Teacher Use Of High-Stakes Test Score Data To Improve Instruction, James H. Mcmillan, Susan P. Mckelvey Jan 2003

Teacher Use Of High-Stakes Test Score Data To Improve Instruction, James H. Mcmillan, Susan P. Mckelvey

MERC Publications

Across the United States most school districts and state departments of education have embraced high-stakes testing for their public schools and students. This has led to widespread school reform since many students have not reached the standards that the states and/or districts have set. Teachers increasingly focus on making sure that their students have enough knowledge to pass these tests, and some states and districts have made passing scores a requirement for graduation. Many states and districts have invested considerable time aligning their standardized tests with the objectives of the curriculum.

One of the consequences of high-stakes testing is that …

Atomic Structure, Binding Energy, And Magnetic Properties Of Iron Atoms Supported On A Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon, L. Senapati, S. K. Nayak, B. K. Rao, P. Jena Jan 2003

Atomic Structure, Binding Energy, And Magnetic Properties Of Iron Atoms Supported On A Polyaromatic Hydrocarbon, L. Senapati, S. K. Nayak, B. K. Rao, P. Jena

Physics Publications

The atomic structure, energetics, and properties of gas-phase cluster complexes containing coronene (C24H12) molecule and up to two iron atoms are studied for the first time using density functional theory and generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation. The geometries of the neutral and cationic iron–coronene complexes are optimized without symmetry constraint and by examining the possibility that iron atoms could occupy various sites via individual π or bridging interactions. In both neutral and cationic complexes a single Fe atom is found to preferentially occupy the on-top site above the outer ring, while two Fe atoms dimerize and reside on …

Nitrogen-Induced Magnetic Transition In Small Chromium Clusters, Q. Wang, Q. Sun, B. K. Rao, P. Jena, Y. Kawazoe Jan 2003

Nitrogen-Induced Magnetic Transition In Small Chromium Clusters, Q. Wang, Q. Sun, B. K. Rao, P. Jena, Y. Kawazoe

Physics Publications

Using density functional theory with generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation, we show that otherwise antiferromagnetically coupled chromium atoms in very small chromium clusters couple ferromagnetically when doped with a nitrogen atom, thus leading to giant magnetic moments. For example, the magnetic moment of Cr2N is found to be 9μBwhile that of Cr2 is 0μB. Strong bonding between Cr and N atoms brings about this magnetic transition. The Cr atoms nearest neighbor to N couple ferromagnetically with each other and antiferromagnetically with nitrogen. The significance of these results in understanding the ferromagnetic order in Cr-doped GaN is discussed.

A Simulation Model To Characterize Photolithography Process Of A Semiconductor Wafer Fabrication, Amr Arisha, Paul Young, Mohie El Baradie Jan 2003

A Simulation Model To Characterize Photolithography Process Of A Semiconductor Wafer Fabrication, Amr Arisha, Paul Young, Mohie El Baradie

Conference papers

The pressures on semiconductor manufacturers due to cost considerations, rapid growth of process technology, quality constraints, feature size reduction, and increasingly complex devices are increasing requiring ever higher efficiency from the manufacturing facilities. The complexity of manufacturing high capacity semiconductor devices means that it is impossible to analyze the process control parameters and the production configurations using traditional analytical models. There is, therefore, an increasing need for effective models of each manufacturing process, characterising and analyzing the process in detail, allowing the effect of changes in the production environment on the process to be predicted. The photolithography process is one …

Software Requirements Specification Of A University Class Scheduler, Sergiu M. Dascalu, Fredrick C. Harris Jr., Deanna Needell, Jeff A. Stuart, Tamara C. Thiel

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

The University Class Scheduler (UCS) presented in this paper is a novel scheduling tool intended to be used by universities to schedule classes into classrooms. In essence, UCS allows university administrators to enter relevant college and building information, schedule the input classes (courses) into input classrooms, and create web pages that provide detailed schedule information on a semester-by-semester basis. The UCS, which performs the scheduling of classes according to a number of user-selected parameters, can be easily adapted for applications outside the academic realm. This paper presents the main aspects of the University Class Scheduler’s UML-based specification, gives details of …

A Mathematical Model Of Immune Response To Tumor Invasion, Lisette De Pillis, Ami Radunskaya

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Recent experimental studies by Diefenbach et al. [1] have brought to light new information about how the immune system of the mouse responds to the presence of a tumor. In the Diefenbach studies, tumor cells are modified to express higher levels of immune stimulating NKG2D ligands. Experimental results show that sufficiently high levels of ligand expression create a significant barrier to tumor establishment in the mouse. Additionally, ligand transduced tumor cells stimulate protective immunity to tumor rechallenge. Based on the results of the Diefenbach experiments, we have developed a mathematical model of tumor growth to address some of the questions …

Vertex-Magic Labeling Of Trees And Forests, I. D. Gray, J. Macdougall, John P. Mcsorley, Walter D. Wallis Jan 2003

Vertex-Magic Labeling Of Trees And Forests, I. D. Gray, J. Macdougall, John P. Mcsorley, Walter D. Wallis

Articles and Preprints

A vertex-magic total labeling of a graph G(V,E) is a one-to-one map λ from E ∪ V onto the integers {1, 2, . . . , |E| + |V|} such that

λ(x) + Σ λ(xy) where the sum is over all vertices y adjacent to x, is a constant, independent of the choice of vertex x. In this paper we examine the existence of vertex-magic total labelings of trees and forests. The situation is quite different from the conjectured behavior of edge-magic total labelings …

The Two Isoforms Of Rat Metallothionein Are Coordinately Regulated In Vivo, Diane M. Todd Jan 2003

The Two Isoforms Of Rat Metallothionein Are Coordinately Regulated In Vivo, Diane M. Todd

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Metallothionein (MT) is an inducible protein whose unique structure contributes to its many functions. One of MT’s functions is the detoxification of heavy metals. Cadmium (Cd), which is an environmental pollutant and a hazard to both humans and animals, is detoxified by MT. There are four known MT isoforms (MT I-IV) and this study focuses on only MT I and MT II. Even though a lot is known about the effect of Cd on MT induction little has been reported about the MT isoforms and their pattern of mRNA expression. It is the aim of this study to investigate the …

Inverted Velocity Profile In The Cylindrical Couette Flow Of A Rarefied Gas, Alejandro Garcia, K. Aoki, H. Yoshida, T. Nakanishi

Faculty Publications

The cylindrical Couette flow of a rarefied gas is investigated, under the diffuse-specular reflection condition of Maxwell’s type on the cylinders, in the case where the inner cylinder is rotating whereas the outer cylinder is at rest. The inverted velocity profile for small accommodation coefficients, pointed out by Tibbs, Baras, and Garcia [Phys. Rev. E 56, 2282 (1997)] on the basis of a Monte Carlo simulation, is investigated extensively by means of a systematic asymptotic analysis for small Knudsen numbers as well as the direct numerical analysis of the Boltzmann equation, and the parameter range in which the phenomenon appears …
