A Case Of Rifampicin Induced Pseudomembraneous Colitis, Daad H. Akbar, Halia Z. Al-Shehri, Amani M. Al-Huzali, Hind I. Falatah

Saudi Medical Journal

We report a case pf pseudomembranous colitis that developed in a patient with tuberculous abdominal lymphadenopathy during treatment with rifampicin. The patient had delayed presentation (3 months) after the start of rifampicin. She had one relapse after 2 months that was successfully treated, and she finished her antituberculosis therapy without any further relapses. Awareness of this serious complication of rifampicin therapy should be encountered.

Saudi Medical Journal

A perimenopausal patient presented with a history of irregular vaginal bleeding. Clinical examination revealed lower abdominal mass, and the pre operative diagnosis was an ovarian cyst. At laparotomy the ovaries and tubes were normal, and the cyst was anatomically attached to the uterus with a short pedicle. There was no obvious sign of malignancy at laparotomy. The histopathology of the cyst was a benign Mullerian type cyst. Bilateral tubal ligation performed at the same time revealed normal fallopian tubes. The patient was followed up 6 weeks and 6 months later, and she remains symptom free. The unusual anatomical location of …

Legislating Morality: The Duty To The Tax System Reconsidered, Watson Dec 2003

Legislating Morality: The Duty To The Tax System Reconsidered, Watson

Scholarly Works

Four years ago, I presented a paper at a symposium on professionalism jointly sponsored by the University of Kansas Law School and the Kansas Bar Association. That paper espoused the view (contrary to what appears to be the popular view among tax scholars) that tax lawyers owe no special duty to the "tax system" other than to abide by the law and the applicable standards of professional conduct. During the four-year interim since my last visit to Kansas, however, we have witnessed the deleterious effect of the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998 (RRA '98) on IRS enforcement and …

Worksheets That Work For Measuring And Assessing Farm Financial Performance, Freddie L. Barnard, Michael Boehlje

Journal of Extension

An Extension program uses four worksheets to take data from beginning and end-of-year balance sheets, Schedule F, and, if needed, a Form 4797 and prepares an accrual-adjusted income statement. That information is then used to calculate the financial ratios recommended by the Farm Financial Standards Council. The worksheets enable Extension clientele and borrowers to analyze their agricultural businesses and lenders to evaluate loan requests.

Energy Efficient Routing Protocols For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Chansu Yu, Ben Lee, Hee Yong Youn Dec 2003

Energy Efficient Routing Protocols For Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Chansu Yu, Ben Lee, Hee Yong Youn

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Although establishing correct and efficient routes is an important design issue in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), a more challenging goal is to provide energy efficient routes because mobile nodes' operation time is the most critical limiting factor. This article surveys and classifies the energy-aware routing protocols proposed for MANETs. They minimize either the active communication energy required to transmit or receive packets or the inactive energy consumed when a mobile node stays idle but listens to the wireless medium for any possible communication requests from other nodes. Transmission power control approach and load distribution approach belong to the former …

Changing Scientific Evidence, Edward K. Cheng Dec 2003

Changing Scientific Evidence, Edward K. Cheng

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

A number of high-profile toxic tort cases, such as silicone breast implants, have followed a familiar and disturbing path: Early studies suggest a link between a suspected substance and a particular illness. Based on these initial studies, lawsuits are brought and juries award large judgments to various plaintiffs. Then later, more comprehensive studies find no evidence of a causal link. How should the legal system cope with this problem in which new scientific evidence calls into question previous findings of liability? These erroneous judgments seriously harm social welfare and legitimacy. Beneficial products are needlessly discontinued or are made more expensive, …

Rural Finance, Poverty Alleviation, And Sustainable Land Use: The Role Of Credit For The Adoption Of Agroforestry Systems In Occidental Honduras, Ruerd Ruben, Luud Clercx Dec 2003

Rural Finance, Poverty Alleviation, And Sustainable Land Use: The Role Of Credit For The Adoption Of Agroforestry Systems In Occidental Honduras, Ruerd Ruben, Luud Clercx

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This paper analyzes the relationship between financial services provided by different agents, the adoption of agroforestry systems, and the implications for food security and sustainable soil management. Attention is focussed on the role of rural finance in reducing risk and stabilizing household income and yields. We conclude that credit provision performs critical functions for reinforcing the resilience of rural livelihoods in less-favored areas. Rural development programs in the Occidental region of Honduras have been rather reluctant to provide rural financial services. Unfavorable agroclimatic conditions and the scarcity of infrastructure lead to extreme poverty. The local economy is fairly dynamic due …

Uncovering The Storytelling Power Of Communication: Applying Walter Fisher's Narrative Theory To Three Presidential Crisis Speeches, Sharon Dowell Dec 2003

Uncovering The Storytelling Power Of Communication: Applying Walter Fisher's Narrative Theory To Three Presidential Crisis Speeches, Sharon Dowell

Student Work

This study applies Walter Fisher’s narrative theory of communication to a rhetorical analysis of three presidential crisis speeches: President George W. Bush’s speech on September 20, 2001 after the terrorist attacks, President Franklin Roosevelt’s Pearl Harbor speech on December 8, 1941 and President Bill Clinton’s Oklahoma City bombing speech on April 23, 1995. The speeches were analyzed to discover the accuracy of the theory, why the speeches were successful and if they supported the case for a presidential crisis communication genre. Three main conclusions resulted from this rhetorical analysis. First, the theory was verified as accurate because it defined the …

Changes In Student Teachers' Perceptions Of Stress During The Student Teaching Semester, Connie L. Schaffer Dec 2003

Changes In Student Teachers' Perceptions Of Stress During The Student Teaching Semester, Connie L. Schaffer

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in the perceptions of stress during the student teaching semester. The pervasive theory regarding the changing stress of student teachers was developed by Fuller (1969). Fuller's developmental conceptualization theory involved three stages of concern or stress: (1) pre-teaching, non-concerns, (2) early-teaching phase, self-concerns and task concerns, and (3) late concerns, impact concerns. This study examined self-concerns, task concerns, and impact concerns and expanded the Fuller (1969) model to also include personal and career concerns.

Political Implications Of Confucian Familism, Antonio Rappa, Sor-Hoon Tan Dec 2003

Political Implications Of Confucian Familism, Antonio Rappa, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The family could be mobilized as a political resource for economic ‘development’. What kind of family would be compatible with a knowledge-based economy? We argue that authoritarian Confucian familism is incompatible with the knowledge-based economy; but it is possible to construct a different model of the ideal Confucian family which will be compatible with such an economy: a family ideal that emphasizes internal strengths of relationships rather than building barriers to keep out ‘undesirable influences’, that advocates a respect for authority that is authoritative rather than authoritarian.
