Effect Of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation On Postural Hypotension In Patients With Cervical Cord Injury, Max J. L. Chen, Pao-Tsai Cheng, Mei-Yun Liaw, Alice M.K. Wong, Wei-Shung Wong, Tshe-Shun Shie Dec 2003

Effect Of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation On Postural Hypotension In Patients With Cervical Cord Injury, Max J. L. Chen, Pao-Tsai Cheng, Mei-Yun Liaw, Alice M.K. Wong, Wei-Shung Wong, Tshe-Shun Shie

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Postural hypotension is often observed in patients with cervical spinal cord injury. It may cause syncope, and interfere with sitting and standing trainings. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) was reported to be able to alleviate and even prevent postural hypotension. The exact mechanism is not certain yet, but it may be related to vagal reflexes or muscle pumping actions. To investigate the effect of NMES on tetraplegic patients, we have recruited 10 patients with acute cervical spinal cord injuries (American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale A and B) suffering from postural hypotension. These patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: four …

Moyamoya Disease In Children: A Casereport, Chung-Li Tseng, Chia-Ying Chung, Chia-Ling Chen, Pao-Tsai Cheng, Simon F. T. Tang, Alice M. K.Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

This work describes motor, cognition and emotional problems in a child with Moyamoya disease before and after rehabilitation. Following comprehensive rehabilitation, the girl achieved improved gross motor, fine motor, cognition and emotional control. Moyamoya disease is an important cause of childhood ischemic stroke. Moyamoya disease has a bimodal age distribution, with one group of pediatric age (around first decade of life), and a second group of adults in the 30 to 40-year-old age range. Moyamoya disease involves progressive idiopathic stenosis and eventual occlusion of the large cerebral arteries at the circle of Willis. The pathogenesis of Moyamoya disease remains unclear. …

Slit Ventricle Syndrome In A Hemorrhagic Stroke Patient After A Shunt Surgery: A Casereport, Tung-Yang Yu, Sai-Cheung Lee, Jin-Rong Lin, Chih-Chin Hsu

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

A 55-year-old male patient suffered from left intracranial hemorrhage received craniotomy and removal of intracerebral hematoma. Ventriculoperitoneal shunt was implanted for the complication of hydrocephalus. The skull was put back later because of stable status. He developed scalp necrosis and, therefore several times of debridement was done. The skull was taken away under the suspicion of osteomyelitis. However, he had vomiting, somnolence, urinary incontinence and unable to walk two months after this procedure. Computed tomography showed slit ventricles in right hemisphere. The shunt was then removed and his clinical conditions improved. Slit ventricle syndrome is commonly seen in children, rather …

Acute Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyradiculoneuropathy: A Casereport, Ya-Fang Lee, Nai-Chiung Huang, Ta-Sen Wei

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), also known as Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS),the most common illness that causes acute and generalized paralyzing condition in the post-polio era, is diagnosed dependent on the base of clinical manifestations with supportive evidence of electrophysiologic study and cerebrospinal fluid examination. GBS often begins with the distal part of four limbs followed by a progressive course as ascending weakness and may even involve respiratory , facial or oropharyngeal muscles. Spinal fluid examination often reveals elevated protein concentration without associated increase in cells. Plasma exchange has become the gold standard of GBS treatment; in patients contraindicated for plasma …

A year before the present admission, the patient suffered lower limbs weakness and received surgical intervention with thoracic corpectomy and fixation with vertebral prosthesis, anterior spinal instrumentation and posterior fusion with pedicle screw at Stanford hospital in the U.S.A. The patient tolerated the procedure well and achieved some improvement in his leg sensation and muscle power. The patient then returned to Taiwan for rehabilitation therapy at Chang-Gung …

The Law And The Elderly In Singapore: The Law On Income And Maintenance For The Elderly, Locknie Hsu Dec 2003

The Law And The Elderly In Singapore: The Law On Income And Maintenance For The Elderly, Locknie Hsu

