Modification Of The Penn State Forage And Total Mixed Ration Particle Separator And The Effects Of Moisture Content On Its Measurements, P. J. Kononoff, A. J. Heinrichs, D. R. Buckmaster

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The Penn State Particle Separator has led to widespread measurement of forage and total mixed ration (TMR) particle size. However, a large proportion of small particles may pass through both sieves when a TMR is analyzed, and field research has suggested that both shaking frequency and sample dry matter may affect the results. The objectives of this project were to test the effects of an additional sieve with a smaller aperture size, shaking frequency, and sample moisture content on results obtained. A sieve was constructed out of wire with a nominal size aperture of 1.18 mm. Samples of alfalfa haylage, …

The Design Of A Business Simulation Using A System-Dynamics-Based Approach, Steven Gold Jan 2003

The Design Of A Business Simulation Using A System-Dynamics-Based Approach, Steven Gold

Articles

Research on business simulation design has been mostly on a sub-system level. Yet the business environment is complex by nature, characterized by interconnected organizational elements with nonlinear feedback loops, and requires a systems approach to be modeled effectively. In this paper a systems-dynamics based interactive model of a business enterprise simulation is developed, consisting of 18 equations. The model draws heavily upon the economic theory of the firm and the expansive body of prior research on the design of business simulations. The focus is on the linkages between the production, cost, revenues, profits and stock market value of the firm. …

Getting Stuck Between Bottom And Top: State Competition For Corporate Charters In The Presence Of Network Effects, Brett Mcdonnell Jan 2003

Getting Stuck Between Bottom And Top: State Competition For Corporate Charters In The Presence Of Network Effects, Brett Mcdonnell

Articles

For decades, American legal scholars have debated over the implications of allowing corporations to choose in which state they will incorporate, irrespective of where they do business. Until recently the debate has centered almost exclusively on whether the managers who choose where to incorporate have incentive to choose a state whose laws favor managers to the disadvantage of shareholders (the "race to the bottom" thesis) or whether their incentives are to choose states whose laws treat shareholders properly (the "race to the top" thesis). Recently, some scholars have questioned whether the state charter competition process will necessarily lead to an …

Fishes Of The Red River In Arkansas, Thomas M. Buchanan, Drew Wilson, L. G. Claybrook, William G. Layher

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Fishes were collected from Red River mainstem habitats in Arkansas with seines, rotenone, hoop nets, gill nets, and trotlines from 1995 through 2001. Seventy-two species were identified distributed among 17 families, and 15 species were new records for the Red River in Arkansas. Eighty-three species are now historically known from the Arkansas segment of the Red River. Approximately 67% of the fishes known from the entire Red River have been found in the Arkansas segment, which is only 11% of the entire river length. Baseline data on the fish fauna of the Red River is critical for the analysis of …

Fenske-Hall Approximate Molecular Orbital Analysis Of The Chelating Carbene Complex Eta5-Cp'(Co)Mn{C(Oet)Ch2pph2}, John P. Graham Jan 2003

Fenske-Hall Approximate Molecular Orbital Analysis Of The Chelating Carbene Complex Eta5-Cp'(Co)Mn{C(Oet)Ch2pph2}, John P. Graham

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The novel three legged piano stool chelating carbene complex, Cp'(CO)Mn{C(OEt)CH2PPh2}, 1, exhibits interesting structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical properties. It also readily undergoes reaction with CO to produce the three legged piano stool complex Cp'(CO)2{PPh2C(OEt)=CH2}, 2. This is in contrast to the analogous non-chelating complex Cp(CO)(PPh3)Mn{C(OMe)CH2CH3}, 3, which does not react with CO. This paper discusses the results of Fenske-Hall approximate molecular orbital calculations on model complexes for 1 and 3. The differences in spectroscopic and electrochemical properties are explained using molecular orbital analysis. Possible reasons for the enhanced reactivity of 1are also presented.

Pid Stabilization Of A Position-Controlled Robot Manipulator Acting Independently Of In Collaboration With Human Arm, Anindo Roy, Kamran Iqbal Jan 2003

Pid Stabilization Of A Position-Controlled Robot Manipulator Acting Independently Of In Collaboration With Human Arm, Anindo Roy, Kamran Iqbal

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In this paper we develop framework for PID stabilization of a robot manipulator when using an object independently or in collaboration with a human arm. In both applications, the manipulator is equipped with a wrist sensor represented by an impedance. A second order manipulator transfer function along each coordinate direction is assumed. The aim of the paper is to design a PID controller when measurement of contact force, available via wrist sensor, is used to command the position controlled manipulator to a desired position and/or force profile. Necessary and sufficient conditions for stability of the closed loop system are developed …

Computer Modeling Of Tornado Forces On A Cubic Building Using Large Eddy Simulation, R. Panneer Selvam, Paul C. Millett Jan 2003

Computer Modeling Of Tornado Forces On A Cubic Building Using Large Eddy Simulation, R. Panneer Selvam, Paul C. Millett

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A tornado changes its wind speed and direction rapidly; therefore, it is difficult to study the effects of a tornado on buildings in a wind tunnel. The status of the tornado-structure interaction and various models of the tornado wind field found in literature are surveyed. Three dimensional computer modeling work using the turbulence model based on large eddy simulation is presented. The effect of a tornado on a cubic building is considered for this study. The Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are approximated by the finite difference method and solved by an implicit procedure. The force coefficients are plotted in time to …

