A Christian Perspective On Mathematics – History Of Mathematics And Study Guides, Johan Deklerk Jan 2003

A Christian Perspective On Mathematics – History Of Mathematics And Study Guides, Johan Deklerk

ACMS Journal 2004

This paper addresses two questions: (1) Will a study of the history of the subject serve any purpose in promoting a Christian perspective on mathematics? (2) Can the "science in context" approach be of further help in promoting such a perspective? The author answers both positively and provides specific examples of how he has done this in his own classes.

Creationism – A Viable Philosophy Of Mathematics, Jonathan Zderad Jan 2003

Creationism – A Viable Philosophy Of Mathematics, Jonathan Zderad

ACMS Journal 2004

In this paper, the author addresses two classical questions of the philosophy of mathematics: What, if any, of mathematics exists in the objective sense? How do humans know that our knowledge of mathematics is correct? He argues that the Christian doctrine of God as creator provides a basis for answering these questions. He also provides a critique of eight widely discussed philosophies of mathematics.

History Of Food Acceptance Research In The Us Army, Herbert L. Meiselman, Howard G. Schutz Jan 2003

History Of Food Acceptance Research In The Us Army, Herbert L. Meiselman, Howard G. Schutz

United States Army: Publications

The history of food acceptance research by the US Army in Chicago and Natick is reviewed. The review covers the staff of the two research centers, the research programs, and the significant accomplishments of the Army laboratories from the 1940s to the present. Accomplishments begin with the development of the nine-point hedonic scale, and the development of the first Food Acceptance Laboratory. Further accomplishments include studies of sensory psychophysics, food preferences, food choice and food intake. The laboratories designed methods and conducted research on the role of consumer variables in the acceptance of food products and food service systems. Recent …

Rodent Sperm Analysis In Field-Based Ecological Risk Assessment: Pilot Study At Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant, Ravenna, Ohio, Lawrence V. Tannenbaum, Matthew Bazar, Melanie S. Hawkins, Barney W. Cornaby, Elizabeth A. Ferguson, L. Chantelle Carroll, Patrick F. Ryan

United States Army: Publications

Ecological risk assessment (ERA) guidance recommends that field-truthing efforts proceed when modeled hazard quotients (HQs) suggest that toxicological effects are occurring to site receptors. To date, no field methods have been proposed by the regulatory community that can lead to definitive determinations of acceptable or unacceptable risk for birds and mammals, the two terrestrial classes of receptors that are commonly assessed using the HQ method. This paper describes rodent sperm analysis (RSA) as a viable method to be applied in the field at sites with historical contamination. RSA is capable of detecting biological differences that bear on reproduction, a highly …

Retrieval Of Subpixel Snow-Covered Area And Grain Size From Imaging Spectrometer Data, Thomas H. Painter, Jeff Dozier, Dar A. Roberts, Robert E. Davis, Robert O. Green Jan 2003

Retrieval Of Subpixel Snow-Covered Area And Grain Size From Imaging Spectrometer Data, Thomas H. Painter, Jeff Dozier, Dar A. Roberts, Robert E. Davis, Robert O. Green

United States Army: Publications

We describe and validate an automated model that retrieves subpixel snow-covered area and effective grain size from Airborne Visible/ Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) data. The model analyzes multiple endmember spectral mixtures with a spectral library of snow, vegetation, rock, and soil. We derive snow spectral endmembers of varying grain size from a radiative transfer model; spectra for vegetation, rock, and soil were collected in the field and laboratory. For three AVIRIS images of Mammoth Mountain, California that span common snow conditions for winter through spring, we validate the estimates of snow-covered area with fine-resolution aerial photographs and validate the estimates …

Abandoned Mine Waste Repositories: Site Selction, Design, And Cost, K. L. Ford, M. Walker Jan 2003

Abandoned Mine Waste Repositories: Site Selction, Design, And Cost, K. L. Ford, M. Walker

