Cultivation Of Tropheryma Whipplei From Cerebrospinal Fluid, Matthias Maiwald, Axel Von Herbay, David N. Fredricks, Cleber C. Ouverney, Jon C. Kosek, David A. Relman

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Whipple disease (WD) is a systemic disorder caused by the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei. Since the recognition of a bacterial etiology in 1961, many attempts have been made to cultivate this bacterium in vitro. It was eventually isolated, in 2000, from an infected heart valve, in coculture with human fibroblasts. Here we report the isolation of 2 new strains of T. whipplei from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 2 patients with intestinal WD but no neurological signs or symptoms. One culture-positive specimen was obtained before treatment; the other was obtained 12 months after discontinuation of therapy, at a time of intestinal remission. …

A Null Mutation For Tissue Inhibitor Of Metalloproteinases-3 (Timp-3) Impairs Murine Bronchiole Branching Morphogenesis., Sean E Gill, M Cynthia Pape, Rama Khokha, Andrew J Watson, Kevin J Leco Sep 2003

A Null Mutation For Tissue Inhibitor Of Metalloproteinases-3 (Timp-3) Impairs Murine Bronchiole Branching Morphogenesis., Sean E Gill, M Cynthia Pape, Rama Khokha, Andrew J Watson, Kevin J Leco

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) regulate extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). We have examined the role of TIMP-3 on ECM homeostasis and bronchiole branching morphogenesis during murine embryogenesis. Employing an in vitro organ culture system, we found decreased bronchiolar branching in null lungs when compared with wild type (WT) counterparts after 2 days in culture. When a synthetic inhibitor of MMPs at low dose was added to the culture system, branching was augmented regardless of genotype. Gelatin and in situ zymography revealed that null lungs exhibited enhanced activation of MMPs throughout lung development. We analysed the impact …

Shaping Public Programs Through Medicare, Medicaid, And Schip Waivers: The Fundamentals, Cynthia Shirk Sep 2003

Shaping Public Programs Through Medicare, Medicaid, And Schip Waivers: The Fundamentals, Cynthia Shirk

National Health Policy Forum

This background paper examines the use of research, demonstration, and program waiver authorities to test new approaches to the delivery of and payment for health care services in federally financed health coverage programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. The paper also looks at the mechanics of waivers as well as their history and political context in shaping public programs. In addition, it explores the ways the changing state-federal relationship and the ever-growing demand for state flexibility have driven waiver policy.

Parameter Estimation For Distributed Delay Based Population Models From Laboratory Data: Egg Hatching Of Oulema Duftschmidi Redthenbacher (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) As An Example, Maurizio Severini, Johann Baumgärtner, Lidia Limonta Sep 2003

Parameter Estimation For Distributed Delay Based Population Models From Laboratory Data: Egg Hatching Of Oulema Duftschmidi Redthenbacher (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) As An Example, Maurizio Severini, Johann Baumgärtner, Lidia Limonta

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The cohort development of poikilotherms under favorable temperature conditions may be described by the time-invariant distributed delay models that require three parameters, i.e. the thermal threshold T0, the thermal constant W and the variability parameter H representing distributed maturation times, also known as time distributed or stochastic development. Here, a parsimonious method is developed that uses stage-frequency matrices obtained under controlled conditions. The analysis of these matrices permits the estimation of the three parameters, while the incorporation of both developmental threshold and thermal constant into the time-invariant distributed delay model permits the representation of stochastic cohort development under constant temperatures. …

The Call To Play, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta, Karl Hostetler Sep 2003

The Call To Play, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta, Karl Hostetler

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This article explores the nature of play and its presence and potential in teaching and learning encounters. Play is portrayed as a movement that can characterize the process of learning and teachers’ reflections on their practice. The exercise of techne and phronesis are found to be key but problematic elements in this movement. The paper is in the form of a conversation, a medium calling the authors themselves to play with the play that might occur in classrooms. Thus, the authors’ play is itself a subject for inquiry. Their interplay warrants considering play to be an elemental activity for reconceptualizing …

Nesting Biology And Use Of Upland Cover By Waterfowl And American Bitterns (Botaurus Lentiginosus) On A Cultivated Wild Rice Farm., Casey Lyn Armour Sep 2003

Nesting Biology And Use Of Upland Cover By Waterfowl And American Bitterns (Botaurus Lentiginosus) On A Cultivated Wild Rice Farm., Casey Lyn Armour

Theses and Dissertations

Habitat loss from human settlement and intensified farming has brought about a rapid loss of grassland and wetland habitats. Cultivated wild rice (Zizania palustris) paddies and associated uplands could help counteract this loss of habitat by providing nesting and feeding habitat for a variety of wildlife. Waterfowl have been the focus of many management activities designed to combat habitat loss. Although it is generally believed that the overall effects of waterfowl habitat management and enhancement are beneficial to other game and non-game birds, many direct effects have not been investigated. The objectives of this study were to examine the use …
