The Rebirth Of Bioethics: Extending The Original Formulations Of Van Rensselaer Potter, Peter J. Whitehouse Dec 2003

The Rebirth Of Bioethics: Extending The Original Formulations Of Van Rensselaer Potter, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

Van Rensselaer Potter's original concept of bioethics as a global integration of biology and values was designed to guide human survival. His attention to the creation of human knowledge and the incorporation of ecological concepts and values into medicine and health remain important, yet largely neglected, contributions deserving of further elaboration. Bioethicists should heed his warning about unsustainable progress, particularly in health care systems, and work toward changing their behaviors. Incorporating life-affirming spiritual values and extending Potter's global bioethics to a deeper bioethics seem essential.

Effects Of Early Acoustic Stimulation On Prepulse Inhibition In Mice, Lisa Tanner Dec 2003

Effects Of Early Acoustic Stimulation On Prepulse Inhibition In Mice, Lisa Tanner

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of an atypical pattern of early acoustic stimulation on auditory development. Previous human research suggests that the acoustic environment of pre-term human infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) negatively affects some aspects of auditory development. Animal research suggests that premature auditory stimulation interrupts auditory development. Because mice are born before their auditory systems are developed, they make an excellent model for research on fetal and postnatal plasticity of the auditory system. The premature auditory state of newborn mice is similar to that of the NICU pre-term infant, albeit, …

Loss-Based Estimation With Cross-Validation: Applications To Microarray Data Analysis And Motif Finding, Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sunduz Keles, Annette M. Molinaro, Sandra E. Sinisi, Siew Leng Teng Dec 2003

Loss-Based Estimation With Cross-Validation: Applications To Microarray Data Analysis And Motif Finding, Sandrine Dudoit, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Sunduz Keles, Annette M. Molinaro, Sandra E. Sinisi, Siew Leng Teng

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Current statistical inference problems in genomic data analysis involve parameter estimation for high-dimensional multivariate distributions, with typically unknown and intricate correlation patterns among variables. Addressing these inference questions satisfactorily requires: (i) an intensive and thorough search of the parameter space to generate good candidate estimators, (ii) an approach for selecting an optimal estimator among these candidates, and (iii) a method for reliably assessing the performance of the resulting estimator. We propose a unified loss-based methodology for estimator construction, selection, and performance assessment with cross-validation. In this approach, the parameter of interest is defined as the risk minimizer for a suitable …
