Decisions To Appeal, Decisions To Approve: Requalification For Ssi By Former Da&A Beneficiaries, Richard Scott, Jim Baumohl

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship

Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Drug Addiction and Alcoholism (DA&A) benefits had the opportunity to appeal their termination during the six months prior to the end of the DA&A program in January 1997. In this study, we examined factors that affected transition from the DA&A program to continuing SSI benefits based on other qualifying impairments. We treated requalification for SSI as the outcome of two processes: a beneficiary's submission of a request for reconsideration and the Social Security Administration's (SSA) Disability Determination Services' efforts to document a qualifying impairment, culminating in a decision to approve or to deny the …

This article examines the events of 9/11, and the potential resultant shifts in attitude, policies, and laws in the United States, through the lens of civil rights extended to gay and lesbian citizens. It seeks, but does not purport to definitively discover, the true meaning of the phrase "life will never be the same." It asks, but does not purport to fully answer, whether historians a century or two hence will look back on 9/11 as the turning point when the United States began to fulfill its promise of liberty to all people, or whether this date will be earmarked …

The Prospective Process Through Scenario Thinking For The Built And Human Environment: A Tool For Exploring Urban Futures, John Ratcliffe, Lorcan Sirr

Articles

We are currently living through an era where we can, and need to, create exciting new possibilities in the way we think about, plan, design and build new places and spaces for working and living. At the same time, two irresistible forces – change and complexity – face decision-makers charged with framing and executing future policy and practice for the built and human environment. This paper generally argues the case for employing a ‘prospective’ process through scenario thinking for strategic planning and management in the urban arena. It does not attempt to identify or explore the advances made in planning …

What is the mechanism by which this mutual influence can occur? What does the university offer the community, and what does the community offer the university? The short answer is--the opportunity to learn in the company of others in a situation where learning has consequences.

Global Government Networks, Global Information Agencies, And Disaggregated Democracy, Anne-Marie Slaughter

Michigan Journal of International Law

This essay seeks to broaden our understanding of government networks by placing them in more historical context and by elaborating different types of government networks within and without traditional international institutions. After a brief overview of the literature on transgovernmentalism since the 1970s in Part I, Part H sets forth a typology of three different categories of government networks. Part III then seeks to pinpoint the specific accountability concerns associated with each type. Part IV offers one approach to answering some current accountability concerns by adapting the concept of "information agencies" from the European Union to the global level. This …

Is Ageism Alive In Date Selection Among Men? Age Requests Among Gay And Straight Men In Internet Personal Ads, Gayle Kaufman, Voonchin Phua

Sociology Faculty Publications

We examine 2,400 personal ads from male advertisers collected from the Internet, focusing on age preference by race and sexual orientation. We look at whether advertisers display any age preference in personal ads and whether the preference varies by race and sexual orientation. We find that gay men are more likely than straight men to state an age preference. Also, the preference for younger partners intensified among the older advertisers regardless of race and sexual orientation. Youth is still a treasured commodity in date selection for men. However, some men, especially gay men, prefer more mature partners. At least 20 …

The Judicial Disabling Of The Employment Discrimination Provisions Of The Americans With Disabilities Act, Charles B. Craver

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article explores a series of Supreme Court decisions making it more difficult for disabled individuals to assert rights under the employment discrimination provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Court further held that persons will only be considered disabled if they have conditions that severely limit them with respect to a major life activity. …

Igbo Folk Idioms In Caribbean Phrase, Chukwuma Azuonye

Africana Studies Faculty Publication Series

This paper analyses a corpus of phrases from Jamaican and other Caribbean folk speech with a view to ascertaing their possible Igbo provenance. There seems to be an overwhelming match in terms of morphology and meaning between these Jamaican phrases and some common Igbo idioms. It is however worthy of note that the matching of Igbo and Caribbean or Black American idioms, no matter how persuasive the results may be, cannot produce conclusive evidence of Igbo presence in any particular area or among any particular population sample. Studies of mother-tongue interference in various African Englishes and comparative studies of the …

Law, Culture, And Family: The Transformative Power Of Culture And The Limits Of Law, Nancy E. Dowd Jan 2003

Law, Culture, And Family: The Transformative Power Of Culture And The Limits Of Law, Nancy E. Dowd

UF Law Faculty Publications

Law inevitably is involved in the resolution of cultural conflicts. Nonintervention acts as powerfully as intervention; in either case, law is a powerful actor in its role as a part of cultural dialogue, as well as in its role as a coercive force. Law is never neutral in my view. If it “stays out” of a situation, then it is complicit in the status quo or in permitting the conflict to be resolved without legal intervention, which may weight the outcome in a particular direction. If law “comes in,” it similarly “sides” with a particular position because, in part, our …

Coaches' Liability For Athletes' Injuries And Deaths, Thomas R. Hurst, James N. Knight Jan 2003

Coaches' Liability For Athletes' Injuries And Deaths, Thomas R. Hurst, James N. Knight

UF Law Faculty Publications

In the brutally hot summer of 2001, three prominent athletes lost their lives on playing fields across the country. Football players Korey Stringer of the Minnesota Vikings,' Rashidi Wheeler of Northwestern University, and Eraste Autin of the University Florida collapsed and died in summer practices. These practices are an annual rite that has preceded each football season since the sport was conceived approximately ninety years ago. While these deaths are tragic, they are certainly not uncommon. Since 1995, eighteen high school and collegiate football players have died while participating in practices or games. In America's litigious society, these deaths raise …