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

By 2030, Singapore's elderly will make up a staggering 19% of the population. With such a large proportion of people becoming old, it is timely to pay some attention to the broad spectrum of legal issues surrounding elder. Several sociological and statistical studies have been done on the elderly Singapore, yet relatively little has been written on the law relating to them. Much of the present legislation which directly or indirectly addresses problems of the elderly in Singapore relate to their financial arrangements. Examples of these are provisions relating to withdrawal of Central Provident Fund (CPF) monies and the age …

Political Implications Of Confucian Familism, Antonio Rappa, Sor-Hoon Tan Dec 2003

Political Implications Of Confucian Familism, Antonio Rappa, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The family could be mobilized as a political resource for economic ‘development’. What kind of family would be compatible with a knowledge-based economy? We argue that authoritarian Confucian familism is incompatible with the knowledge-based economy; but it is possible to construct a different model of the ideal Confucian family which will be compatible with such an economy: a family ideal that emphasizes internal strengths of relationships rather than building barriers to keep out ‘undesirable influences’, that advocates a respect for authority that is authoritative rather than authoritarian.

Assessing The Relative Informativeness And Permanence Of Pro Forma Earnings And Gaap Operating Earnings, Nilabhra Bhattacharya, Erv Black, Ted Christensen, Chad Larson Dec 2003

Assessing The Relative Informativeness And Permanence Of Pro Forma Earnings And Gaap Operating Earnings, Nilabhra Bhattacharya, Erv Black, Ted Christensen, Chad Larson

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study investigates whether market participants perceive pro forma earnings to be more informative and more persistent than GAAP operating income by analyzing a sample of 1,149 actual pro forma press releases. We find that pro forma announcers report frequent GAAP losses and are mostly concentrated in the service and high-tech industries. Our analyses of short-window abnormal returns and revisions in analysts’ one-quarter-ahead earnings forecasts indicate that pro forma earnings are more informative and more permanent than GAAP operating earnings. Our evidence suggests that market participants believe pro forma earnings are more representative of “core earnings” than GAAP operating income.

Influence Of Isoflurane On Left Atrial Function In Dogs With Pacing-Induced Cardiomyopathy: Evaluation With Pressure-Volume Relationships, Franz Kehl, John F. Ladisa, Douglas Anthony Hettrick, Judy R. Kersten, David C. Warltier, Paul S. Pagel

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Objective

The actions of volatile anesthetics on left ventricular (LV) function in normal and failing hearts have been previously evaluated, but the effects of these agents on left atrial (LA) function in the presence of LV dysfunction are unknown. The hypothesis was tested that isoflurane alters LA mechanics evaluated with pressure-volume relations.

Design

Prospective.

Setting

Laboratory.

Participants

Barbiturate-anesthetized dogs (n = 8) were instrumented for measurement of aortic, LA, and LV pressures (micromanometers), and LA volume (epicardial orthogonal sonomicrometers) after 3 weeks of rapid ventricular pacing (220 beats/min).

Interventions

LA myocardial contractility (Ees) was assessed with end-systolic pressure-volume …

Transfer Regulations And Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Eric A. Posner Dec 2003

Transfer Regulations And Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Eric A. Posner

Duke Law Journal

Recent scholarship on regulatory oversight has focused on cost-benefit analysis of perscriptive regulations-regulations that restrict behavior such as pollution-and their use to cure market failures, and has overlooked the vast number of transfer regulations. Transfer regulations are regulations that channel funds to beneficiaries. These regulations are authorized by statutes that establish entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security, pay one-time distributions to victims of misfortunes such as natural disasters and the 9/11 terrorist attack, and fund pork barrel spending. Cost-benefit analysis cannot be used to evaluate transfer regulations because all transfer regulations fail cost-benefit analysis; cost-effectiveness analysis, however, can be …

The Virtues Of Knowing Less: Justifying Privacy Protections Against Disclosure, Daniel J. Solove Dec 2003

The Virtues Of Knowing Less: Justifying Privacy Protections Against Disclosure, Daniel J. Solove

