Selected Chemoautotrophic Processes In Wastewater Treatment: Low Temperature Nitrification Inhibition By An Azo Dye And Biofiltration For Odor Control Of Hydrogen Sulfide, Ronald W. Martin Jr. Jan 2003

Selected Chemoautotrophic Processes In Wastewater Treatment: Low Temperature Nitrification Inhibition By An Azo Dye And Biofiltration For Odor Control Of Hydrogen Sulfide, Ronald W. Martin Jr.

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Biochemical processes by chemoautotrophs such as nitrifiers and sulfide and iron oxidizers are used extensively in wastewater treatment. The research described in this dissertation involved the study of two selected biological processes utilized in wastewater treatment mediated by chemoautotrophic bacteria: nitrification (biological removal of ammonia and nitrogen) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal from odorous air using biofiltration.

A municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) receiving industrial dyeing discharge containing the azo dye, acid black 1 (AB1) failed to meet discharge limits, especially during the winter. Dyeing discharge mixed with domestic sewage was fed to sequencing batch reactors at 22oC and 7oC. …

The Nexus Between Housing And The Macro Economy : Hong Kong As A Case Study, Lok Sang Ho, Wai Chung, Gary Wong Jan 2003

The Nexus Between Housing And The Macro Economy : Hong Kong As A Case Study, Lok Sang Ho, Wai Chung, Gary Wong

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

This paper presents the theory and the evidence showing the close relationship between the performance of the macroeconomy and housing. Focusing on the Hong Kong experience, it is found that exports and the interest rate were two key variables that can explain the movement of housing prices over a long period. A structural break is identified in the first quarter of 1998. Using the cointegration framework, the paper highlights the importance of housing to both the economic health of the domestic sector and the fiscal health of the economy.

An Exploratory Study Of Older Persons' Computer And Internet Usage In Hong Kong, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, David Rosser Phillips, Meng Soi, Florence Fong

APIAS Monograph 專題論文

Computer usage and internet access for older persons have been increasingly emphasized in Hong Kong, particularly as a live access tool for keeping frequent contacts with the outside world and the applicability in online medical consultation for those who are frail and isolated. But how are these computer communication technologies being used among the older persons? The question has not been much explored. Hence, this study aims, as a first step, to find out the profiles of older persons using computer aided communications including internet and e-mails. The objectives of the present study are to:

  1. measure the proportion of older …

Education Reform In Hk : The Ideal Versus The Reality About Competition, Lok Sang Ho Jan 2003

Education Reform In Hk : The Ideal Versus The Reality About Competition, Lok Sang Ho

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

This paper argues that the stumbling block to effective education reform in Hong Kong is a misguided philosophy that wrongly puts the blame on examinations as the source of anxiety and distortion of the education process, when in fact it is “the musical chair game” set-up that pervades the education system from primary school through universities, that is distorting the entire education process.

An Amenity Assessment Model For Evaluating State Park Tourism Assets, James D. Bigley, Larry Mutter

Visions in Leisure and Business

Creative, quick and inexpensive assessment models based on sound methods that yield practical applications can be of great utility to the administrators of both public and private sector outdoor recreation resources in their decision-making tasks. This paper presents a case study on the development of a tourism amenity assessment model designed for application to state and regional parks and historic sites. The five-step process utilized in developing and applying the model is discussed. The findings yielded as a result of application of the model to state parks in southeastern Georgia (USA) are enumerated, and the recommendations made to Georgia Department …

Baseball Card Pricing Model: A Demonstration With Well-Known Players, Robert F. Mulligan, A. J. Grube, Stephen B. Jarrell

Visions in Leisure and Business

A simple hedonic pricing model is developed for baseball cards, of the type often used successfully to model prices for artworks. The model is estimated for a dataset of twelve well-known players observed at eight points in time over a span of twenty years. Dummy variables are used to capture various relevant characteristics of the player or card. This model was estimated separately for two different approaches or assumptions about rates of return. Estimates perform extremely well, explaining most differences among baseball card prices for the cards in the sample. Among extrinsic variables that represent specific players and card characteristics …

One Hundred Years From Today, Gregory C G Moore

Business Papers and Journal Articles

William James Ashley (1860-1927) was one of the leading historical economists of his generation and, along with Archdeacon William Cunningham and William Albert Hewins, he was instrumental in harnessing historicist principles to support the corporatist-cum-protectionist movement that grew to prominence in the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods. Ashley's influence on the formation of policy within this movement reached its peak with the publication in 1903 of The Tariff Problem, which was issued shortly after the mercurial Joseph Chamberlain launched his political campaign to reintroduce a tariff structure in Great Britain.

Cancer in Louisiana

Beginning with 1999 cancer incidence data, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services adopted the 2000 U.S. standard population for age adjustment. Therefore, the age-adjusted rates presented in this report are adjusted to the new 2000 U.S. standard population, and caution should be used when comparing data with previously published cancer incidence rates that were adjusted to the 1970 U.S. standard population.

Project on Addressing Prison Rape - Articles

This article addresses these arguments and ultimately concludes that same-sex supervision should be adopted in U.S. prisons in supervising both male and female prisoners. First, while same-sex supervision may not prevent sexual misconduct, it may reduce it by cutting off a primary vector of sexual misconduct-cross-gender interactions between staff and inmates. Second, same-sex supervision may increase prisoner well-being by giving prisoners a greater sense of control over their bodies, thereby reducing their sense of vulnerability to abuse. Finally, adopting same-sex supervision policies would make the United States' position more congruent with international standards for the treatment of prisoners.
