This Essay demonstrates the strategic advantage of narrow patents and unprotected publication of R&D output. Broad patents might stifle follow-on improvements by deterring potential cumulative innovators, who fear being held up by the initial inventor at the ex post licensing stage. By opting for a narrower patent and unprotected publication, the initial patent holder commits not to hold up follow-on inventors, thus promoting sequential innovation and generating lucrative licensing fees. Counterintuitively, in cumulative innovation settings, less protection benefits the patentee. This finding may serve as a counter-force to the much-lamented "anti-commons" problem. More generally, our theory demonstrates that the divergence …

A Good Start To Numeracy : Effective Numeracy Strategies From Research And Practice In Early Childhood, Brian Doig, Barry Mcrae, Ken Rowe
A Good Start To Numeracy : Effective Numeracy Strategies From Research And Practice In Early Childhood, Brian Doig, Barry Mcrae, Ken Rowe
Student learning processes
The Commonwealth-funded Project Good Start was a longitudinal study of children during their year before school and the first year of school, involving preschool centres and schools across Australia. It considered the questions: how can effective numeracy programs be identified at both year-before-school and the early years of school; and what constitutes evidence of effectiveness. This report provides a review of the international and Australian research literature on numeracy in early childhood that complements the Department of Education, Science and Training’s major review of the numeracy literature undertaken by Deakin University. It is designed to provide early childhood professionals and …
Retirement And High Level Human Capital, Irving Gershenberg
Retirement And High Level Human Capital, Irving Gershenberg
Gerontology Institute Publications
Given that demographic trends in economically advanced industrial countries such as our own continue to shift toward increasingly older, formally retired populations, we need to find ways to keep more of this older retired population productive. Economists and others differ in their estimation regarding the ability and/or willingness on part of the retired to retain, let alone utilize the know-how, the human capital accumulated prior to retirement. This is as true for those who have spent their work life engaged in producing and communicating new ideas and synthesizing and diffusing what is known, those who have accumulated what I term …
Remote Sensing Modeling Of Land Surface Temperature, Jiansheng Yang
Remote Sensing Modeling Of Land Surface Temperature, Jiansheng Yang
Open Access Dissertations
This study addresses the fundamental science question of modeling land surface temperature (LST) by combining the field experiment, spatial interpolation, and satellite thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing. Specific objectives of this study are to: (1) calibrate the spatial interpolation of LST using satellite-derived surface emissivity; (2) calibrate the conversion from at-satellite brightness temperature to LST using surface variables; and (3) simulate and predict the air temperature profiles in a forest canopy using field observations and satellite TIR data. To this end, Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) TIR data were applied to derive surface emissivity and brightness temperature. Hourly temperature …

The Zigzag Path Of A Pseudo-Triangulation, Oswin Aichholzer, Günter Rote, Bettina Speckmann, Ileana Streinu
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We define the zigzag path of a pseudo-triangulation, a concept generalizing the path of a triangulation of a point set. The pseudotriangulation zigzag path allows us to use divide-and-conquer type of approaches for suitable (i.e., decomposable) problems on pseudo-triangulations. For this we provide an algorithm that enumerates all pseudotriangulation zigzag paths (of all pseudo-triangulations of a given point set with respect to a given line) in O(n2) time per path and O(n2) space, where n is the number of points. We illustrate applications of our scheme which include a novel algorithm to count the number of pseudotriangulations of a point …

The Foldings Of A Square To Convex Polyhedra, Rebecca Alexander, Heather Dyson, Joseph O'Rourke
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
The structure of the set of all convex polyhedra foldable from a square is detailed. It is proved that five combinatorially distinct nondegenerate polyhedra, and four different flat polyhedra, are realizable. All the polyhedra are continuously deformable into each other, with the space of polyhedra having the topology of four connected rings.

Considerations On The Emerging Implementation Of Biometric Technology, Robin Feldman
Considerations On The Emerging Implementation Of Biometric Technology, Robin Feldman
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
The United States is embarking on widespread implementation of biometric technology, which uses automated methods to identify people based on their physiological and behavioral characteristics. Regardless of how much we invest in establishing standards for reliability of the technology and protections of the data, no system will be foolproof. Biometric determinations will be subject to mistakes, fraud, and abuse through human and technological error, both intentional and inadvertent. We should, therefore, take this opportunity to develop methods for individuals to review and challenge biometric determinations. In particular, this article suggests a doctrinal framework for challenging biometric determinations made by administrative …
Statistically Designed Spheronization And Scale-Up Of Ibuprofen Microparticulates Using The Rotor Disk Fluid-Bed Technology: Coating For Prolonged Release And Hard Gelatin Encapsulation Of Microparticulates, Beatrice Chukwumezie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim was to develop uncoated and coated ibuprofen microparticulates in a one-step fluid-bed machine with rotor-disk insert, for immediate and prolonged drug delivery. Feasibilty studies using ibuprofen: Avicel (RC-581; 50:50), sodium lauryl sulfate (1%) as surfactant and water as binder in FLM-15 Vector Flo-coater with 12" stainless-steel and waffle-disk inserts showed that amount of binder, plate type and the presence of surfactant affected most of spheroid characteristics. These variables were used in a 2x2x3 full factorial (replicated) experiment. Blocking was used to study batch-to-batch reproducibility of the process and product variables. Our results confirmed that the binder amount, plate-type …

