A Survey Of The Minkowski ?(X) Function., Randolph M. Conley Jan 2003

A Survey Of The Minkowski ?(X) Function., Randolph M. Conley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Minkowski defined the question mark function ?(x) in 1904 as a map from the rational numbers in the interval [0,1] onto the dyadics in [0,1]. The map can be extended over the entire interval. In providing an historical survey of this function, I review basic results concerning Farey fractions and continued fractions. Then I examine Minkowski’s definition and its extension, and I give a new proof of a basic fact about the extension. By stepping through the literature, I outline the known properties of ?(x) and state some generalizations of the function. Finally, I present an interesting connection to a …

Evaluating Municipal Replacement Trees: Assessing Health And Survival Factors., Scott L. Kilbourn Jan 2003

Evaluating Municipal Replacement Trees: Assessing Health And Survival Factors., Scott L. Kilbourn

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Tree characteristics and environmental factors were evaluated to determine their effect on the health and survival of low-maturing street trees. A total of 271 trees were sampled in 13 West Virginia communities participating in the Municipal Tree Restoration Program (MTRP). Trees were assigned a crown rating on a scale of 0-7, 0 being excellent and 7 being very poor. Crown ratings were based on estimates of crown density, foliage transparency, and crown dieback percentages. Using logistic regression, a model was developed to predict the initial survival. Seven variables were found to have a significant relationship with crown rating: diameter above …

Feed and water were offered ad libitum. There were no significant differences (p>0.05) among the diets in final …

The Effects Of Superimposing The Same Vs. Qualitatively Different Food On Responding Maintained By A Variable-Interval Schedule Of Reinforcement., Jessie-Sue Milo Jan 2003

The Effects Of Superimposing The Same Vs. Qualitatively Different Food On Responding Maintained By A Variable-Interval Schedule Of Reinforcement., Jessie-Sue Milo

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined the effects of response-independent delivery of same vs. qualitatively different food than the reinforcer on rats' lever pressing. During baselines, a variable-interval schedule delivered either pellets or milk. A fixed-time schedule then was superimposed which delivered either response-independent pellets or milk. The order of reinforcer and responseindependent food presentation was counterbalanced across subjects, such that in four different conditions each rat was exposed to each combination of reinforcer and response-independent food presentations. Similarity of the response-independent food to the reinforcer did not differentially disrupt response rates. Response-independent milk decreased response rates more than response-independent pellets. Postreinforcement pausing …

A Longitudinal Content Analysis Of Violence, Sex, And Drugs In Rap Music., Melina Sissum

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study is a longitudinal study of violence, sexual references, and drug use in popular rap music lyrics. The top ten rap songs were gathered from 1994 through 2002 and analyzed. Results indicated that though there is violence in popular rap music it is not predominate. It was also found that when violence is present it is most often without consequences or rationale. Further, it was found that popular rap music contained more sexual references than violence. Also, when sexual references were present it was gratuitously, without reference to relationships. It was also found that there is a high correlation …

Thermomechanical Properties Of Molybdenum Alloys With Dispersing Spinel And Magnesium Oxide Particles., Dongxiang Sun Jan 2003

Thermomechanical Properties Of Molybdenum Alloys With Dispersing Spinel And Magnesium Oxide Particles., Dongxiang Sun

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A number of silicide-based intermetallics are currently being developed for high temperature applications (>1000°C) in advanced fossil energy combustion systems. These alloys consist typically of Mo3Si, Mo5SiB2, and a molybdenum solid solution phase. The Mo5SiB2 phase is required for oxidation resistance. The ductile molybdenum solid solution phase provides toughening. However, a fundamental limitation to their practical utilization is the requirement to maintain the desired high-temperature mechanical properties while also achieving the necessary high-temperature oxidation/hot corrosion resistance. The key challenge of the alloy development is to find the right combination of good oxidation and creep resistance, together with the necessary …

The Scarlet "C": Media Portrayal Of The Christian Music Industry., Amber E. Thaxton Jan 2003

The Scarlet "C": Media Portrayal Of The Christian Music Industry., Amber E. Thaxton

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This project examines how media framing, characterizing, and agenda setting have all played leading roles in the way Christian music, as well as Christian musicians, have been portrayed by the media. Major newspaper articles with the purpose of either previewing, or reviewing the tour of two successful Christian rock bands were analyzed. Articles of two successful secular rock bands were also analyzed in order to compare how the media characterized the band’s music. The results found an overwhelming negative, and often limited view on Christianity. As a result, there has continued to be a negative stigma attached to all things …