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is conducting priority cleanups of abandoned mine sites on public lands. Typically, these sites contain tailings piles, cyanide heaps, and rock dumps that historically were constructed in or near drainages and now are releasing pollutants into watersheds. In compliance with regulations, BLM selects the most environmentally suitable site for removing mining waste and placing it into repositories. Repositories have different design features, and the design selected should be based on site-specific conditions and the results of water balance models. A Geographic Information System (GIS) can be a useful tool for screening and selecting a …

Aerial Surveys Of Cliff-Nesting Raptors, Robert J. Ritche, Ann M. Wildman, David A. Yokel Jan 2003

Aerial Surveys Of Cliff-Nesting Raptors, Robert J. Ritche, Ann M. Wildman, David A. Yokel

United States Bureau of Land Management: Staff Publications

In summer 1999, an extensive aerial survey of cliff-nesting raptors was conducted in the National Petroleum Reserve–Alaska (NPR–A) on Alaska’s North Slope. No similarly extensive survey had been conducted since 1977. In the interim, the regional population of the Arctic peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus tundrius) had increased, as shown by monitoring along the Colville River. The 1999 survey assessed the present abundance and distribution of the peregrine falcon, as well as the gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus), golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), and rough-legged hawk (Buteo lagopus) in most of the NPR–A. Specifically excluded from …

On Abel-Gontscharoff-Gould's Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue Jan 2003

On Abel-Gontscharoff-Gould's Polynomials, Tian-Xiao He, Leetsch Hsu, Peter Shiue

Scholarship

In this paper a connective study of Gould’s annihilation coefficients and Abel-Gontscharoff polynomials is presented. It is shown that Gould’s annihilation coefficients and Abel-Gontscharoff polynomials are actually equivalent to each other under certain linear substitutions for the variables. Moreover, a pair of related expansion formulas involving Gontscharoff’s remainder and a new form of it are demonstrated, and also illustrated with several examples.

Southeastern U.S. Vegetation Response To Enso Events (1989–1999), Albert J. Peters, Lei Ji, Elizabeth A. Walter-Shea

Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies: Publications

El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is considered one of the most powerful forces driving anomalous global weather patterns. Large-scale seasonal precipitation and temperature changes influenced by ENSO have been examined in many areas of the world. The southeastern United States is one of the regions affected by ENSO events. In this study, remote sensing detection of vegetation response to ENSO phases is demonstrated with one-kilometer biweekly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data (1989–1999) derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). The impacts of three ENSO phases, cold, warm and neutral, on vegetation were analyzed with a focus on two …

Sociology, Robert C. Bannister Jan 2003

Sociology, Robert C. Bannister

History Faculty Works

Sociology emerged in response to the problem of social order in modern society in the wake of the American and French Revolutions and the rise of industrialism and market capitalism. Sociology had its roots in the theories of August Comte and Herbert Spencer and in empirical work previously conducted by census bureaus, state labor boards, and reform organizations. By the 1880s, sociologists had perceived a threat in the alliance with biology: It undercut the need for a separate discipline and, in Spencer's laissez-faire version, tainted the discipline among social reformers and other constituencies crucial to its success. In Dynamic Sociology, …

Action Education In Land Use Decisions: Student Views On Urbanization And Farmland Loss, Mindi Schneider, Charles A. Francis, Dick Esseks Jan 2003

Action Education In Land Use Decisions: Student Views On Urbanization And Farmland Loss, Mindi Schneider, Charles A. Francis, Dick Esseks

CARI Extension and Education Materials for Sustainable Agriculture

Loss of prime farmland is a serious concern in the United States and around the globe. With rapid urban population increases, the activities and perceived needs of concentrated groups of people result in the swallowing of some of the most fertile lands in this country. Today we have just under 2 acres of productive farmland per person in the United States. Given the current population growth rate due to births and immigration, plus the present rate of farmland loss, World Watch Institute estimates that we will have about 0.6 acres or one-third as much farmland available per person by 2055--a …

