Marie Bankhead Owen And The Alabama Department Of Archives And History, 1920-1955, Robert J. Jakeman Jan 2003

Marie Bankhead Owen And The Alabama Department Of Archives And History, 1920-1955, Robert J. Jakeman

Provenance, Journal of the Society of Georgia Archivists

March 1920 was a traumatic month for Marie Bankhead Owen. It began with the death of her influential father, Senator John Hollis Bankhead, and it ended with the sudden death of her fifty-three-year-old husband, Thomas McAdory Owen, founding director of the Alabama Department of Archives and History (ADAH). Then on April 1 she accepted an appointment as the second director of ADAH, a position she held for over three decades. Thus, in the space of one month, Marie Bankhead Owen lost her father and her husband and began a thirty-five year career as director of the Alabama archives.

Using Grunig's Situational Theory Of Publics To Investigate How Convention & Visitors Bureaus Across The Nation Are Employing Communication Tactics In The Wake Of September 11th, Lisa T. Fall Jan 2003

Using Grunig's Situational Theory Of Publics To Investigate How Convention & Visitors Bureaus Across The Nation Are Employing Communication Tactics In The Wake Of September 11th, Lisa T. Fall

Iowa Journal of Communication

This study identifies communication techniques (channels) being employed more now, compared to before the September 11 attacks, among convention and visitors bureau (CVB) managers. Two frameworks were used as the basis for the study: the situational theory, developed by Grunig (1978, 1979a); and the theoretical underpinnings of McLuhan's (1964, 1967) critical-cultural perspective "the medium is the message," positing that the channel itself makes its own contribution to the communication process. Results (n = 184) indicate that since the attacks, CVB managers are using the Internet and PR/media relations tactics more frequently and advertising tactics less frequently.

The Takings Clause And The Separation Of Powers: An Essay, John A. Humbach Jan 2003

The Takings Clause And The Separation Of Powers: An Essay, John A. Humbach

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

The most fundamental environmental problem is this: across our nation there are literally hundreds of millions of acres of important natural resource lands-- farms, forests, wetlands, reservoir watersheds, shore lands, endangered species habitat--lands that have relatively little commercial value in their present natural condition, but which would have much greater commercial value if their natural values were degraded or destroyed. Stated differently, private property often will yield a much greater profit to its owner if it is used in ways that will harm or obliterate important environmental assets and values. For this reason, private owners are understandably tempted to supplant …

Water Dispute Resolution In The West: Process Elements For The Modern Era In Basin-Wide Problem Solving, Barbara Cosens Jan 2003

Water Dispute Resolution In The West: Process Elements For The Modern Era In Basin-Wide Problem Solving, Barbara Cosens

Articles

Growing urban water demand, recent recognition of tribal water rights, and needs for critical aquatic habitat in the face of the archaic law governing water allocation are driving people in the western United States to seek alternative methods to resolve water allocation disputes. The current ad hoc and locally driven approach to negotiation of basin-wide water issues runs the risk of overlooking broader interests. Whereas water use is local and rives local economies, the continued viability of our water resources and the legacy we leave to future generations in water infrastructure, social stability, an environmental amenities is national in scope. …

Competition. Corporate Responsibility. And The China Question, Joseph Vining

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

Corporate responsibility is a debatable question worth having a discussion about - exemption and difference from the norm. There is necessarily the implication of the alternative, corporate non-responsibility, or some would like to say, irresponsibility.

Markets As Social Actors, Peter J. Hammer Jan 2003

Markets As Social Actors, Peter J. Hammer

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

In healthcare, the role and scope of markets as a means of resource allocation is contestable. The role of markets as opposed to current backlash against managed care illustrates the continued contestability of markets in healthcare.

How Well Does The Wto Settle Disputes?, Susan Esserman, Robert L. Howse

Law Quadrangle (formerly Law Quad Notes)

Last fall, a judicial panel of the WorldTrade Organization (WTO) issued a controversial ruling in a high-stakes corporate tax dispute between the United States and the European Union. Paying scant attention to the complexities of the case, the panel authorized Brussels to implement retaliatory sanction of $4 billion - an unprecedented sum - against Washington. Notably, around the same time the United States and its European allies were also making headlines with another fierce legal battle: over the authority of the International Criminal Court to prosecute American soldiers for alleged misdeeds committed abroad.

Intersystem Collaboration: A Statewide Initiative To Support Families, Elizabeth M. Tracy, David E. Beigel, Ann C. Rebeck, Jeffrey A. Johnsen

Journal of Family Strengths

The study described in this paper utilized a qualitative case study method to assess the processes involved in inter-system collaboration in the context of one state's system change initiative. The collaborative experience is described from the perspective of participating service system professionals and family members. The major themes of collaboration that emerged from the study included changes in communication across systems, changes in inter-system relationships, changes in attitudes, changes in interactions with families, and changes in the ways services are delivered. Lessons learned and practice implications of each theme are discussed.

