Do Public Expenditures Improve Child Outcomes In The U.S.? A Comparison Across Fifty States, Kristen Harknett, Irwin Garfinkel, Jay Bainbridge, Timothy Smeeding
Center for Policy Research
Our paper utilizes variation across the 50 U.S. states to examine the relationship between public expenditures on children and child outcomes. We find that public expenditures on children are related to better child outcomes across a wide range of indicators, including measures of child mortality, elementary-school test scores, and adolescent behavioral outcomes. States that spend more on children have better child outcomes even after taking into account potential confounding influences. Our results are robust to numerous variations in model specifications and to the inclusion of proxies for unobserved characteristics of states. Our sensitivity analyses suggest that the results we present …
Bioavailability Of The Tea Flavonoids Epicatechin And Epicatechin Gallate: Role Of Membrane Transport And Metabolism, Jaya Bharathi Vaidyanathan
Bioavailability Of The Tea Flavonoids Epicatechin And Epicatechin Gallate: Role Of Membrane Transport And Metabolism, Jaya Bharathi Vaidyanathan
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Tea flavonoids, including (-)-epicatechin (EC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECG), (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) have been shown to have chemopreventive activity in cancer. Studies in animals and humans suggest that these dietary compounds have a very low oral bioavailability. However, the reason behind this limited bioavailability as well as the mechanisms underlying absorption is not clearly understood. The overall hypothesis of this dissertation project is that the human intestinal absorption of (-)-epicatechin (EC) and its gallate, (-)epicatechin- 3-gallate (ECG) is limited and regulated both by multiple transport mechanisms and metabolism. We used the Caco-2 cell monolayers, a well-established model to …

Seeing Beyond The Habitus - On Action, Art And Healing, Tarquam Mckenna
'INSCAPE' - ARTCAP November 13-16, 2003
This paper is written as a conversation had at the ARTCAP Symposium in Perth 2003. It was a conversation that alluded to the imaginal realm and action art therapy as a way into understanding. It is offered as a spoken comment to bring voice to the reader. The format of the paper is such that the reader is encouraged to see it as a series of statements that are a conversation between a group of people. The paper begs questions which are still unanswered.
On Defining At-Risk: The Role Of Educational Ritual In Constructions Of Success And Failure, Deanna L. Fassett
On Defining At-Risk: The Role Of Educational Ritual In Constructions Of Success And Failure, Deanna L. Fassett
Basic Communication Course Annual
By adopting an ethnomethodological approach to the analysis of focus group interviews with undergraduate students enrolled in and teachers of the introductory course in speech communication, this essay demonstrates that we understand to be a stable, objective aspect of reality--i.e., the inevitability of educational failure--is in fact a human accomplishment, the result of concerted, through unreflective, social action. This paper explores the ways in which students' and graduate teaching assistants' espousal of educational rituals may create and sustain their (or their students') risk of educational failure. Futhermore, the implications of such a perspective for graduate teaching assistants of the basic …

Emotional Intelligence Competencies In Physician Leaders: An Exploratory Study, Michael J. Deegan
Emotional Intelligence Competencies In Physician Leaders: An Exploratory Study, Michael J. Deegan
Student Scholarship
A theory of behavioral competencies associated with emotional intelligence that influence job performance, was tested in physicians who hold leadership positions in their organization. An emotional intelligence competency ( EIC ) survey ( the ECI-2 ) that measured eighteen competencies distributed among four cluster groups ( self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship management ) was administered to physician leaders and their supervisors, peers and direct reports. The resulting 360 degree assessment permitted a comparison of the physician leaders self assessment scores with one another and those working closely with them. In addition, independent objective and subjective measures of physician …

Women Of Color-What Their Voices Teach Us, Jacqueline Mertz
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that white feminists must learn from the experiences of women of color to build a more inclusive and effective feminist movement. It emphasizes the importance of addressing the multiple oppressions faced by women of color, including racism, sexism, and national oppression, and critiques the historical failure of the white feminist movement to support women of color.
The Law Is Straight And Narrow, How American Courts Define Families, Elisa Laird
The Law Is Straight And Narrow, How American Courts Define Families, Elisa Laird
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article argues that American law is inherently biased toward traditional heterosexual family structures, creating significant barriers for same-sex couples and non-traditional families seeking legal recognition and rights. The legal system's "straight and narrow" framework often excludes these families from accessing benefits and protections granted to heterosexual families, reflecting deeply entrenched religious and historical influences.
Invisible Targets: Juvenile Prostitution, Crackdown Legislation, And The Example Of California, Pantea Javidan
Invisible Targets: Juvenile Prostitution, Crackdown Legislation, And The Example Of California, Pantea Javidan
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article examines the contradiction in California's legal framework where minors are criminalized for prostitution under California Penal Code section 647(b), despite being legally incapable of consenting to sex. It argues that such laws fail to protect child prostitutes, who are often victims of exploitation, and instead perpetuate their harm by punishing them rather than addressing the root causes of their situation.
The Silencing Of A Woman's Choice: Mandatory Arrest And No Drop Prosecution Policies In Domestic Violence Cases, Jessica Dayton
The Silencing Of A Woman's Choice: Mandatory Arrest And No Drop Prosecution Policies In Domestic Violence Cases, Jessica Dayton
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article critiques mandatory arrest and no-drop prosecution policies in domestic violence cases, arguing that these policies undermine the autonomy of women by taking away their right to make decisions about their own safety and legal actions. The author advocates for a more flexible, victim-centered approach that respects each woman's unique circumstances and empowers her to make informed choices.
Images Of Women Lawyers: Over-Representation Of Their Femininity In Media, Victoria Alexeeva
Images Of Women Lawyers: Over-Representation Of Their Femininity In Media, Victoria Alexeeva
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The article critiques the portrayal of women lawyers in the media, particularly through the character Ally McBeal, arguing that her depiction overemphasizes femininity and emotional instability, perpetuating harmful stereotypes that undermine the progress of women in the legal profession.