Measuring The Prompt Atmospheric Neutrino Flux With Down-Going Muons In Neutrino Telescopes, Graciela Gelmini, Paolo Gondolo, Gabriele Varieschi Jan 2003

Measuring The Prompt Atmospheric Neutrino Flux With Down-Going Muons In Neutrino Telescopes, Graciela Gelmini, Paolo Gondolo, Gabriele Varieschi

Physics Faculty Works

In the TeV energy region and above, the uncertainty in the level of prompt atmospheric neutrinos would limit the search for diffuse astrophysical neutrinos. We suggest that neutrino telescopes may provide an empirical determination of the flux of prompt atmospheric electron and muon neutrinos by measuring the flux of prompt down-going muons. Our suggestion is based on the consideration that prompt neutrino and prompt muon fluxes at sea level are almost identical.

An Exact Solution For The Dispersive Alfven Switch-On Shock, Robert L. Hamilton, C C. Wu Jan 2003

An Exact Solution For The Dispersive Alfven Switch-On Shock, Robert L. Hamilton, C C. Wu

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

An exact solution for the dispersive Alfven switch-on shock is found in the case of weak nonlinearity, weak dispersion, and weak damping. Two singular and apparently nonphysical solutions are found as well. The switch-on shock solution is shown to reduce, in the appropriate limits, to two documented special cases of the shock: one case being a description of the planar shock without dispersion and the other being an asymptotic description of the circularly polarized wave standing upstream from the shock in the dispersive case. The solution developed here provides the complete shock structure for either case. This exact solution may …

Perturbation Of Global Solution Curves For Semilinear Problems, Philip Korman, Yi Li, Tiancheng Ouyang Jan 2003

Perturbation Of Global Solution Curves For Semilinear Problems, Philip Korman, Yi Li, Tiancheng Ouyang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We revisit the question of exact multiplicity of positive solutions for a class of Dirichlet problems for cubic-like nonlinearities, which we studied in 161. Instead of computing the direction of bifurcation as we did in [6], we use an indirect approach, and study the evolution of turning points. We give conditions under which the critical (turning) points continue on smooth curves, which allows us to reduce the problem to the easier case of f (0) = 0. We show that the smallest root of f (u) does not have to be restricted.

Comparison Of The Theoretical And Experimental Band Structure Of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Crystal, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, J.R. Hardy, Stephen Ducharme, Jaewu Choi, Peter A. Dowben Jan 2003

Comparison Of The Theoretical And Experimental Band Structure Of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) Crystal, Chun-Gang Duan, Wai-Ning Mei, J.R. Hardy, Stephen Ducharme, Jaewu Choi, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

The electronic structure and band symmetries of the ferroelectric phase of poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) are studied by using the first-principles density-functional method. Our calculated results agree well with the angle-resolved photoemission experiments. We find that the PVDF crystal has an energy gap of about 6 eV at the Γ-point. Large dispersion of the valence band is found only along the chain direction, which is consistent with the quasi-one-dimensional nature of PVDF. In particular, the band symmetries of the valence states deduced theoretically are in good agreement with experiment. Finally, further investigations on the electronic structure of poly(trifluoroethylene) (PTrFE) reveal …

Monte Carlo Assessments Of Goodness-Of-Fit For Ecological Simulation Models, Lance A. Waller, David Smith, James E. Childs, Leslie A. Real Jan 2003

Monte Carlo Assessments Of Goodness-Of-Fit For Ecological Simulation Models, Lance A. Waller, David Smith, James E. Childs, Leslie A. Real

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

One often develops stochastic ecologic simulation models based on local interactions between individuals or groups and bases systemic conclusions on trends summarized over multiple data sets generated from the model. In many cases, such models generate data sets (“realizations”) each violating the usual assumptions associated with traditional statistical tests of goodness-of-fit, most notably that of independent observations. Monte Carlo hypothesis tests applied to multiple realizations from such models provide appropriate goodness-of-fit tests regardless of within-model peculiarities. The Monte Carlo tests address the question “Do the observed data appear consistent with the model?” in contrast to the usual question “Does the …