Duke Law Journal

This Article develops justifications for protections against the disclosure of private information. An extensive body of scholarship has attacked such protections as anathema to the Information Age, where the free flow of information is championed as a fundamental value. This Article responds to two general critiques of disclosure protections: (1) that they inhibit freedom of speech, and (2) that they restrict information useful for judging others. Regarding the free speech critique, the Article argues that not all speech is of equal value; speech of private concern is less valuable than speech of public concern. The difficulty, however, is distinguishing between …

Guidelines For Reaching Out And Counseling Low Income Monolingual Latino Clients, Lucy Delgadillo Dec 2003

Guidelines For Reaching Out And Counseling Low Income Monolingual Latino Clients, Lucy Delgadillo

Journal of Extension

In light of the growth of the U.S. Latino population, a model to outreach, serve, and counsel low income, monolingual immigrant Latino clients is proposed. It is suggested that the marketing strategy of educational programs for this particular group is different than for higher income, bilingual Latino groups or other ethnic groups. Traditional market strategies must be combined with less traditional approaches. Guidance and recommendations to help financial counselors maintain a culturally attuned position with their clients while guiding them toward their financial goals are provided.

The Perceived Value Of Certification By Certified Perioperative Nurses, Kathleen B. Gaberson, Kathryn Schroeter, Aileen R. Killen, Wendelny A. Valentine

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

We conducted this study to determine the perceived value of certification in perioperative nursing. Following development and pilot-testing, we mailed the 18-item Likert-type instrument, the Perceived Value of Certification Tool (PVCT), to a sample of 2750 perioperative nurses who had earned the CNOR or CRNFA credential or both. A total of 1398 surveys were returned (50.8% response rate). Factor analysis extracted three factors, accounting for 61% of the variance: personal value, recognition by others, and professional practice. Internal consistency reliability testing (Cronbach's α) identified a standardized α of .924. Over 90% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed with statements about …

Hand Rule Damages For Incompensable Losses, Robert Cooter Dec 2003

Hand Rule Damages For Incompensable Losses, Robert Cooter

San Diego Law Review

Courts should develop theory and practice of damages for incompensable losses based on the response of reasonable people to daily risks. Specifically, courts should compute damages based on the reasonable person's point of indifference between less risk and more expenditure on precaution. The Hand rule describes this point of indifference.

Can We Compensate For Incompensable Harms?, Adi Ayal Dec 2003

Can We Compensate For Incompensable Harms?, Adi Ayal

San Diego Law Review

Compensating for harms is the bedrock of the practice of tort law. The hypothetical ideal of "making the victim whole" guides many a classroom discussion and judicial opinion. Yet we all know that his ideal is often unattainable for a variety of practical and conceptual reasons. Focusing on the conceptual issues, a question might be asked: Are we ever Really able to make the victim whole? In this Article, I aim to stress and develop the aspects of the argument I find most convincing, while critiquing others.

Baselines And Compensation, F.M. Kamm Dec 2003

Baselines And Compensation, F.M. Kamm

San Diego Law Review

The first problem that we shall examine is raised by the cases in which by our tortious wrong act someone is either (1) made no worse off than he would have been because the injury is one he would have suffered anyway by another means or (2) made better off because, though the act produces an injury, it benefits him by interfering with an upcoming greater injury. Should we assign liability based on the fact that an injury was caused relative to how the person was in his prior uninjured state (namely, the causal approach)? Or, should we take account …

Dardinger V. Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield: Judicial Redistribution Of Punitive Damage Awards, C.J. Martin

San Diego Law Review

This Casenote examines the role of punitive damages in tort law and the actions of the Ohio Supreme Court in Dardinger v. Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield. The author begins by describing the anomalous nature of punitive damages, which are a form of punishment, being given to a plaintiff in a tort system that is compensatory in nature. The author then gives an overview of the punitive damages doctrine historically and as it exists today. Next, the author discusses the Dardinger case and analyzes the implications of the court's decision to remit a portion of the punitive damages on …