Environmental Management Of Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (Weee) In Ireland, Simon Wilkinson Jan 2003

Environmental Management Of Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (Weee) In Ireland, Simon Wilkinson

Theses

This thesis follows two previous studies by the Author on the calculation of theoretical WEEE arisings, and an assessment of ecodesign practices in Ireland. It has established collection trials in five different locations throughout Ireland in order to characterise and quantify WEEE arisings, and to examine outlets for collected WEEE. Overall, during the twelve months of collection at the project locations, more than 450 tonnes of WEEE was collected from the public and recycled. Within the catchments of each facility, collection rates of between 2.1 and 3.5 kg/person/year were achieved during the twelve-month trial period. With further public awareness raising …

Heterogenous Network Management, Kenneth Carey Jan 2003

Heterogenous Network Management, Kenneth Carey

Theses

Enterprise level system development, integrating a broad range of arctures and legacy systems, has received significant attention over the last few yentegrated chain management, which allows companies to see their full manufactu inventory and sales channels, has driven much of this work. Delivering quality IP 1 wireless access is forcing similar integration in 2.5G and 3G telecom archires. Such integration has resulted in the emergence of multi-protocol heterogeneietworks, combining IP core backbones, legacy databases and switchinghnology. Heterogeneous networks, due to their diversity of equipment and suppoDrotocols, introduce challenges for today's network administrators, particularly ii areas of device configuration and alarm …

Extraction Of A Valuable Compound From A Waste Stream For Adm Ringaskiddy, Colin G. Burkley Jan 2003

Extraction Of A Valuable Compound From A Waste Stream For Adm Ringaskiddy, Colin G. Burkley

Theses

This thesis was originally conceived as a potential Masters Degree research programme by the management of ADM Ringaskiddy as a means of maximizing throughput through the plant’s wastewater treatment facility. This facility is a major producer of citric acid using beet molasses and a fermentation process. It was proposed that removal of a compound, known as betaine, from the citric acid process waste stream would reduce the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) content of the waste requiring treatment before disposal. This would be achieved by using the citric acid process waste as the feedstock for a betaine extraction process. The wastewater …

Relative Invertebrate Availability In Nebraska's Conservation Reserve Management Access Program, Ronald J. Leathers Jan 2003

Relative Invertebrate Availability In Nebraska's Conservation Reserve Management Access Program, Ronald J. Leathers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Conservation Reserve Management Access Program (CRP-MAP) is a joint effort of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and Pheasants Forever of Nebraska that seeks to address brood habitat needs of pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) and other grassland birds by light disking and interseeding legumes into portions of aging CRP fields. The program has two specific goals - increasing the total invertebrate availability as a food source for pheasant chicks and increasing the structural complexity of vegetation. This study compares invertebrate biomass and structural complexity of vegetation in treated (disked and interseeded with legumes) and idle portions of CRP-MAP fields to …

Modeling Sugarbeet Quality Variables From Satellite Images And Canopy Spectral Indices, Subodh Kulkarni Jan 2003

Modeling Sugarbeet Quality Variables From Satellite Images And Canopy Spectral Indices, Subodh Kulkarni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Remote sensing was used to model crop quality from measurements of canopy spectra. Three indices of canopy characteristics, derived from satellite image data, were tested for relationship to whole-field sugarbeet quality. Quality was quantified as recoverable sucrose per ton of harvested sugarbeets. Quality data were extracted from the year 2002 Field Database of the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Co-operative, (SMBSC), Renville, Minnesota. Linear regression models utilizing canopy indices and changes in canopy indices over time were tested for relationship to sugarbeet quality for four classes of sugarbeets. Classes of sugarbeet tested represented fields planted to a mix of varieties resistant …

First Records Of Conodonts From "The Permo-Carboniferous Of Demirözü" (Bayburt), Eastern Pontides, Ne Turkey, Şenol Çapkinoğlu

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Permo-Carboniferous sedimentary rocks, which belong to the pre-Jurassic basement of the Eastern Pontides, occur in the Cebre relative autochthon and the Hamurkesen thrust sheet in the Demirözü area, Bayburt, NE Turkey, and consist of the Çatalçeşme and Hardişi formations, respectively. Some limestone beds of the Çatalçeşme Formation in the village of Çatalçeşme produced the first conodont faunas encountered in Palaeozoic sediments of the Eastern Pontides. A rich conodont fauna with abundant Neognathodus bassleri (HARRIS & HOLLINGSWORTH), less Idiognathodus sp. and Streptognathodus elegantulus STAUFFER & PLUMMER, and rare Gondolella sp. were obtained from a densely-packed bioclastic packstone bed on the west …

Ft-Ir Studies Of Stereo Regular Pmma On Silica: Drying Effects, Bing Zhang, Suntree Kulkeratiyut, Suriyaphongse Kulkeratiyut, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

A great amount of work has been done on the configuration of surface adsorbed poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), especially on surfaces to which they have a strong attraction. Some studies have been make on the relationships between configuration and tacticity, molecular weight, adsorbed amount, and density of surface hydroxyl groups. The effect of tacticity on the conformation of alumina-adsorbed PMMA in solution and dry spin-coated films were studied by Grohen et al. Their results showed that surface-adsorbed PMMA chains adopted a relatively flat configuration, but iso-PMMA (isotactic) adsorbed on aluminum, with a much larger fraction of the bound carbonyl groups, had …
