Accountability In Medicaid Managed Care: Implications For Pediatric Health Care Quality, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Anne R. Markus, Colleen Sonosky, Lee Repasch, D. Richard Mauery, Andy Schneider

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

This study examines the structure and operation of Medicaid and State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) health care access and quality monitoring systems for children enrolled in comprehensive managed care arrangements. As the single largest purchasers of pediatric health care in the U.S., Medicaid and SCHIP agencies play a potentially powerful role in pediatric health policy. How these agencies approach, design, and carry out health quality monitoring activities has the potential to have a major impact not only for poor and low-income children, but for the entire pediatric health system. Even when these systems are developed exclusively for publicly insured …

Role Of Physical Activity On Bone Mineral Content In Young Children, Bonny L. Specker Dec 2003

Role Of Physical Activity On Bone Mineral Content In Young Children, Bonny L. Specker

Ethel Austin Martin Program Publications

Previous studies identifying factors that influence peak bone mass have typically focused on older children, although it has been suggested that environmental factors early in life also may be important in optimizing the genetic potential for bone gain1 . Physical activity and calcium intake are considered major environmental factors influencing bone mass accretion. Longitudinal studies beginning in childhood show that high activity early in life is associated with high adult bone density2,3. The long-term effect between bone mass accretion and early calcium intake is less clear, with most trials finding that the beneficial bone effect of high calcium intake does …

Optimization Of Breast Cancer Screening Modalities, Yu Shen, Giovanni Parmigiani Dec 2003

Optimization Of Breast Cancer Screening Modalities, Yu Shen, Giovanni Parmigiani

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Mathematical models and decision analyses based on microsimulations have been shown to be useful in evaluating relative merits of various screening strategies in terms of cost and mortality reduction. Most investigations regarding the balance between mortality reduction and costs have focused on a single modality, mammography. A systematic evaluation of the relative expenses and projected benefit of combining clinical breast examination and mammography is not at present available. The purpose of this report is to provide methodologic details including assumptions and data used in the process of modeling for complex decision analyses, when searching for optimal breast cancer screening strategies …

Modeling The Incubation Period Of Anthrax, Ron Brookmeyer, Elizabeth Johnson, Sarah Barry Dec 2003

Modeling The Incubation Period Of Anthrax, Ron Brookmeyer, Elizabeth Johnson, Sarah Barry

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

Models of the incubation period of anthrax are important to public health planners because they can be used to predict the delay before outbreaks are detected, the size of an outbreak and the duration of time that persons should remain on antibiotics to prevent disease. The difficulty is that there is little direct data about the incubation period in humans. The objective of this paper is to develop and apply models for the incubation period of anthrax. Mechanistic models that account for the biology of spore clearance and germination are developed based on a competing risks formulation. The models predict …

Assessing A Media Discernment Course For Freshmen At Illiana Christian High School: A Case Study, William Boerman-Cornell Dec 2003

Assessing A Media Discernment Course For Freshmen At Illiana Christian High School: A Case Study, William Boerman-Cornell

Master of Education Program Theses

This case study examines the effectiveness of a team-taught mass-media freshman level course on discernment of media messages, and decision-making. By means of pre- and post- course surveys of students and faculty, this study examines students' decisions about consuming mass media and how after taking the course, their media selection process became more complex, deliberate, and organized. It also examines faculty response to the course in terms of how it appears to affect the students and how it affects faculty teaching and learning.

Love At What Price? Estimating The Value Of Marriage, Michael Conlin, Stacy A. Dickert-Conlin, Elyse Whitney Dec 2003

Love At What Price? Estimating The Value Of Marriage, Michael Conlin, Stacy A. Dickert-Conlin, Elyse Whitney

Economics - All Scholarship

Using a law within Social Security that provides clear financial incentives to delay marriage, we estimate the financial value of a month of marriage. Specifically, the law provides that widows who are eligible for Social Security benefits on their deceased spouse's earnings records are eligible for benefits at age 60, unless they remarry before that age. If they remarry before that age, they cannot claim widow benefits and must wait until at least age 62 to claim spousal benefits on their new husband's record, which are typically less generous than widow benefits. To generate an estimate of what this behavior …

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center Dec 2003

Trust, Collaboration, And Financial Return In Conservation/Development Partnerships, New England Environmental Finance Center

Economics and Finance

In early 2002 the New England Environmental Finance Center hosted a series of roundtable discussions among municipal officials, residential developers, land trust representatives, and others about "Innovative Approaches to Land Conservation and Smart Growth". Among our observations was that for many of the over 20 conservation/development partnerships we discussed in the series, creation and maintenance of trust was central to success or failure of various stages of the partnership. This suggested a link between creation of trust and financial return for traditionally opposed project partners.

To further examine this matter, we interviewed 11 round table participants and asked questions about …