A Normal Accident Theory-Based Complexity Assessment Methodology For Safety-Related Embedded Computer Systems., John J. Sammarco Jan 2003

A Normal Accident Theory-Based Complexity Assessment Methodology For Safety-Related Embedded Computer Systems., John J. Sammarco

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Computer-related accidents have caused injuries and fatalities in numerous applications. Normal Accident Theory (NAT) explains that these accidents are inevitable because of system complexity. Complex systems, such as computer-based systems, are highly interconnected, highly interactive, and tightly coupled. We do not have a scientific methodology to identify and quantify these complexities; specifically, NAT has not been operationalized for computer-based systems. Our research addressed this by operationalizing NAT for the system requirements of safety-related computer systems. It was theorized that there are two types of system complexity: external and internal. External complexity was characterized by three variables: system predictability, observability, and …

Aquatic-Terrestrial Linkages In Appalachian Streams: Influence Of Riparian Inputs On Stream Habitat, Brook Trout Populations, And Trophic Dynamics., John A. Sweka Jan 2003

Aquatic-Terrestrial Linkages In Appalachian Streams: Influence Of Riparian Inputs On Stream Habitat, Brook Trout Populations, And Trophic Dynamics., John A. Sweka

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Riparian zones play a major role in the structure and function of headwater stream ecosystems. Inputs of leaf litter from riparian zones are the primary energy source for secondary production in these streams and inputs of large woody debris (LWD) help shape stream habitat. Riparian zones of Appalachian streams were degraded by past timber harvest activities. Streamside management zones (SMZs) now protect the riparian zone by limiting timber harvest activities near streams. The objective of this study was to examine aquatic-terrestrial linkages and how habitat and food resources influence brook trout ( Salvelinus fontinalis) populations in Appalachian streams. LWD was …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This nonexperimental, descriptive, correlational study addressed the problem of consistency and fairness in evaluating student nurses' reflective writing for evidence of critical thinking. The purposes were twofold: To describe the relationships among teacher ratings, cognitive word use, and a standardized measure of critical thinking in baccalaureate nursing students; and to describe the extent that teacher ratings and cognitive word use are predictive of a standardized measure of critical thinking. A teacher designed tool, the Critical Thinking Scale (CTS), was used by five faculty members to independently evaluate graduates' reflective writings for evidence of critical thinking. The California Critical Thinking Skills …

Framing The View: The *Western Landscape And Nineteenth-Century Narratives Of Expansion., Thomas P. Kinnahan Jan 2003

Framing The View: The *Western Landscape And Nineteenth-Century Narratives Of Expansion., Thomas P. Kinnahan

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study traces the flowering of Western scientific exploration during the fifteen years following the Civil War. During these years, the empirical modes of perception and representation associated with Western exploration gained growing cultural authority and increasingly came to frame discussions of Western policy. At the same time, the systematic exploration of the West revealed the region in new and sometimes startling ways, in some cases prompting far-reaching revisions in the nation's self-perception. The stakes of these revisions became especially acute in the 1870's as the nation's frontier line flowed toward the alien landscapes of the arid West, prompting both …

The Impact Of Student Discourse And Journal Writing On The Mathematics Achievement Of Fifth-Grade Students., Lesley A. Klishis

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In its Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics called for a new vision of what is means to be mathematically literate (NCTM, 2000). A major goal of this reform movement has been to provide students with opportunities to develop "mathematical habits of the mind to not only know the signs, symbols, and terms of mathematics, but to read, write, and discuss mathematics. This study investigated the relationship between instructional strategies and student understanding in mathematics. Specifically, the study explored whether student discourse is a desirable prerequisite of journal writing, and whether the …

Affective Factors In Second Language Acquisition: A Critical Review Of The Literature., Laura M. Yokochi Jan 2003

Affective Factors In Second Language Acquisition: A Critical Review Of The Literature., Laura M. Yokochi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Learning a second language is fundamentally different from child language development as well as from the study of other academic disciplines. One reason may be that the study of a second language involves the emotions and the identity in a way other subjects do not. Schumann (1998) argues that emotion filters all learning and cognition. If this is true then the study of affective factors in second language learning is important. What research has been done in this area and what does it show? The purpose of this paper is to conduct a critical review of empirical studies on the …