Family Planning And Pmtct Services: Examining Interrelationships, Strengthening Linkages, Naomi Rutenberg, Carolyn Baek, Chipepo Kankasa, Ruth Nduati, Dorothy Mbori-Ngacha, Margaret Siwale, Scott Geibel, Louis Apicella

HIV and AIDS

Preventing unintended pregnancy among HIV-positive women through family planning (FP) services is one of the four cornerstones of a comprehensive program for prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT). Reducing unintended pregnancies among HIV-positive women would yield a reduction in infections among infants and a reduction in the number of children potentially orphaned when parents die of AIDS-related illnesses. It also reduces HIV-positive women's vulnerability to morbidity and mortality related to pregnancy and lactation. In addition, family planning for both HIV-positive and -negative women safeguards their health by enabling them to space births. This brief focuses on findings from Horizons studies …

Supporting And Being Supported: Receiving And Providing Social Support In Mothers Of Young Children, Jennifer S. Feenstra Jan 2003

Supporting And Being Supported: Receiving And Providing Social Support In Mothers Of Young Children, Jennifer S. Feenstra

Doctoral Dissertations

Social support research has long focused on one aspect of support, receiving support. The present study expands social support to include both receiving and providing support, applies the ideas of social exchange theory to this expanded concept, and test hypotheses pertaining to this broader definition of social support. The emotional, tangible, and information/advice support received from and provided to sixty-five mothers of young children in their relationships with their spouse, parents, and others was assessed on a weekly basis for four weeks. Greater perceived support from friends and family and greater support received and provided in the relationship with spouse …

Evaluation Of Bacteriophage And Viral Persistence During Alkaline Stabilization In Sludge And Biosolids Intended For Land Application, Jacqueline Joy Brabants Jan 2003

Evaluation Of Bacteriophage And Viral Persistence During Alkaline Stabilization In Sludge And Biosolids Intended For Land Application, Jacqueline Joy Brabants

Doctoral Dissertations

The use of lime to reduce or eliminate pathogen content is a cost-effective treatment method currently being employed in many Class B biosolids production plants in the United States. A bench scale model of lime stabilization was designed to evaluate pathogen persistence. The survivability of poliovirus type 1, fecal coliforms, Salmonella, adenovirus type 5, rotavirus Wa, and the male-specific bacteriophage MS-2 was evaluated under lime stabilization conditions in various matrices. Salmonella and fecal coliforms were evaluated at 28°C and poliovirus and MS-2 were evaluated at both 28°C and 4°C for survivability under lime stabilization conditions in a sludge matrix. All …

Spatial Modeling And Visualization Of Habitat Response To Hydrologic Restoration In New England Salt Marshes, Raymond Anthony Konisky Jan 2003

Spatial Modeling And Visualization Of Habitat Response To Hydrologic Restoration In New England Salt Marshes, Raymond Anthony Konisky

Doctoral Dissertations

Anthropogenic alterations that restrict tidal flows negatively impact 20% of New England salt marshes, but management attempts to restore tides to these sites can be met with unexpected or less than optimal results. Restoration planners may be hindered by a lack of synthesized information regarding important biotic and abiotic factors that determine the distribution of dominant salt marsh plants and invasive species. An ecosystem model was developed to better predict salt marsh habitat response to hydrologic modification as a synthesis of existing models for biomass production, marsh elevation, tidal hydrology, and plant succession. A field experiment was conducted to provide …

Investigations Into The Digestive System Proteases Of Argiope Aurantia (Araneae: Araneidae), Hemolytic Agents Of Spider Venoms, And The Role Of Both In Necrotic Arachnidism, Matthew Joseph Foradori Jan 2003

Investigations Into The Digestive System Proteases Of Argiope Aurantia (Araneae: Araneidae), Hemolytic Agents Of Spider Venoms, And The Role Of Both In Necrotic Arachnidism, Matthew Joseph Foradori

Doctoral Dissertations

Necrotic arachnidism, or tissue necrosis following spider bites is a widespread problem. Knowledge of the exact mechanism that produces such lesions is still incomplete. Here I have examined spider digestive fluid proteases and spider venom enzymes (e.g., sphingomyelinase D and phospholipase A2) for their potential to cause necrotic lesions, as both are thought to be primary agents.

The digestive fluid of Argiope aurantia was examined for its ability to cleave a variety of extra-cellular matrix proteins, including collagen, elastin, and fibronectin. Having confirmed that the fluid has collagenases, the digestive fluid was injected into the skin of rabbits to observe …

Spatial Properties Of Photophobia, James Michael Stringham Jan 2003

Spatial Properties Of Photophobia, James Michael Stringham

Doctoral Dissertations

The squint response corresponding to photophobia (light-induced discomfort) was assessed via electromyography as a function of stimulus size, retinal locus (superior, inferior, temporal, nasal), and retinal eccentricity in three subjects. These results were compared to the same subjects' psychophysically-determined spatial distributions of macular pigment, to examine in detail the attenuation of photophobia by macular pigment. Results indicate that the photophobia response is preferentially biased to prevent the fovea from exposure to potentially damaging short-wavelength light. In this regard, macular pigment appears to act as a spatially-integrated filter, serving to attenuate photophobia to a great extent. Photophobia and macular pigment therefore …

Conceptualizing And Measuring The Life Space And Its Relation To Openness To Experience, Marc A. Brackett Jan 2003

Conceptualizing And Measuring The Life Space And Its Relation To Openness To Experience, Marc A. Brackett

Doctoral Dissertations

The Life Space is divided into four domains that surround personality, which broadly encompass a person's biological foundations, owned possessions, interactions and daily activities, and group memberships. In Study 1, a revised measure of the Life Space (the College Student Life Space Scale) was developed. Factor analysis of the items within each domain resulted in 96 meaningful and reliable factor-based scales that provided a rich description of college students' personal surroundings and everyday behavior. A second-order (hierarchical) factor analysis of the first-order scales resulted in seven global Life Space dimensions. In Study 2, the first- and second-order Life Space scales …