Phylogenomic Identification Of Five New Human Homologs Of The Dna Repair Enzyme Alkb, Michal A. Kurowski, Ashok S. Bhagwat, Grzegorz Papaj, Janusz M. Bujnicki
Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship
Abstract
Background
Combination of biochemical and bioinformatic analyses led to the discovery of oxidative demethylation – a novel DNA repair mechanism catalyzed by the Escherichia coli AlkB protein and its two human homologs, hABH2 and hABH3. This discovery was based on the prediction made by Aravind and Koonin that AlkB is a member of the 2OG-Fe2+ oxygenase superfamily.
Results
In this article, we report identification and sequence analysis of five human members of the (2OG-Fe2+) oxygenase superfamily designated here as hABH4 through hABH8. These experimentally uncharacterized and poorly annotated genes were not associated with the AlkB family …

The Use Of Speech Disfluency As An Indicant Of Paradigm Development In Pharmacy's Academic Subdisciplines, Erin Renee Holmes
The Use Of Speech Disfluency As An Indicant Of Paradigm Development In Pharmacy's Academic Subdisciplines, Erin Renee Holmes
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study compared speech disfluency rates within five subdisciplines of pharmacy to estimate their paradigm development, and identified alternative factors associated with differing rates. Rates were observed in randomly selected courses. Lecturers completed a modified version of the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation survey and a self-rated anxiety measure. Ten percent of recordings were randomly selected for analysis by two judges to determine inter-reliability. An ANCOVA was conducted on the frequency of lecture disfluencies, with the frequency of interview disfluencies serving as the covariate. The overall mean disfluency rate in lectures was 2.11 disfluencies/minute. Average dislfuency rates among the five …
Socratic Encounters: Plato's Alcibiades, Andre Archie
Socratic Encounters: Plato's Alcibiades, Andre Archie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this dissertation is to situate our reading of the Platonic dialogue Alcibiades Major among both ancient and modern readings of the dialogue. Since the nineteenth century the issue of authenticity has preoccupied most modern commentators of the dialogue, but from all reasonable evidence, commentators from the ancient world had no such qualms about attributing the authorship of Alcibiades Major to Plato. Our reading of Alcibiades Major is in line with modern commentators who take both the dialogue's dramatic features and educative value seriously, while not ignoring that in some quarters Alcibiades Major's authorship is still in dispute. …
03. Getting Our Thoughts Together: Instructional Manual To Accompany 'Elfie', Second Edition, Matthew Lipman
03. Getting Our Thoughts Together: Instructional Manual To Accompany 'Elfie', Second Edition, Matthew Lipman
Early Elementary School Curriculum
The cognitive skills emphasized in Elfie – distinction-making and connection-making – are those on which all-subsequent reasoning rests. They are accompanied by the criteria that are appropriate to them: sameness and difference. Other operations like the making of comparisons, the discovery of uniformities, the identification of classes, the formation of concepts, and the formulation of definition, all depend upon the logical infrastructure of these two sets of skills and criteria. Elfie should therefore be seen as the base of the Philosophy for Children program.

Natural Disasters: An Integrated Curriculum Unit, Grades 3-5, Institute For The Development Of Gifted Education, Ricks Center For Gifted Children, University Of Denver
Ricks Curriculum Units Series
An integrated curriculum is an instructional approach that connects the disciplines to an underlying theme or topic. Immersing students in an integrated-thematic unit provides the backdrop for experiences to occur across the disciplines. Shaping coursework around integrated themes is especially appropriate for gifted students, however using an integrated-thematic curriculum is appropriate for all learners as it develops students' abilities to make connections, to solve problems by looking at multiple perspectives, and to integrate information from different fields of experience. An integrated-thematic curriculum permits students to be active participants in their own learning as they design their own explorations and take …

Generalized Geologic Map For Land-Use Planning: Scott County, Kentucky, Daniel I. Carey, Martin C. Noger
Map and Chart--KGS
This map is not intended to be used for selecting individual sites. Its purpose is to inform land-use planners, government officials, and the public in a general way about geologic bedrock conditions that affect the selection of sites for various purposes. The properties of thick soils may supersede those of the underlying bedrock and should be considered on a site-to-site basis. At any site, it is important to understand the characteristics of both the soils and the underlying rock.