From Genes, Marriage And Money To Nurture: Redefining Fatherhood, Nancy E. Dowd
From Genes, Marriage And Money To Nurture: Redefining Fatherhood, Nancy E. Dowd
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The essay argues that fatherhood should be redefined based on nurturing actions rather than genetic or marital status. It critiques the increasing reliance on genetic ties for legal definitions and advocates for a shift towards recognizing fatherhood through active caregiving and emotional support, emphasizing the importance of nurturing over economic roles.
Proposing An Amendment To Article 81 To Allow Invalidation Of Wills As Part Of, Or Subsequent To, A Proceeding For Appointment Of A Guardian, Jody Saltzman
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines the legal challenges surrounding the revocation of Wills and Powers of Attorney, particularly in cases involving individuals with dementia. It argues that current legal frameworks, such as New York's postmortem probate system, often fail to address issues of testamentary capacity and undue influence effectively. The analysis highlights the significance of the In re Ruby Slater case, which demonstrates the potential benefits of allowing Will revocations under Article 81 guardianship proceedings. The note advocates for legal reforms to improve the handling of such cases, ensuring greater certainty for testators and protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation.

Augusto Boal's Theatre Of The Oppressed In The Public Speaking And Interpersonal Communication Classrooms, Jacqueline D. Burleson
Augusto Boal's Theatre Of The Oppressed In The Public Speaking And Interpersonal Communication Classrooms, Jacqueline D. Burleson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this study, I document and analyze how I applied Boal's Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) techniques in introductory Public Speaking and Interpersonal Communication (IPC) courses. In the first chapter, Boal's democratic praxis is discussed in terms of critical performance pedagogy and Brecht's social aesthetics. I identify the qualitative social scientific method of data collection and analysis I used and base the significance of the study in my testing of TO in non-performance educational contexts and in the integrated communication studies curricula that resulted. In Chapter Two, I summarize Boal's career as an interactive theatre practitioner. My review includes synopses …
Rainfall-Runoff Control: Variably Saturated Transport For An Infiltration System Controlling Water Quality And Quantity, Zheng Teng
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Rainfall-runoff impacted by anthropogenic activities transports significant quantities of particulate, aqueous and complexed constituents. These diffuse, unsteady and stochastic event-based loadings are unique challenges for water quality and quantity control. The design, water quality and quantity functions of a partial exfiltration reactor (PER) utilizing Fe-coated-sand and porous pavement (CPP) is examined specifically across three representative rainfall-runoff events. Total concentrations and mass for metals (Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd), suspended solids, and Chemical oxygen demand were reduced significantly. Rainfall-runoff volume and peak flow were reduced and time to peak was extended. Influent dm/dp ratios based on particle analyses suggest that the …

"Magic City" Class, Community, And Reform In Roanoke, Virginia, 1882-1912, Paul R. Dotson, Jr.
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The "Magic City" of Roanoke, Virginia, the fastest growing urban area in the South from 1880 to 1890, exemplified everything that New South boosters claimed to have wanted. The prototypical New South city, Roanoke emerged as an extreme version of all that was supposed to remedy the South's post-Civil War economic stagnation. The city's promise, however, revealed the empty promise of the New South. Despite intensive demographic and industrial growth, by the early twentieth century, Roanoke failed to evolve into the dynamic and modern city prophesied by New South visionaries. Its abysmal conditions, racial turmoil, class conflicts, and superficial "reforms" …
The Novelty Of Improvisation: Towards A Genre Of Embodied Spontaneity, David Alfred Charles
The Novelty Of Improvisation: Towards A Genre Of Embodied Spontaneity, David Alfred Charles
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Improvisation has often been viewed and valued in terms of its service and resemblance to scripted traditions of theatre. Such a stance seriously undermines the significance and impact of this global performance modality, and has resulted in improvisatory modes being largely ignored or downplayed in modern historical accounts of theatre. This dissertation examines improvisation on its own terms, seeking to understand its unique features, functions and potentials, while freeing it from the heavy shadow of its scripted counterpart. To this end, the theories of literary critic, Mikhail Bakhtin, provide important methodological guideposts and allow the silhouette of the improvisational impetus …
