Software Project Management: The Role Of Modeling, Omar F. El-Gayar, Sreedhar Thota

Research & Publications

With the ubiquity of software and in the quest towards improving software development activities, the software engineering research community engaged in an active research agenda on modeling software processes. The modeling objectives ranged from process understanding, improvement, and management, to project management. In spite of the significant achievements in the field, few (if any) of the research results are adopted by the industry. This paper presents a brief review and a critical evaluation of the status of software process modeling practices with particular emphasis on their applications to project management from a practitioner's point of view as well as recommendations …

Congenital Acinar Dysplasia. Familial Cause Of A Fatal Respiratory Failure In A Neonate, Kefah A. Al-Senan, Abdulhakiem K. Kattan, Fouad H. Al-Dayel

Saudi Medical Journal

Pulmonary hypoplasia is a rare cause of pulmonary insufficiency, and has a significant rate of morbidity and mortality among affected infants. In most cases, pulmonary hypoplasia is secondary to underlying abnormalities. These may include space occupying lesions, as in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia; malformation of chest wall resulting in a small thoracic cavity; severe and prolonged oligohydramnios; and neuromuscular disorders, which prevent normal fetal chest expansion. All lead to poor lung development. Primary pulmonary hypoplasia as a result of congenital acinar dysplasia is exceedingly rare and is diagnosed by exclusion of all known etiologies of secondary pulmonary hypoplasia.

Shareholder Value And Auditor Independence, William Wilson Bratton Jan 2003

Shareholder Value And Auditor Independence, William Wilson Bratton

Articles

This Article questions the practice of framing problems concerning auditors' professional responsibility inside a principal-agent paradigm. If professional independence is to be achieved, auditors cannot be enmeshed in agency relationships with the shareholders of their audit clients. As agents, the auditors by definition become subject to the principal's control and cannot act independently. For the same reason, auditors' duties should be neither articulated in the framework of corporate law fiduciary duty, nor conceived relationally at all. These assertions follow from an inquiry into the operative notion of the shareholder-beneficiary. The Article unpacks the notion of the shareholder and tells a …

Recalibrating Federal Judicial Independence Symposium: Perspectives On Judicial Independence: Accountability And Separation Of Power Issues, James J. Brudney Jan 2003

Recalibrating Federal Judicial Independence Symposium: Perspectives On Judicial Independence: Accountability And Separation Of Power Issues, James J. Brudney

Faculty Scholarship

It is well settled that independent courts play a vital role in promoting rule-of-law and separation-of-powers norms. At the same time, judicial independence must be reconciled with other values that we also wish to recognize as foundational. Professor Brudney addresses two areas of controversy that are associated with the celebration of judicial autonomy in our legal culture. He first discusses the role of political and personal background factors in shaping judicial selection and influencing judicial outcomes. He explains why both the President and Congress have come to rely increasingly on such background factors when seeking to anticipate the broad contours …

States And Internet Enforcement, Joel R. Reidenberg Jan 2003

States And Internet Enforcement, Joel R. Reidenberg

Faculty Scholarship

This essay addresses the enforcement of decisions through internet instruments. The starting point is a brief justification of internet enforcement as the obligation of democratic states. Next, the essay argues that the movement to re-engineer the internet infrastructure by public and private actions also facilitates state enforcement of legal and policy decisions. The essay maintains that states will increasingly try to use network intermediaries such as payment systems and Internet Service Providers as enforcement instruments. Finally, and most importantly, the essay focuses on ways that states may harness the power of technological instruments such as worms, filters and packet interceptors …

Legal Issues Under Wto Rules On The Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (Cepa) Between Mainland China And Hong Kong, Henry S. Gao

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

On 29 June 2003, the Central Government of the People's Republic of China (the Mainland) and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) signed the Mainland and Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA). As the first Regional Trade Agreement (RTA) for both sides, the CEPA provides a model for China to use the arrangements allowed under the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to further trade liberalisation and promote economic development. This is a commendable endeavour. However, due to the complexity of the relevant rules of the WTO, caution must be exercised in the formulation and implementation of …

However, for Obtaining Accurate Values of Bubble Velocity and Size, the Four-Point Probe Must Be Calibrated by a CCD Camera at the Same Conditions. Calibration Columns Have Been Developed for This Purpose Where the Bubble Size and Velocity Can Be Varied to Calibrate the Measurements by …

Instance Based Attribute Identification In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Jan 2003

Instance Based Attribute Identification In Database Integration, Ee Peng Lim, Cecil Chua, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Most research on attribute identification in database integration has focused on integrating attributes using schema and summary information derived from the attribute values. No research has attempted to fully explore the use of attribute values to perform attribute identification. We propose an attribute identification method that employs schema and summary instance information as well as properties of attributes derived from their instances. Unlike other attribute identification methods that match only single attributes, our method matches attribute groups for integration. Because our attribute identification method fully explores data instances, it can identify corresponding attributes to be integrated even when schema information …

In light of the generally poor understanding of Islamic law among American lawyers, one can only hope that a publication such as this succeeds in generating greater intellectual curiosity about Islamic law among readers of American law journals. The authors hope that this collection of Articles will lead to renewed interest in Islamic law and theology as intellectually gratifying topics of inquiry in …

Islam And The Challenge Of Democratic Commitment, Dr. Khaled Abou El-Fadl Jan 2003

Islam And The Challenge Of Democratic Commitment, Dr. Khaled Abou El-Fadl

Fordham International Law Journal

The author questions whether concurrent and simultaneous moral and normative commitments to Islam and to a democratic form of government are reconcilable or mutually exclusive. The author will argue in this Article that it is indeed possible to reconcile Islam with a commitment in favor of democracy. The author will then present a systematic exploration of Islamic theology and law as it relates to a democratic system of government, and in this context, address the various elements within Islamic belief and practice that promote, challenge, or hinder the emergence of an ideological commitment in favor of democracy. In many ways, …
