Transformative Explanations: Writing To Overcome Counterintuitive Ideas, Joye C. Gordon
Transformative Explanations: Writing To Overcome Counterintuitive Ideas, Joye C. Gordon
Journal of Extension
This article presents a five-step writing tool, called "transformative explanation," that provides a proven mechanism to promote acceptance of hard-to-understand concepts. When Extension messages present counterintuitive information, message consumers are psychologically motivated to reject the proposition and retain previous understandings. Because gaining perceptual compliance is often a prerequisite to other communication objectives, transformative explanations provide an important tool for message designers.

Hookworm infection is one of the most important parasitic infections of humans, possibly outranked only by malaria as a cause of misery and suffering. An estimated 1.2 billion people are infected with hookworm in areas of rural poverty in the tropics and subtropics. Epidemiological data collected in China, Southeast Asia, and Brazil indicate that, unlike other soil-transmitted helminth infections, the highest hookworm burdens typically occur in adult populations, including the elderly. Emerging data on the host cellular immune responses of chronically infected populations suggest that hookworms induce a state of host anergy and immune hyporesponsiveness. These features account for the …

Dually Eligible For Medicare And Medicaid: Two For One Or Double Jeopardy?, Jennifer Ryan, Nora Super
National Health Policy Forum
This issue brief describes the characteristics of the population of individuals known as “dual eligibles,” who are eligible for health insurance coverage through both Medicare and Medicaid. It also looks at the differences between “full Medicaid” and “supplemental Medicaid” dual eligibles and the ongoing challenges associated with enrollment and eligibility, integration and coordination, and managed care. The paper presents several examples of integrated care programs designed to better serve the dual-eligible population, including the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, Evercare, social health maintenance organizations, and state/federal initiatives such as the Wisconsin Partnership Program, Texas STAR+PLUS, and others. Finally, …

Stochastic Models Based On Molecular Hybridization Theory For Short Oligonucleotide Microarrays, Zhijin Wu, Richard Leblanc, Rafael A. Irizarry
Stochastic Models Based On Molecular Hybridization Theory For Short Oligonucleotide Microarrays, Zhijin Wu, Richard Leblanc, Rafael A. Irizarry
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
High density oligonucleotide expression arrays are a widely used tool for the measurement of gene expression on a large scale. Affymetrix GeneChip arrays appear to dominate this market. These arrays use short oligonucleotides to probe for genes in an RNA sample. Due to optical noise, non-specific hybridization, probe-specific effects, and measurement error, ad-hoc measures of expression, that summarize probe intensities, can lead to imprecise and inaccurate results. Various researchers have demonstrated that expression measures based on simple statistical models can provide great improvements over the ad-hoc procedure offered by Affymetrix. Recently, physical models based on molecular hybridization theory, have been …
