Trying To Fix The Development In Evolutionary Developmental Psychology, David S. Moore Jul 2003

Trying To Fix The Development In Evolutionary Developmental Psychology, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

If we agree for a moment that there is such a thing as human nature, we immediately encounter an extraordinarily thorny question: Where does our nature come from? The question is so challenging, in part, because human nature reflects at least two conceptually distinct processes: evolution and development. The former, which operates across generations, allows the continued existence of characteristics that permitted survival and reproduction in our ancestors; the latter, which operates during a person’s lifetime, contributes to the appearance of …

Who Decides And What Difference Does It Make?: Defining Marriage In "Our Democratic, Federal Republic", Kevin J. Worthen

Brigham Young University Journal of Public Law

The debate over the legality of same-sex marriage has centered largely on the substantive merits of the issue. This article does not. Instead, it seeks to draw attention to the perhaps equally important-but often overlooked-issue of the proper form and forum for resolving the substantive issue. It asks the question, if we awoke tomorrow to the newspaper headline -- "Legality of Same-Sex Marriage Decided" -- what difference would it make if the succeeding story referred to 1) a federal statute, 2) a U. S. Supreme Court decision, 3) a federal constitutional amendment, 4) a state statute, 5) a state supreme …

The global demographic impact of the 1918-19 influenza pandemic continues to fascinate researchers and scholars. This paper examines the social and demographic effects of this outbreak on Iranian society, through a comprehensive investigation of the modes of transmission and propagation, mortality rates, and other distinctive features of the region, and reveals the importance of taking a country's unique sociopolitical settings into account. Iran was one of the regions hit hardest by the pandemic, with mortality rates significantly higher than in most regions of the world. Though globally the victims of influenza lived primarily in urban areas, it was Iran's rural …

Managing Contemporary Uk Universities – Manager-Academics And New Managerialism, Rosemary Deem, Oliver Fulton, Sam Hillyard, Rachel Johnson, Mike Reed, Stephen Watson

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

A multi-disciplinary project entitled ‘New Managerialism and the Management of UK Universities’ was conducted by a team of researchers based at Lancaster University between October 1998 and November 2000. The study was funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (grant no R000237661). The project was designed to examine the extent to which ‘New Managerialism’, a set of reforms of the management of publicly-funded services popular with many western governments, was perceived to have permeated the management of UK universities. The study also explored the roles, practices, selection, learning and support of manager-academics. The first phase of the study …

The Politics Of Development In Indigenous Panama, Stefanie Wickstrom Jul 2003

The Politics Of Development In Indigenous Panama, Stefanie Wickstrom

Political Science Faculty Scholarship

How have indigenous societies responded to the changes taking place around them as development proceeds, and how have they been able to retain or regain control over resource management and their own forms of development? This article examines the experiences of the Kunas and the Ngöbe of Panama as they attempt to survive and adapt to development imposed by a dominant society. These indigenous societies have adapted to different ecological settings on the small isthmus, have been faced with different kinds of challenges to their control of lands and resources, and have responded in different ways. The first section contains …

Global Patterns Of Dissolved N, P And Si In Large Rivers, R. Eugene Turner, Nancy N. Rabalais, D. Justic', Q. Dortch

Faculty Publications

The concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved nitrate-N, Total-N (TN), dissolved inorganic phosphate (DIP), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved silicate-Si (DSi) and their ratios in the world's largest rivers are examined using a global data base that includes 37% of the earth's watershed area and half its population. These data were compared to water quality in 42 subbasins of the relatively well-monitored Mississippi River basin (MRB) and of 82 small watersheds of the United States. The average total nitrogen concentration varies over three orders of magnitude among both world river watersheds and the MRB, and is primarily dependent on variations …

The Chicago Climate Exchange: Greenhouse Gases Be Reduced Absent Government Mandates?, Angie Farleigh Jul 2003

The Chicago Climate Exchange: Greenhouse Gases Be Reduced Absent Government Mandates?, Angie Farleigh

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

The Chicago Climate Exchange (“CCX”) is a voluntary tradable permit program for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The program includes voluntary emissions reductions and trading for all six greenhouse gases. Trading in carbon dioxide is expected to generate the most interest. Member companies make a legally binding agreement to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases by 4% below the average of their 1998-2001 emissions by 2006. This figure was reached during the design phase, through consensus among the founding member companies. It was a goal that all of the companies felt they could reach, but CCX representatives note that it is …

David, Goliath And The Beach Cleaning Machine: How A Small California Town Fought An Oil Giant—And Won! By Barbara Wolcott, Matt Brown

Wolcott’s book focuses on the small town of Avila Beach and how its citizens, upon learning that they were sitting on top of a large oil plume, fought to have Unocal, the company that had supported the town for so long, clean up the mess. At the center of the action are the lawyers and the bureaucrats who go up against the mighty corporation. The book describes how the environmental lawyers, the water experts, county and state politicians, state and county bureaucrats, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the California Attorney General’s Office among others gathered their forces and used …

Cardiac Pacing In Hong Kong: Second Report Of The Hong Kong Pacing Registry Jul 2003

Cardiac Pacing In Hong Kong: Second Report Of The Hong Kong Pacing Registry

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

The first permanent pacemaker was implanted in Hong Kong in early seventies. Since then, the use of permanent pacing has steadily increased. The manufactures' sales figures were the only source of reference. In 1990, a Hong Kong Pacing Registry was set up, with the aim to establish a reliable source of pacemaker use in Hong Kong. Data were entered into a registry form during every permanent pacemaker implantation. The areas focused were: patient demographics (sex, age, symptomatology, associated medical illnesses and rhythm problems), pacemaker system characteristics (polarity, programmability and pacing mode) and implant procedure (site and route of entry and …
