The Ability Of The N-Alkane Technique To Estimate Intake And Diet Choice Of Sheep, R. M. Lewis, A. M. Magadlela, N. S. Jessop, G. C. Emmans

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

This study assessed the efficacy of the n-alkane technique to estimate intake and diet composition in animals given single foods or a choice of two. In thefirst experiment intakes of pelleted ryegrassand lucerne, given eitheralone or as a choice, were measured in lambshoused indoors in individual pens. Each of the three feeding treatments was given to 12 lambs at two degrees of maturity (0.30 and 0·45 of estimated mature sizes). The 12 lambs were constituted as three replicates of the two sexes of each of two breeds. The measured intakes werecompared with those estimated using the n-alkanes C31 andC33, found …

Fencing Methods To Reduce Deer Damage, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Michael J. Lavelle Jan 2003

Fencing Methods To Reduce Deer Damage, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Michael J. Lavelle

Wildlife Damage Management Conference Proceedings

The white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) may cause more damage than any other wildlife species. Deer damage occurs in various forms including crop production, automobile accidents, aviation collisions on runways, disease transmission, degradation of natural ecosystems, and destruction of ornamental plantings. One practical method of controlling deer damage is through the use of exclusionary fencing. White-tailed deer are challenging to exclude as they are able to jump 3.0-m fences or fit through spaces > 20 cm wide. Some deer problems (disease outbreaks, aircraft runways, and busy highways in deer migration corridors) may necessitate the installation of effective fencing no matter …

Double-Tree Scan: A Novel Low-Power Scan-Path Architecture, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Sharad C. Seth, Sheng Zhang Jan 2003

Double-Tree Scan: A Novel Low-Power Scan-Path Architecture, Bhargab B. Bhattacharya, Sharad C. Seth, Sheng Zhang

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

In a scan-based system with a large number of flip-flops, a major component of power is consumed during scan-shift and clocking operation in test mode. In this paper, a novel scan-path architecture called double-tree scan (DTS) is proposed that drastically reduces the scan-shift and clock activity during testing. The inherent combinatorial properties of double-tree structure are employed to design the scan architecture, clock gating logic, and a simple shift controller. The design is independent of the structure of the circuit-under-test (CUT) or its test set. It provides a significant reduction both in instantaneous and average power needed for clocking and …

Priority-Based Lambda Scheduler, Kalpana Ganesan, Byrav Ramamurthy Jan 2003

Priority-Based Lambda Scheduler, Kalpana Ganesan, Byrav Ramamurthy

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Optical networks provide a new dimension to meet the demands of exponentially growing traffic. Optical packet switching requires a good switch architecture, which eliminates the O/E/O conversion as much as possible. Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) provides a breakthrough to exploit the huge bandwidth of the optical fiber. Different applications have different requirements, which necessitate employing differentiated services. This paper presents the idea of a priority-based λ-scheduler, where the packets are differentiated into different classes and services are provided accordingly. For example, class 0 can correspond to non real time applications like email and ftp, while class 1 can correspond to …

Flanking Sequences Modulate Diepoxide Cross-Linking Efficiencies At The 5'-Gnc Sste, Gregory A. Sawyer Jan 2003

Flanking Sequences Modulate Diepoxide Cross-Linking Efficiencies At The 5'-Gnc Sste, Gregory A. Sawyer

Honors Theses

Diepoxybutane, diepoxyoctane, and mechlorethamine are cytotoxic DNA crosslinking agents that vary in their carcinogenic versus chemotherapeutic potentials. Interstrand cross-linking occurs between the N7 positions of deoxyguanosine residues on opposite strands of the DNA duplex. Each synthetic DNA oligomer used in this study contained four 5'-N\GN2CN3 sites (within a 32 base sequence) and we have systematically varied the bases in the N1 and N2 positions to determine the resulting cross-linking efficiencies of each cytotoxic agent. Each duplex was 5' -end labeled and incubated with cross-linking agent. Interstrand cross-links were purified through denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and then subjected to piperidine cleavage. …

End Of Course Testing In Georgia High Schools, Miriam Lang Jan 2003

End Of Course Testing In Georgia High Schools, Miriam Lang

Perspectives In Learning

The requirement for end-of-course testing to replace Georgia's current high school graduation test surfaced on January 30, 1999, when Representatives Porter, Jamieson, Taylor, Ashe, and O'Neal co-sponsored House Bill 308. This bill amended the Quality Basic Education Act to require that secondary school students pass end-of-course tests in order to receive credit for Algebra I, American and Georgia Government, American history, American literature, Biology I, Chemistry I, Geometry, and Writing and Composition. According to this bill, the "State Board of Education no later than July 1, 2000, would be required to adopt end-of-course assessment instruments ... and shall establish a …

Occurrence Of Ovotestes And Plasma Vitellogenin In Feral Male Fathead Minnows From Lagoons Of Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities In Central Iowa, Robert B. Bringolf, Robert C. Summerfelt Jan 2003

Occurrence Of Ovotestes And Plasma Vitellogenin In Feral Male Fathead Minnows From Lagoons Of Municipal Wastewater Treatment Facilities In Central Iowa, Robert B. Bringolf, Robert C. Summerfelt

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Since the early 1990s, endocrine disrupting compounds have been recognized as an important environmental threat. Male fish exposed to effluent from large, metropolitan municipal wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs) have developed reproductive abnormalities including ovotestes and elevated levels of plasma vitellogenin (Vtg), a plasma protein typically produced by egg-laying females. In the summer of 2000, gonads and plasma Vtg concentrations were examined in feral male fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) collected from lagoons of 11 small, rural municipal WWTFs and a reference site (a national wildlife refuge) in Iowa. Fathead minnows were captured in traps from five of the 33 lagoons (three …

