation and evolution worldview attitudes of Liberty University students. The creation worldview test (CWT) was administered and a total scale score along with three subscales scores in theology, science and age were analyzed. Student pre-test scores indicated some weaknesses, suggesting departure from a solid YEC worldview. Following the course, students shifted significantly toward stronger agreement with the YEC position in total score, science and age. …

Completing The Fertility Transition In The Developing World: The Role Of Educational Differences And Fertility Preferences, John Bongaarts Jan 2003

Completing The Fertility Transition In The Developing World: The Role Of Educational Differences And Fertility Preferences, John Bongaarts

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This study summarizes patterns of educational differentials in wanted and unwanted fertility at different stages of the fertility transition based on data from DHS surveys in 57 less developed countries. As the transition proceeds, educational differentials in wanted fertility tend to decline and differentials in unwanted fertility tend to rise. An assessment of fertility patterns in more and less developed countries with low fertility concludes that these differentials are likely to remain substantial when less developed countries reach the end of their transitions. This finding implies that the educational composition of the population remains a key predictor of overall fertility …

Primary Schooling In Sub-Saharan Africa: Recent Trends And Current Challenges, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Paul C. Hewett Jan 2003

Primary Schooling In Sub-Saharan Africa: Recent Trends And Current Challenges, Cynthia B. Lloyd, Paul C. Hewett

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

At the dawn of the twenty-first century we estimate that more than 37 million young adolescents aged 10-14 in sub-Saharan Africa will not complete primary school. Our estimates are based on data from nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys from 26 countries, collectively representing 83 percent of the sub-Saharan youth population. This number is nearly twice the entire population of children aged 10-14 in the United States, virtually all of whom will complete primary school. Reducing the number of uneducated African youth is a primary objective of the United Nations as laid out in the Millennium Development Goal for education, …

Condom Use And Abstinence Among Unmarried Young People In Zimbabwe: Which Strategy, Whose Agenda?, Ravai Marindo, Steve Pearson, John B. Casterline Jan 2003

Condom Use And Abstinence Among Unmarried Young People In Zimbabwe: Which Strategy, Whose Agenda?, Ravai Marindo, Steve Pearson, John B. Casterline

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This paper compares the views about abstinence and condom use expressed by young people in Zimbabwe in focus-group discussions with the views underlying national policies and religious and traditional beliefs. Young people’s decisions to adopt one or the other of these risk-reduction strategies may not necessarily indicate genuine individual choices, but rather their deference to adults’ interests as they understand those interests. Policymakers and traditional and Christian leaders promote abstinence as the exclusive strategy for all young people, whereas nongovernmental organizations and the private sector promote condom use. Evidence from the focus-group discussions indicates that adolescents are aware of this …

Rural Schools In America: Will No Child Be Left Behind? The Elusive Quest For Equal Educational Opportunities, Judith A. Winston

Nebraska Law Review

This article focuses on how the struggle for educational quality and equality in rural public education is faring today and the degree to which the new federal law, the No Child Left Behind Act, promises a better future for rural schools. Part II provides a composite portrait of the lives of rural students and the communities in which they live. Part III establishes a legal context and brief history of the as yet elusive quest for equality in these communities. Part IV outlines the components of the federal effort to reform education nationally and addresses whether the reform effort is …

Modeling Class Counsel, Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr. Jan 2003

Modeling Class Counsel, Geoffrey C. Hazard Jr.

Nebraska Law Review

The class suit has become an established and increasingly prominent institution of our procedural system. Our system of law enforcement through private litigation, including class suits and other aggregative civil procedures, is virtually unique throughout the world and is an integral element of the American governance system. A key institution in class suit procedure is the role of plaintiffs counsel, but a clear concept of the role of class counsel, and counsel's relationship to the class, has been difficult to formulate. Lawyers who would be counsel for a class, particularly a class proposed by the lawyer, should be expected, like …

Plantlet Regeneration In Abies Cilicica Carr. And Abies Cilicica X Abies Nordmanniana Hybrid Via Somatic Embryogenesis, Bozena Vookova, Andrej Kormutak

