Implementing The Antiquities Act: A Survey Of Archeological Permits 1906-1935, Kathleen D. Browning Jan 2003

Implementing The Antiquities Act: A Survey Of Archeological Permits 1906-1935, Kathleen D. Browning

United States National Park Service: Publications

Public archeology in the United States received a long-sought and hard won legislative boost for antiquities protection in 1906. On June 8, 1906, a federal law, an Act for the Preservation of American Antiquities (16 U. S. C. 431-433) was signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt after several arduous decades of dedicated attention to the issue. Better known as the Antiquities Act, its enactment responded to a growing concern over the issues of looting and vandalism of American archeological resources. Proponents of the Act's passage intended to provide appropriate mechanisms to halt the plundering of antiquities and destruction of …

The Black Hills As A Sanctuary And Sacred Landscape Jan 2003

The Black Hills As A Sanctuary And Sacred Landscape

United States National Park Service: Publications

The Black Hills has long been written about as a place of great beauty and striking topo-graphy. Some of the earliest European Americans (Hughes, R. 1957:13; Dodge 1965:25, 49, 149-150; McLaird and Turchen 1974c:296-297; Knappen in Kraus and Olson 1974:23) who traveled the area and wrote about it were struck by the contrast the Hills environment made to the dryness and barrenness of the surrounding prairies and sagebrush steppes. The virtues of the Hills were even extolled in a spiritually inspiring language, with expressions like ―these sacred fastnesses," (Dodge 1965:150), "earthly paradise" (Curtis in Krause and Olson 1974:149), or an …

Weathering Of Sulfidic Shale And Copper Mine Waste: Secondary Minerals And Metal Cycling In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, And North Carolina, Usa, Jane M. Hammarstrom, Robert R. Seal Ii, Allen L. Meier, John C. Jackson Jan 2003

Weathering Of Sulfidic Shale And Copper Mine Waste: Secondary Minerals And Metal Cycling In Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, And North Carolina, Usa, Jane M. Hammarstrom, Robert R. Seal Ii, Allen L. Meier, John C. Jackson

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Metal cycling via physical and chemical weathering of discrete sources (copper mines) and regional (non-point) sources (sulfide-rich shale) is evaluated by examining the mineralogy and chemistry of weathering products in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, and North Carolina, USA. The elements in copper mine waste, secondary minerals, stream sediments, and waters that are most likely to have negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems are aluminum, copper, zinc, and arsenic because these elements locally exceed toxicity guidelines for surface waters or for stream sediments. Acid-mine drainage has not developed in streams draining inactive copper mines. Acid-rock drainage and chemical weathering processes …

Purpose: Since preclinical studies have shown more than additive cytotoxicity and DNA damage with the combination of gemcitabine and 5-fluoro-2′-deoxyuridine (FUDR), we studied this combination in a phase I trial. Methods: Gemcitabine alone was given in cycle 1 as a 24-h, 2-h or 1-h i.v. infusion weekly for 3 of 4 weeks; if tolerated, a 24-h i.v. infusion of FUDR was added with oral leucovorin. The cycle was aborted for grade 3 thrombocytopenia, grade 4 neutropenia, and grade 2 or worse nonhematologic toxicity. Results: During cycle 1, six of eight patients who received 150 or 100 mg/m2 over 24 h …

Homeland Security, Pesticide Regulation And Common Household Chemicals: Are We Adequately Protecting All Our Sources, Leticia M. Diaz

Faculty Scholarship

In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, legislators, business owners, consumers and everyday citizens, all with a view of how to protect our interests, voiced their opinions on how to improve national security with patriotic zest. FIFRA's main purpose is to ensure federal regulation of pesticide distribution and use. This power is of particular importance given the terroristic threat of possible chemical warfare. Chemical professionals were cognizant of the importance of site security even prior to the September 11th terrorist attacks. With respect to the risk of terrorist attacks using pesticides or other chemical agents, EPA …

Tum The Wheel: Integral School Counseling For Male Adolescents, David Forbes Jan 2003

Tum The Wheel: Integral School Counseling For Male Adolescents, David Forbes

Publications and Research

In the wake of violent episodes committed by male youths in schools, many male adolescents grapple with the traditional norm of masculinity and the role it might play in contributing to such violence. School counselors need to address the developmental needs of all male youth, because schools play a significant role in the construction of male identities. This article formulates an overarching, inclusive model of integral counseling that enables school counselors to help male adolescents challenge the norm of conventional masculinity. The model draws from 3 areas: transpersonal counseling, holistic education, and mindful social action. The aim is to move …

Expressivism, Empathy And Equality, Rachel D. Godsil Jan 2003

Expressivism, Empathy And Equality, Rachel D. Godsil

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In this article, Professor Godsil argues that the Supreme Court should not limit its application of heightened scrutiny to facially neutral government actions motivated by discriminatory intent, but rather, that the Court should apply such scrutiny when the challenged government action expresses contempt or hostility toward racial, ethnic, and gender groups or constitutes them as social inferiors or stigmatized classes. This article builds upon recent scholarship seeking to transplant this form of expressivism from the Establishment Clause to the Equal Protection context. However, this article contends that this scholarship has misconceived the test to be applied. For any expressive theory, …

Recent Observations Of The Distribution And Status Of Freckled Madtom And First Record Of Spotted Gar In Iowa, Melvin C. Bowler Jan 2003

Recent Observations Of The Distribution And Status Of Freckled Madtom And First Record Of Spotted Gar In Iowa, Melvin C. Bowler

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The distribution and status of Iowa's fishes were last extensively described in Iowa Fish and Fishing (Harlan et al. 1987). Since then, numerous fish collections have been made in Iowa's interior and bordering rivers and streams. In this paper, I describe recent collections of freckled mad tom (Noturus nocturnus) and spotted gar (Lepisosteus oculatus) from the Upper Mississippi. River (UMR). Six specimens of N. nocturnus were collected from Pool 13 of the UMR in 2001. Although the first documented specimens of N. nocturnus in Iowa were collected in the English River in 1984, few collections have been made throughout the …