Quantitative Soil Descriptions For Ecoregions Of The United States, Mostafa A. Shirazi, Colleen Burch Johnson, James M. Omernik, Denis White, Patricia K. Haggerty, Glenn E. Griffith Jan 2003

Quantitative Soil Descriptions For Ecoregions Of The United States, Mostafa A. Shirazi, Colleen Burch Johnson, James M. Omernik, Denis White, Patricia K. Haggerty, Glenn E. Griffith

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Researchers have defined and mapped ecological regions of the United States based on similar patterns of ecosystems such as deserts, forests, and croplands. These studies are useful in regional research, monitoring, and environmental management because data can be more readily extrapolated within the same ecoregion and to regions with similar characteristics. The description of ecoregions is largely holistic and qualitative. Conversely, quantitative information for soil are abundant and soil is an important ecosystem component related to many ecoregion properties. We used the nationwide State Soil Geographic database(STATSGO) to describe the soils of 84 Level III ecoregions in the United States. …

Late Twentieth Century Northern Hemisphere Sea-Ice Record From U.S. National Ice Center Ice Charts, Kim Partington, Tom Flynn, Doug Lamb, Cheryl Bertoia, Kyle Dedrick Jan 2003

Late Twentieth Century Northern Hemisphere Sea-Ice Record From U.S. National Ice Center Ice Charts, Kim Partington, Tom Flynn, Doug Lamb, Cheryl Bertoia, Kyle Dedrick

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Arctic sea ice plays a key role in the climate system, by acting as the interface between a warm ocean and a cold atmosphere. Establishing the true pattern of recent behavior of the sea ice in this region is critical to simulating the role of sea ice in future climate. Recently released operational ice charts from the U.S. National Ice Center provide insight into the late twentieth century behavior of Northern Hemisphere sea ice, providing more reliable ice concentrations during summer and freeze-up than those available from the passive microwave record. The major winter and summer modes of ice concentration …

Segregation Of Migration By Feeding Ground Origin In North Atlantic Humpback Whales (Megaptera Novaeangliae), Peter T. Stevick, Judith Allen, Martine Berube, Phillip J. Clapham, Steven K. Katona, Finn Larsen, Jon Lien, David K. Mattila, Per J. Palsbøll, Jooke Robbins, Johann Sigurjonsson, Tim D. Smith, Nils Øien, Philip S. Hammond

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Results from a large-scale, capture–recapture study of humpback whales Megaptera novaeangliae in the North Atlantic show that migration timing is influenced by feeding ground origin. No significant differences were observed in the number of individuals from any feeding area that were re-sighted in the common breeding area in the West Indies. However, there was a relationship between the proportion (logit transformed) of West Indies sightings and longitude (r2 = 0.97, F1,3 = 98.27, P = 0.0022) suggesting that individuals feeding farther to the east are less likely to winter in the West Indies. A relationship was also detected …

Field Experiments Show That Acoustic Pingers Reduce Marine Mammal Bycatch In The California Drift Gill Net Fishery, Jay Barlow, Grant A. Cameron Jan 2003

Field Experiments Show That Acoustic Pingers Reduce Marine Mammal Bycatch In The California Drift Gill Net Fishery, Jay Barlow, Grant A. Cameron

