Christian Scholarship...For What?, Susan Felch, Joel A. Carpenter, John Hare, Elizabeth Conde-Frazier, John Polkinghorne, Tite Tienou, Marilynne Robinson, Richard Mouw

Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship

On September 27-29, 2001 Calvin College concluded its 125th anniversary celebrations with an international, interdisciplinary conference centered on the topic, "Christian Scholarship ... for What?" The title, a variation on Robert Lynds provocative address to the American social science establishment in 1938, acknowledged that faith-based scholarship has come of age. It is no longer a question of whether we will produce, publish, and read Christian scholarship. Rather, we must turn our attention to improving such scholarship and thinking deeply about the purposes to which it is directed. The conference, with its seven plenary and forty-seven concurrent sessions, attracted nearly 500 …

Multicultural Assessment: Research, Training, And Practice, Richard H. Dana Jan 2003

Multicultural Assessment: Research, Training, And Practice, Richard H. Dana

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

The credibility of standard assessment has been questioned by intra-professional debate, diminished by training deficits, redefined as semi-skilled technology by managed care, and compromised for multicultural populations by research bias. Scientific psychology has been responsible for perpetuation of bias and the limited generality of published ethnic minority research. A constructive response to these issues includes more coherent scientific preparation for assessment practice, particularly with ethnic minority populations. Adequate preparation entails careful reformulation of assumptions, redefinition of variables, informed selection of research methodologies, understanding deficiencies in normative data, and using culturally responsible interpretive strategies with standard test data in addition to …

The Rambus Shell Game: A Lack Of Integrity In The Standards Setting Process, 3 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 138 (2003), David Adam Dorth

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Standards setting organizations are formed to promulgate industry standards and in turn manage the course of technology that falls within their particular niche. Industry standards are the cornerstone of the technological compatibility that we enjoy as an advanced society. As we delve into the 21st century and beyond, the role of integrity in the standards setting process as a whole must be recognized by standards groups, end-users and importantly by the courts. This comment seeks to draw these entities into focusing on integrity and understand its importance in standards setting. Finally, this article strives to present a good starting point …

The Next Wave: Federal Regulatory, Intellectual Property, And Tort Liability Considerations For Medical Device Software, 2 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 259 (2003), Paul A. Mathew

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

Counsel for the medical software technologist faces an unusually complex, ongoing, high-stakes challenge. Counsel operates in a special field of commercial, legal and regulatory forces: (1) intellectual property laws which govern the expression and protection of commercial rights derived from advances in medical science and technology; (2) existing and proposed contracts/warranty laws that govern technological commercial relationships; (3) negligence, professional liability, and product liability laws that govern the marketing of medical technologies; and, (4) a new body of regulation derived from the power of the federal government to indirectly provide for the safety, effectiveness, privacy, and security of medical technologies …

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

As we enter further into the boom of the biotechnology era, the role that plants play in our everyday lives continues to grow increasingly more important. This article seeks to provide a general outline of the protections available on a national, as well as, international level for new plant varieties produced through both genetic engineering processes utilized by the biotechnology field, as well as, the "older" methods, such as cross germination, splicing, etc. that are still successfully being utilized by the general scientific community. In the broadest sense this article is designed to help those who are unfamiliar with the …

A Process For Achieving Comparable Data From Heterogeneous Databases, Rachel L. Richesson Jan 2003

A Process For Achieving Comparable Data From Heterogeneous Databases, Rachel L. Richesson

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The current state of health and biomedicine includes an enormity of heterogeneous data ‘silos’, collected for different purposes and represented differently, that are presently impossible to share or analyze in toto. The greatest challenge for large-scale and meaningful analyses of health-related data is to achieve a uniform data representation for data extracted from heterogeneous source representations. Based upon an analysis and categorization of heterogeneities, a process for achieving comparable data content by using a uniform terminological representation is developed. This process addresses the types of representational heterogeneities that commonly arise in healthcare data integration problems. Specifically, this process uses a …

Looking Backward: The Twentieth Century Revolutions In Psychiatry, Law And Public Mental Health, Sheldon Gelman

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Do histories of psychiatry make a difference--or have legal implications--in the present? Does our current situation help explain what historians say about psychiatry's past? Focusing on the past half century--the era of medications-- this paper explores the reciprocal relationship between the present and the past in psychiatry. Part II sketches the medical developments that constitute the subjects of any history of psychiatry. This Part also examines related developments in law. Part III introduces some problems of psychiatric historiography and examines some historians' attempts to deal with them. Part IV analyzes the account of psychiatry's past contained in Edward Shorter's well-regarded …

Some Realism About Indigenism, Michael Henry Davis Jan 2003

Some Realism About Indigenism, Michael Henry Davis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

The debate about creating so-called intellectual property (“IP”)--legal monopolies--over indigenous information (a product mostly of Third World countries) is habitually (almost stereotypically) characterized by qualifications that such monopolies really don't fit, and further qualifications that although they don't fit they are the best alternative. But underlying both sets of qualifications is often a confusion about what the real problem is. Because of a frequent failure to analyze closely the problem (and sometimes because of misinformation mixed with an unhealthy dose of romanticism), critics far too often jump to the legal monopoly solution to problems that ironically may be in large …

A Statistical Analysis To Improve Public Perception Of A State University's Police Department, Stephanie Davis, Terri French, Nancy Stuefen

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper addresses the question "How friendly is the University Police Department?" (UPD). This question was included in a survey given to 792 students at a Midwestern State university in October 2002 and was conducted by the university's Introduction to Criminal Justice class. Survey results indicated that 35% of the survey respondents said that UPD was "not very friendly" 27.9% indicated UPD was "somewhat friendly" 18.8% indicated UPD was "never friendly," and 3.7% indicated UPD was "very friendly." The rest of the respondents (14.7%) did not respond to the question. The proposed program recommendation outlined in this paper were developed …

A Comparison Of Methods For On-Farm Determination Of Failure Of Passive Transfer Of Immunoglobulin To Dairy Calves, Ann Harvey Jan 2003

A Comparison Of Methods For On-Farm Determination Of Failure Of Passive Transfer Of Immunoglobulin To Dairy Calves, Ann Harvey

The Journal of Undergraduate Research

Two commercially available, qualitative, on-farm test kits (Midland BioProducts Inc., Boone, lA), utilizing either serum or whole blood to evaluate failure of passive transfer (FPT) of immunoglobulins, were evaluated using 38 Holstein calves. Results from the kits were compared with refractometry determination of serum proteins and radial immunodiffusion determinations specific for IgG (RID; Triple J Farms, Bellingham,WA). Blood samples were collected immediately following birth before first colostrum feeding and at 48 h. At birth, serum protein concentrations averaged 4.52 g/dl and IgG averaged 8.6 mg/dl, respectively, for refractometer and RID. Forty eight hours after feeding colostrum, serum protein concentrations averaged …
