Serving The "Hard-To-Serve": The Use Of Clinical Knowledge In Welfare Reform, Rufina Lee, Laura Curran Sep 2003

Serving The "Hard-To-Serve": The Use Of Clinical Knowledge In Welfare Reform, Rufina Lee, Laura Curran

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This critical analysis of recent research and evaluations of welfare reform efforts describes how states have increasingly drawn on clinical knowledge in their efforts to move "hard-to-serve" recipients into the labor force. It argues that a clinical perspective is helpful as it brings attention to the mental health needs of low-income women. At the same time, however, this article suggests that states' use of a clinical framework is problematic in so far as it based on limited knowledge, dampens a broad discussion of the relationship between poverty and mental health, contributes to policy ambiguity, and increases recipient oversight.

Prevalence Of Child Welfare Services Involvement Among Homeless And Low-Income Mothers: A Five-Year Birth Cohort Study, Jennifer F. Culhane, David Webb, Susan Grim, Stephen Metraux, Dennis Culhane

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper investigates the five-year prevalence of child welfare services involvement and foster care placement among a population-based cohort of births in a large US city, by housing status of the mothers (mothers who have been homeless at least once, other low-income neighborhood residents, and all others), and by number of children. Children of mothers with at least one homeless episode have the greatest rate of involvement with child welfare services (37%),followed by other low-income residents (9.2%), and all others (4.0%). Involvement rates increase with number of children for all housing categories, with rates highest among women with four or …

Spousal Abuse: Vietnamese Children's Reports Of Parental Violence, Yoko Baba, Susan B. Murray Sep 2003

Spousal Abuse: Vietnamese Children's Reports Of Parental Violence, Yoko Baba, Susan B. Murray

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This exploratory study used mailed questionnaires completed by 131 Vietnamese students to examine domestic violence patterns in parents' marital relationships. Research objectives included: (1) gaining an understanding of spousal abuse among Vietnamese couples; and (2) assessing which variables (demographic characteristics, decision-making power, and cultural adaptation, beliefs in traditional gender roles, and conflicts in the family) are correlated with spousal abuse. Findings suggest that although both parents used reasoning, mental abuse and physical abuse in their marital relationships, Vietnamese fathers were more likely to be physically abusive than mothers. Additional variables associated with family conflicts are also examined. Research implications and …

The Social Problem Of Depression: A Multi-Theoretical Analysis, Rich Furman, Kimberly Bender Sep 2003

The Social Problem Of Depression: A Multi-Theoretical Analysis, Rich Furman, Kimberly Bender

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the social problem of depression from a multi-theoretical perspective. It explores depression through the lens of two psychologically based theories of human behavior, existential theory and cognitive theory, as well as through the vehicle of two sociological theories, Marxist theory and the theory of oppression. By understanding how each of these theories explains depression, social workers may be helped to see the complexity of treating the problem. It is the belief of the authors that social work literature, which is often dominated by reductionist, quantitativelybased research studies, has increasingly ignored theoretical explorations …

Radiation Effects On Dopamine-Mediated Prepulse Inhibition In The C57bl/6 Mouse, Cara Nicole Zuccarelli Miller Sep 2003

Radiation Effects On Dopamine-Mediated Prepulse Inhibition In The C57bl/6 Mouse, Cara Nicole Zuccarelli Miller

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study examined the effects of proton and gamma radiation on a dopamine-dependent sensory gating mechanism: prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex. The purpose of this research was to describe potential hazards of proton radiation to the central nervous system in long-term space fight and for proton therapy patients. Results from previous research indicate that startle behavior is modified by proton and iron radiation. Forty-eight 10-½ week old, male C57BL/6 mice were used to characterize the optimal parameters for the model (prepulse duration, probe duration, and stimulus-onset-asynchrony). Three hundred and fifty two mice were used to characterize the time course …

Quantitation Of Contacts Among Sensory, Motor, And Serotonergic Neurons In The Pedal Ganglion Of Aplysia, Han Zhang, Marcy Wainwright, John H. Byrne, Leonard J. Cleary Sep 2003

Quantitation Of Contacts Among Sensory, Motor, And Serotonergic Neurons In The Pedal Ganglion Of Aplysia, Han Zhang, Marcy Wainwright, John H. Byrne, Leonard J. Cleary

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Present models of long-term sensitization in Aplysia californica indicate that the enhanced behavioral response is due, at least in part, to outgrowth of sensory neurons mediating defensive withdrawal reflexes. Presumably, this outgrowth strengthens pre-existing connections by formation of new synapses with follower neurons. However, the relationship between the number of sensorimotor contacts and the physiological strength of the connection has never been examined in intact ganglia. As a first step in addressing this issue, we used confocal microscopy to examine sites of contact between sensory and motor neurons in naive animals. Our results revealed relatively few contacts between physiologically connected …

Sequential Myofascial Trigger Point Injection To Treat A Patient With Myofascial Pain Syndrome Associated With Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy: A Casereport, Ta-Shen Kuan, Chang-Zern Hong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

A patient with traumatic rotator cuff tear of right shoulder developed severe myofascial pain syndrome with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) involving the right upper extremity. She was unable to take any type of manual therapy or needle treatment due to severe allodynia in the whole right upper limb. She visited our pain clinic about 2 months after the onset of trauma. She received myofascial trigger point (MTrP) injection beginning with injection into the MTrP of the right first dorsal interosseous muscle, followed by injecting MTrPs of the right wrist-finger extensors and right anterior deltoid muscles. The allodynia was remarkably reduced. …

Posttraumatic Pelvic Lymphocele: A Casereport, Nai-Chiung Huang, Sen-Yung Liu, I-Ru Chen, Ta-Sen Wei

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

The development of pelvic lymphocele is usually a complication following renal transplantation as well as pelvic lymphadenectomy for gynecologic or urologic cancers. Pelvic lymphocele after blunt trauma is rare described before. Asymptomatic patients are managed with observation and follow-up imaging studies. Symptomatic lymphoceles need to be treated by means of percutaneous needle aspiration or drainage. We reported a case of low back pain after a fall with delayed onset of ispilateral thigh swelling. Computed tomography revealed a fluid-filled mass in the pelvis. After treatment by CT-guided percutaneous aspiration, all symptoms rapidly resolved without recurrent symptoms in 6 months follow-up.