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

A controlled experiment was carried out in 19961997 to determine whether acoustic deterrent devices (pingers) reduce marine mammal bycatch in the California drift gill net fishery for swordfish and sharks. Using Fisher’s exact test, bycatch rates with pingers were significantly less for all cetacean species combined (P < 0.001) and for all pinniped species combined (P = 0.003). For species tested separately with this test, bycatch reduction was statistically significant for shortbeaked common dolphins (P = 0.001) and California sea lions (P = 0.02). Bycatch reduction is not statistically significant for the other species tested separately, but sample sizes and statistical power were low, and bycatch rates were lower in pingered nets for six of the eight other cetacean and pinniped species. A log-linear model relating the mean rate of entanglement to the number of pingers deployed was fit to the data for three groups: short-beaked common dolphins, other cetaceans, and pinnipeds. For a net with 40 pingers, the models predict approximately a 12- fold decrease in entanglement for short-beaked common dolphins, a 4-fold decrease for other cetaceans, and a 3-fold decrease for pinnipeds. No other variables were found that could explain this effect. The pinger experiment ended when regulations were enacted to make pingers mandatory in this fishery.

Acoustic Identification Of Nine Delphinid Species In The Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean, Julie N. Oswald, Jay Barlow, Thomas F. Norris Jan 2003

Acoustic Identification Of Nine Delphinid Species In The Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean, Julie N. Oswald, Jay Barlow, Thomas F. Norris

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Acoustic methods may improve the ability to identify cetacean species during shipboard surveys. Whistles were recorded from nine odontocete species in the eastern tropical Pacific to determine how reliably these vocalizations can be classified to species based on simple spectrographic measurements. Twelve variables were measured from each whistle (n = 908). Parametric multivariate discriminant function analysis (DFA) correctly classified 41 .l% of whistles to species. Non-parametric classification and regression tree (CART) analysis resulted in 5 1.4% correct classification. Striped dolphin whistles were most difficult to classify. Whistles of bottlenose dolphins, false killer whales, and pilot whales were most distinctive. …

Mid-Holocene Climates Of The Americas: A Dynamical Response To Changed Seasonality, S. P. Harrison, J. E. Kutzbach, Z. Liu, P. J. Bartlein, B. Otto-Bliesner, Daniel R. Muhs, I. C. Prentice, R. S. Thompson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Abstract Simulations of the climatic response to mid- Holocene (6 ka BP) orbital forcing with two coupled ocean–atmosphere models (FOAM and CSM) show enhancement of monsoonal precipitation in parts of the American Southwest, Central America and northernmost South America during Northern Hemisphere summer. The enhanced onshore flow that brings precipitation into Central America is caused by a northward displacement of the inter-tropical convergence zone, driven by cooling of the equatorial and warming of the northern subtropical and mid-latitude ocean. Ocean feedbacks also enhance precipitation over the American Southwest, although the increase in monsoon precipitation there is largely driven by increases …

Monitoring Trends In Bat Populations Of The United States And Territories: Problems And Prospects, T.J. O'Shea, M. A. Bogan Jan 2003

Monitoring Trends In Bat Populations Of The United States And Territories: Problems And Prospects, T.J. O'Shea, M. A. Bogan

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Bats are ecologically and economically important mammals. The life histories of bats (particularly their low reproductive rates and the need for some species to gather in large aggregations at limited numbers of roosting sites) make their populations vulnerable to declines. Many of the species of bats in the United States (U.S.) and territories are categorized as endangered or threatened, have been candidates for such categories, or are considered species of concern. The importance and vulnerability of bat populations makes monitoring trends in their populations a goal for their future management. However, scientifically rigorous monitoring of bat populations requires well-planned, statistically …

Geologic Studies Of Mercury By The U.S. Geological Survey Jan 2003

Geologic Studies Of Mercury By The U.S. Geological Survey

United States Geological Survey: Publications

A liquid at room temperature, mercury is a unique metal with unusual properties. Elemental mercury has long been used in thermometers because it responds to changes in temperature. In fact, mercury’s many diverse properties have made it useful for many products. Mercury is a good metallic conductor with a low electrical resistivity; it has been used in electrical products including electrical wiring and switches, fluorescent lamps, mercury batteries, and thermostats (Eisler, 1987). Mercury also is used in navigational instruments to measure changes in temperature and pressure. In the medical field, mercury is used as a component in dental fillings and …