Turkish Journal of Botany

Somatic embryogenesis was initiated from immature zygotic embryos of Abies cilicica Carr. and its hybrid A. cilicica x A. nordmanniana. Schenk and Hildebrandt medium (SH) supplemented with 5 µM benzylaminopurine was used as the initiation medium. In A. cilicica, the initiation of embryonal suspensor mass (ESM) frequency ranged from 5.4 to 63.5%, and 28.6% of these cell lines formed mature somatic embryos. In A. cilicica x A. nordmanniana, from 3 to 27.6% of zygotic embryos formed ESM, and maturation of somatic embryos was observed in 34.8% lines. For somatic embryo maturation, Murashige, Skoog and SH media supplemented with 4% maltose …

In Vitro Clonal Propagation Of A Multipurpose Tree, Ziziphus Spina-Christi (L.) Desf., C. Sudhersan, J. Hussain

Turkish Journal of Botany

A simple and efficient protocol for the clonal micropropagation of Ziziphus spina-christi (L.) Desf., a multipurpose native tree species highly adapted to the harsh environmental conditions of Kuwait, has been established using shoot tips and stem nodal segments as explants. The explants were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium with and without growth regulators. The nodal segments and shoot tips isolated from the primary cultures were cultured on hormone-free MS media containing 100 mg/l myo-Inositol, 150 mg/l glutamine and 2.5% sucrose for plant growth and elongation. Shoots for multiplication were maintained on MS media with low concentrations of …

The authors discuss how participation in the online discussion forum is a form of public writing in which the students …

Reliability And The Admissibility Of Experts, Dale A. Nance Jan 2003

Reliability And The Admissibility Of Experts, Dale A. Nance

Faculty Publications

Modern law on expert testimony insists, as a condition of admissibility, that the asserted expertise be determined by the trial judge to be reliable. Reliability is usually characterized as a dichotomous attribute of evidence, as if expertise were either reliable or unreliable. This article argues that making progress in the development of meaningful and appropriate restrictions on the admissibility of expert testimony requires that we abandon this conceptualization and understand the implications of endorsing a gradational notion of reliability in which evidence can be more or less reliable and in which a comparative assessment of reliability is prominent. Consistent with …

Managing Protein In Spring Wheat With Aerial And Satellite Imagery, Dennis L. Wright Jr., Glen Ritchie, V. Philip Rasmussen, R. Douglas Ramsey, Doran Baker

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Nitrogen fertilizer application can help wheat growers increase crop value and marketability by increasing grain quality. Nitrogen (N) is often applied at heading as a method of increasing protein content and therefore quality of wheat. Our objectives were to obtain spectral signatures of wheat under various N rates (0, 72, 180, 234 kg N ha-1), test various spectral methods of identifying crop stress, and observe the grain protein response to a midseason N application. Spectral data from satellite and aerial platforms were compared to preseason N treatments and flag-leaf tissue samples. Spectral data correlated well with preseason and flag leaf …

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Project: Activities Report 2003, Bridget Patrick Jan 2003

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Eradication Project: Activities Report 2003, Bridget Patrick

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious bacterial disease and poses a risk to domestic livestock, wildlife and public health in the United States (U.S). In 1917, the U.S. government began a comprehensive national bovine TB eradication program. The disease has been nearly eradicated from livestock in the U.S., but areas of infection resurface periodically. Michigan was declared free of bovine TB in 1975 and received Disease Free status in 1979. In 1975 a free-ranging white-tailed deer in Alcona County was confirmed to be bovine TB positive. It was thought to be an anomaly, and no policy was adopted to look …

Aerosol Exposure Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) To Mycobacterium Bovis, Mitchell V. Palmer, W. Ray Waters, Diana L. Whipple Jan 2003

Aerosol Exposure Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) To Mycobacterium Bovis, Mitchell V. Palmer, W. Ray Waters, Diana L. Whipple

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium bovis affects both captive and free-ranging Cervidae in the United States. Various animal models have been developed to study tuberculosis of both humans and animals. Generally, tuberculosis is transmitted by aerosol and oral routes. Models of aerosol exposure of large animals to M. bovis are uncommon. In order to develop a reliable method of aerosol exposure of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to M. bovis, 12 healthy white-tailed deer, aged 8–10 mo, were infected by aerosol exposure to 2x105 to 1x106 colony forming units (CFU) (high dose, n=4) of M. bovis or …
