Health Risks From Exposure To Metal-Working Fluids In Machining And Grinding Operations, Kun Li, Fereydoun Aghazadeh, Selen Hatipkarasulu, Thomas G. Ray Jan 2003

Health Risks From Exposure To Metal-Working Fluids In Machining And Grinding Operations, Kun Li, Fereydoun Aghazadeh, Selen Hatipkarasulu, Thomas G. Ray

Faculty Publications

Metal-working fluids (MWFs) are used in machining and grinding operations to cool the tool and work, reduce the friction between the tool and work, improve the surface integrity of the work piece, and increase tool life and productivity. Health problems have been reported among workers exposed to MWFs, including incidences of respiratory, digestive and skin cancers, and increased rates of cough and phlegm. This paper reviews and discusses issues concerning health risks from exposure to MWFs in machining and grinding operations, the various factors that influence the degree of exposure, and control methods to reduce exposure to metal-working fluids. © …

The Harms Of Child Pornography Law, Bruce Ryder Jan 2003

The Harms Of Child Pornography Law, Bruce Ryder

Articles & Book Chapters

The author challenges the assumption that the expansion of child pornography offenses can lead only to a decrease in harm to children and to society. He argues that Canadian child pornography law is incoherent. In some respects, child pornography law makes valuable contributions to the prevention of child sexual abuse by targeting the production, dissemination and use of material ("real" child pornography) that involved harm in production. It also improves the law by criminalizing written and visual material that advocates the commission of sexual crimes against children and youth. In other respects, the law causes harm to society by suppressing …

Bringing Oversight Review In Line With Online Research, Stephen J. Lilley Jan 2003

Bringing Oversight Review In Line With Online Research, Stephen J. Lilley

Sociology Faculty Publications

The purpose of an oversight structure or institution is to protect human subjects from research that would pose unacceptable dangers or deny human rights. Review boards provide an independent assessment of research proposals. This additional level of scrutiny is meant to provide an additional level of protection for human subjects. However, oversight of human subject research, as currently carried out in the bureaucratic, rule-based, clinically-biased American system, is too cumbersome with regard to online research. In addition, it is not conducive to the training of ethical Internet researchers. Internet research differs from traditional human subject research in many ways, and …

The Redox Potential Of Ddt: An Environmental Perspective, Anne Lewis, Christopher Cramer, John Bumpus Jan 2003

The Redox Potential Of Ddt: An Environmental Perspective, Anne Lewis, Christopher Cramer, John Bumpus

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Due to their low water solubility, the reduction potentials of DDT and dicofol are difficult to determine experimentally. Through computational methods, we calculated the one and two electron reduction potentials for DDT as 0.51 V and 0.67 V, respectively, and those for dicofol were 0.50 V and 0.74 V. This study is significant because we are able to calculate reliable redox potentials that may be utilized to predict chemical behavior and degradation pathways of environmental pollutants. To assess the accuracy of theoretical chemistry, we compared experimental and computational data and examined whether our calculated redox potentials fit with the known …

Obtaining Attorney Fees In Actions Against Insurers, Greg Munro Jan 2003

Obtaining Attorney Fees In Actions Against Insurers, Greg Munro

Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings

This article reviews the law regarding awards of attorney fees in cases against insurance companies by insurance consumers or third-party claimants as developed by the Montana Supreme Court. The article outlines the Court's significant remedial body of law that can be used to obtain attorney fees and costs in cases where civil litigation has been necessary to secure the insurance benefit. The article concludes that the continued development of the remedy of attorney fees in such cases will help resolve the problem of insurers denying claims based on the simple economics of saving money by failing to pay claims and …

Diversity And Community Structure Of Littoral Zone Macroinvertebrates In Southern Illinois Reclaimed Surface Mine Lakes, Thomas Heatherly Ii Jan 2003

Diversity And Community Structure Of Littoral Zone Macroinvertebrates In Southern Illinois Reclaimed Surface Mine Lakes, Thomas Heatherly Ii

Honors Theses

I sampled fourteen reclaimed surface mine lakes within the Sparta Illinois National Guard training facility for benthic macroinvertebrates in spring of 2003 as part of an overall environmental assessment of the property. The objectives of this research were: (1) to inventory the aquatic macroinvertebrates present; (2) to evaluate the current quality of the aquatic habitats so that the effects of subsequent management and development by the National Guard can be assessed; (3) examine which factors influence invertebrate community structure in these systems; and (4) observe the applicability of several commonly used stream bioassessment metrics to Midwestern surface mine lakes. A …

Holistic, Preventative, And Alternative Medicine As Incorporated In Today's U.S. Medical School And Medical Practices, Marcelle Beall

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This research explored not only the role of alternative medical programs in allopathic medical schools but also examined the attitudes of physicians in both areas of health care. Twenty-three physicians, about half of whom were MDs and half who were DOs, were interviewed. Additionally, visits were made to three osteopathic medical schools to tour their facilities, interview personnel, and study their curricula. The similarities and differences in allopathic and osteopathic medicine were then assessed.

Wage Work And Marriage: Perspectives Of Egyptian Working Women, Sajeda Amin, Nagah Hassan Al Bassusi Jan 2003

Wage Work And Marriage: Perspectives Of Egyptian Working Women, Sajeda Amin, Nagah Hassan Al Bassusi

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This paper explores young working women’s perceptions of marriage and work in contemporary Egypt at a time when an increase in age at marriage was evident from national survey data. Data from two nationally representative labor surveys, the Labor Force Sample Survey of 1988 and the Egypt Labor Market Survey of 1998, show that working conditions and employment opportunities declined significantly for young women even as their educational attainment increased. Indepth interviews were conducted with young women working in a range of salaried jobs in three locations: a rural village in Mansoura, a periurban district near Cairo, and in the …
