Transformation: The Human Obstacles, Jens G. Pohl Jun 2003

Transformation: The Human Obstacles, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This paper addresses the human aspects of change at a time when the rapid wide-spread implementation of a new infostructure has become the cornerstone of national security policies. The author explores the behavioral characteristics of human beings from a point of view that is not based on inter-human comparisons, but on an examination of the innate physical, biological, intellectual, emotional, and social characteristics of our species. It is argued that the experience-based nature of the human cognitive system greatly reduces our ability to adapt to changes in our environment, exploit opportunities, and create new knowledge. A fundamental biological survival instinct …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report on single-dish monitoring and extremely high angular resolution observations of the flaring H2O megamaser in the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 348. The H2O line is redshifted by ~130 km s-1 with respect to the systemic velocity, is very broad, with an FWHM of 130 km s-1, and has no detectable high-velocity components within 1500 km s-1 on either side of the strong line. Monitoring observations made with the Effelsberg 100 m telescope show that the maser varies significantly on timescales as short as 1 day and that the integrated line …

Reasoning About Context-Awareness In The Presence Of Mobility, Christine Julien, Jamie Payton, Gruia-Catalin Roman Jun 2003

Reasoning About Context-Awareness In The Presence Of Mobility, Christine Julien, Jamie Payton, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Context-awareness is emerging as an important computing paradigm designed to address the special needs of applications that must accommodate or exploit the highly dynamic environments that occur in the presence of physical or logical mobility. A number of formal models are available for reasoning about concurrency. Models designed to capture the specifics of mobility are fewer but still well represented (e.g., Mobile Ambients, π-Calculus, and Mobile UNITY). These models do not, however, provide constructs necessary for explicit modeling of context-aware interactions. This paper builds upon earlier efforts on state-based formal reasoning about mobility and explores the process by which a …

Radiative Decays Involving A0(980) And F0(980) In The Vector Meson Dominance Model, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Masayasu Harada Jun 2003

Radiative Decays Involving A0(980) And F0(980) In The Vector Meson Dominance Model, Joseph Schechter, Deirdre Black, Masayasu Harada

Physics - All Scholarship

We summarize some features of the vector meson dominance model which was recently proposed for studying radiative decays involving the scalar mesons. Using the experimental values of \Gamma(a_0 \to \gamma\gamma), \Gamma(f_0 \to \gamma\gamma) and \Gamma(\phi \to a_0 \gamma) as inputs, we show that the model predicts a large hierarchy between \Gamma(a_0 \to \omega \gamma) and \Gamma(a_0 \to \rho \gamma) as well as between \Gamma(f_0 \to \omega \gamma) and \Gamma(f_0 \to \rho \gamma).

Search For Associated Production Of Υand Vector Boson In Pp̅ Collisions At √S =1.8 Tev, Darin Acosta, Kenneth A. Bloom, Collider Detector At Fermilab Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We present a search for associated production of the Υ (1S) and a vector boson in 83 pb-1 of pp̅ collisions at √s =1.8 TeV collected by the CDF experiment in 1994–1995. We find no evidence of the searched signal in the data, and set upper limits to the production cross sections.

Dartmouth Scholarship

The rapid localization of GRB 021004 by the HETE-2 satellite allowed nearly continuous monitoring of its early optical afterglow decay, as well as high-quality optical spectra that determined a redshift of z3 = 2.328 for its host galaxy, an active starburst galaxy with strong Ly emission and several absorption lines. Spectral observations show multiple absorbers at z3A = 2.323, z3B= 2.317, and z3C = 2.293 blueshifted by ~450, ~990, and ~3155 km s-1, respectively, relative to the host galaxy Lyα emission. We argue that these correspond to a fragmented shell nebula that has …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

In laboratory experiments using the engineering spare microcalorimeter detector from the ASTRO-E satellite mission, we recorded the x-ray emission of highly charged ions of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, which simulates charge exchange reactions between heavy ions in the solar wind and neutral gases in cometary comae. the spectra are complex and do not readily match predictions. We developed a charge exchange emission model that successfully reproduces the soft x-ray spectrum of comet Linear C/1999 S4, observed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory.