Cathodoluminescence As A Means For Distinguishing Hydrothermal From Pre-Hydrothermal Quartz In Sulfide-Bearing Mineral Deposits On The Northern Fringe Of The Upper Mississippi Valley Zinc-Lead District, Ne Iowa And Sw Wisconsin, Paul L. Garvin Jan 2003

Garvin

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Sulfide-bearing mineral deposits, located on the northern fringe of the Upper Mississippi Valley Zinc-Lead District, are contained in early Ordovician carbonate rocks that are extensively silicified and dolomitized. Some silica and dolomite appear to be products of the hydrothermal processes that also formed fracture-filling and cavity-lining sulfides and other cogenetic minerals; other silica and dolomite appear to result from low-temperature, pre-hydrothermal regional diagenesis. Distinguishing hydrothermal quartz (jasperoid) from pre-hydrothermal quartz (chert) solely by hand specimen and thin section petrography is difficult because these two types of mineralization are often intimately associated with each other. Polished slabs from several of these …

Salt Tolerance Of Sunflower And Lettuce In Cultivated And Uncultivated Grass Soil, Steven H. Emerman, Emily M. Kinsinger Jan 2003

Salt Tolerance Of Sunflower And Lettuce In Cultivated And Uncultivated Grass Soil, Steven H. Emerman, Emily M. Kinsinger

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

We tested two hypotheses: 1) whether a vegetable crop will show greater growth under a given salinity treatment in an uncultivated grass soil than a cultivated soil and 2), if so, whether the greater growth is due to the occasional presence of relatively fresh water in macropores or the interaction between salinity and hypoxia in a soil without significant macropores. A previous study suggested uptake from. macropores was significant only for crops with high root water potential (Emerman and Dawson 1997). Hence, in this study, 21 miniature crops were grown in a greenhouse, and the ratio of root dry weight …

A Key To The Eggs And Nests Of Iowa Turtles, James L. Christiansen, Jeffrey R. Parmelee Jan 2003

A Key To The Eggs And Nests Of Iowa Turtles, James L. Christiansen, Jeffrey R. Parmelee

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Biologists often need to identify destroyed turtle nests where a predator has excavated and eaten the eggs. We present a dichotomous key to the eggs and nests of Iowa's turtles based on egg or nest morphology and known range of the species. Egg and nest morphology clearly separated most nests of the families Chelydridae and Kinosternidae and many of the Emydidae. However, egg morphology must be combined with known range to distinguish wood turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) from other emydids. These factors will also separate most false map turtles (Graptemys pseudogeographica) from other species. Similarities among egg morphologies, nest morphologies, and …

Submersed Aquatic Vegetation Trends In Impounded And Backwater Habitat Types Of Pool 13, Upper Mississippi River System: 1994-2000, Theresa A. Blackburn, Daniel J. Kirby Jan 2003

Submersed Aquatic Vegetation Trends In Impounded And Backwater Habitat Types Of Pool 13, Upper Mississippi River System: 1994-2000, Theresa A. Blackburn, Daniel J. Kirby

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) was sampled from 1994-2000 at fixed sires along established transects in Pool 13 of the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS), as part of the Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP). These data were used to quantify the annual percent frequency of occurrence and mean relative density of SAV within three backwaters (Brown's Lake, Savanna Bay, and Spring Lake) and the impounded area of Pool 13. This investigation used Spearman rank correlation to assess the strength of bivariate relationships between measurements of SAV abundance and biological, physical, and hydrological variables at fixed water quality monitoring sites within …

Estimating Estuarine Pollutant Loading From Atmospheric Deposition Using Casco Bay, Maine As A Case Study, Casco Bay Air Deposition Study Team, Catherine Richardson, Douglas Saball, Andy Johnson, David Wright, Diane Gould, Alan Vanarsdale, Jeri Weiss, Beverly Bayley Smith, Ellen Doering Jan 2003

Estimating Estuarine Pollutant Loading From Atmospheric Deposition Using Casco Bay, Maine As A Case Study, Casco Bay Air Deposition Study Team, Catherine Richardson, Douglas Saball, Andy Johnson, David Wright, Diane Gould, Alan Vanarsdale, Jeri Weiss, Beverly Bayley Smith, Ellen Doering

Publications

This paper provides a simple method for estimating the annual rate of direct atmospheric deposition of pollutants to an estuary when little or no local monitoring data is available. The approach we describe uses relevant regional data as well as literature values. The Casco Bay Estuary, located in the southwestern Maine, is used as a case study. The paper also includes the results of a field air deposition monitoring program conducted in Casco Bay (1998 - 2000) and favorably compares the estimates developed for rate of deposition of nitrogen, mercury and PAHs to the field monitoring results. The estimation approach …

Public School Assignment Methods After Grutter And Gratz: The View From San Francisco, David I. Levine Jan 2003

Public School Assignment Methods After Grutter And Gratz: The View From San Francisco, David I. Levine

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This Article first discusses the potential impact of Grutter and Gratz on student assignment plans in public elementary and secondary schools. Professor Levine concludes that public school officials who desire to use race in making student assignment decisions probably will be able to articulate a compelling governmental interest under Gruter. However, under Gratz, they will have significant difficulty in meeting the narrow tailoring prong of strict scrutiny analysis if they seek to use race as an express, mechanical means of selecting and assigning students. Because school districts will search for race-neutral assignment plans as they attempt to comply with both …
