Dog guides can be one such mobility aid, and currently there are ten facilities in the United States that are members of the United States Council of Dog Guide Schools, and train dog guides to assist people with a visual impairment. In this paper each school will be briefly described, and similarities and differences between the schools' application process, breeding practice, puppy raisers, and formal training will be discussed. Morroco In Transition: Overcoming The Democratic And Human Rights Legacy Of King Hassan Ii, Patricia J. Campbell

Benerd College Faculty Articles

Morocco’s King Hassan II died on 23 July 1999 and was succeeded by his son Muhammad VI. Much of the media coverage of Hassan II following his death portrayed him as a champion of democracy and human rights in the region. Was this really the case? Was Morocco under Hassan II becoming a more democratic and open society? This paper critically examines King Hassan’s legacy, challenges and opportunities it poses for his heir Muhammad VI. The paper also discusses Morocco’s prospects for democratic deepening under the new leader.

Species Distribution And Antibiotic Resistance Of Shigella Isolates In An Urban Community In Malaysia, W.S. Lee, S.D. Puthucheary

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

There is an increasing trend for Shigella isolates worldwide to be resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics. The species distribution and antibiotic resistance of Shigella species isolated from children in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 1978 to 1997 was reviewed. Three hundred and eighty six isolates were positive for Shigella species, representing 1.4 (95 CI: 1.3-1.6) of the 26320 total stool specimens and 13 (95 CI: 11.8-14.2) of 2986 isolates positive for bacterial pathogens. Shigella flexneri, constituting 74 of all isolates in the first five years of the study, decreased by 40 during the last five years (95 CI of decrease: 22.1-57.9), …

Tuberculosis In Aids Patients, V. Nissapatorn, C. Lee, I. Ithoi, M.Y. Fong, K.A. Abdullah

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

Tuberculosis is the top agenda among opportunistic diseases and the most leading cause of death in HIV/AIDS patients. A total of 406 AIDS patients were recruited in this retrospective and descriptive study. 123/406 (30.3) were diagnosed as AIDS-related tuberculosis (TB). Their age range from 17 to 69 years with a mean (±SD) of 37.2 (±9.51. There were significant association between occupation, or mode of HIV transmission and tuberculosis infection (p< 0.05). Pulmonary tuberculosis 104/123 (84.6) was the most common disease location among TB patients. We found the significant association between the clinical presentations i.e. fever, cough, sputum or hemoptysis and TB patients (p<0.05), moreover, the level of CD4 cell count plays a significant role in association with the disease (p<0.05) in this study.

[Review Of] Catherine Ceniza Choy. Empire Of Care: Nursing And Migration In Filipino American History, Cecilia G. Manrique Jan 2003

[Review Of] Catherine Ceniza Choy. Empire Of Care: Nursing And Migration In Filipino American History, Cecilia G. Manrique

Ethnic Studies Review

This book takes a look at the topic of the twentieth-century migration of Filipinos to the United States and focuses specifically on those migrants in the nursing profession. Whether one agrees with the author or not, the basic premise of the piece is that an international Filipino professional nurse labor force has been created due to the historical demands of U.S. imperialism. This re-examination of the history of the role of nursing in U.S. colonialism shows that not all immigrants readily assimilate into American society and that the racialization of Filipinos in the United States continually takes place.

Freedom Of Speech And The Language Of Architecture, Kevin G. Gill Jan 2003

Freedom Of Speech And The Language Of Architecture, Kevin G. Gill

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, in Bear Run, Pennsylvania, is a celebrated architectural masterpiece of groundbreaking vision and design ingenuity. Today unfortunately, in many municipalities, strict design controls prevent architects from designing such visionary work. These controls preclude buildings that do not mimic a certain architectural style, or otherwise conform to the neighborhood. They are promulgated on notions of community harmony; the argument is made that unconventional architectural design is somehow discordant and will adversely affect property values.

Architecture has been called humanity's greatest form of expression. Architecture can be a physical expression of philosophical, religious, political, and aesthetic ideas and …

Faculty Publications - College of Physical Therapy

Study Design: Case report.

Objective: To describe the knee kinematics and moments of a giving-way trial of a subject with an anterior-cruciate-ligament– (ACL) deficient knee relative to his non–giving-way trials and to healthy subjects during a step-down task.

Background: Episodes of giving way are believed to damage joint structures, therefore treatments aim to prevent giving-way episodes, yet few studies document giving-way events.

Methods: The giving-way trial experienced by a 32-year-old male subject with ACL deficiency during a step-down task was compared to his non–giving-way trials (n = 5) and data from healthy subjects (n = 20). Position data collected at …