A Self-Adapting Healthcare Information Infrastructure Using Mobile Computing Devices, James K. Archibald, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey Jun 2003

A Self-Adapting Healthcare Information Infrastructure Using Mobile Computing Devices, James K. Archibald, Eric S. Hall, Charles D. Knutson, David K. Vawdrey

Faculty Publications

Despite recent improvements in the gathering and sharing of patient medical information among healthcare providers, there remains a gap in the electronic medical record infrastructure. Patient data is not available in some situations, either because the infrastructure is inaccessible (as in a natural disaster) or because there is no way to link the patient to the infrastructure (e.g., the patient cannot supply necessary identification information). This paper describes the Poket Doktor System, an architecture that allows an individual to carry personal electronic medical information on a wireless handheld device such as a smart card, cell phone, or PDA. Medical workers …

Cluster Stability Scores For Microarray Data In Cancer Studies, Mark Smolkin, Debashis Ghosh Jun 2003

Cluster Stability Scores For Microarray Data In Cancer Studies, Mark Smolkin, Debashis Ghosh

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A potential benefit of profiling of tissue samples using microarrays is the generation of molecular fingerprints that will define subtypes of disease. Hierarchical clustering has been the primary analytical tool used to define disease subtypes from microarray experiments in cancer settings. Assessing cluster reliability poses a major complication in analyzing output from these procedures. While much work has been done on assessing the global question of number of clusters in a dataset, relatively little research exists on assessing stability of individual clusters. A potential benefit of profiling of tissue samples using microarrays is the generation of molecular fingerprints that will …

Discrete-Event Fluid Modeling Of Background Tcp Traffic, David M. Nicol, Guanhua Yan Jun 2003

Discrete-Event Fluid Modeling Of Background Tcp Traffic, David M. Nicol, Guanhua Yan

Computer Science Technical Reports

TCP is the most widely used transport layer protocol used in the internet today. A TCP session adapts the demands it places on the network to observations of bandwidth availability on the network. Because TCP is adaptive, any model of its behavior that aspires to be accurate must be influenced by other network traffic. This point is especially important in the context of using simulation to evaluate some new network algorithm of interest (e.g. reliable multi-cast) in an environment where the background traffic affects---and is affected by---its behavior. We need to generate background traffic efficiently in a way that captures …

Double Robust Estimation In Longitudinal Marginal Structural Models, Zhuo Yu, Mark J. Van Der Laan Jun 2003

Double Robust Estimation In Longitudinal Marginal Structural Models, Zhuo Yu, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Consider estimation of causal parameters in a marginal structural model for the discrete intensity of the treatment specific counting process (e.g. hazard of a treatment specific survival time) based on longitudinal observational data on treatment, covariates and survival. We assume the sequential randomization assumption (SRA) on the treatment assignment mechanism and the so called experimental treatment assignment assumption which is needed to identify the causal parameters from the observed data distribution. Under SRA, the likelihood of the observed data structure factorizes in the auxiliary treatment mechanism and the partial likelihood consisting of the product over time of conditional distributions of …

Robust Pi Controller Design Satisfying Gain And Phase Margin Constraints, Mark L. Nagurka, O. Yaniv Jun 2003

Robust Pi Controller Design Satisfying Gain And Phase Margin Constraints, Mark L. Nagurka, O. Yaniv

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper presents a control design algorithm for determining PI-type controllers satisfying specifications on gain margin, phase margin, and an upper bound on the (complementary) sensitivity for a finite set of plants. Important properties of the algorithm are: (i) it can be applied to plants of any order including plants with delay, unstable plants, and plants given by measured data, (ii) it is efficient and fast, and as such can be used in near real-time to determine controller parameters (for on-line modification of the plant model including its uncertainty and/or the specifications), (iii) it can be used to identify the …
