Ghana And Guatemala: Clients And Providers Need Better Support And Guidance On Iuds, Frontiers In Reproductive Health

Reproductive Health

The intrauterine device (IUD) is a safe, effective, and reversible contraceptive method, however in many countries use of the IUD is stagnant or declining in relation to other contraceptive methods. In 2002, the Population Council investigated the reasons for low utilization of IUDs among women in Ghana and Guatemala. The studies examined clients’ and providers’ knowledge and attitudes about IUDs as well as factors within the health system that affect their use and availability. The studies took place at public, private, and nongovernmental health centers and clinics in both rural and urban settings. Researchers collected qualitative data using a combination …

Growth And Survivorship Of Meandrina Meandrites And Montastrea Cavernosa Transplants To An Artificial Reef Environment, And The Effectiveness Of Plugging Core Holes In Transplant Donor Colonies, Elizabeth Glynn Fahy

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The growth and survivorship of two species of scleractinian coral transplants, Meandrina meandrites and Montastrea cavernosa, were investigated. Identically sized replicate transplants were obtained from the second reef, off Dania Beach, using a hydraulic drill fitted with a 4” core barrel. The transplants were fixed to Reef Ball™ substrates using an adhesive marine epoxy. Drill holes in the donor corals (core holes) were filled with concrete plugs to prevent the detrimental effects of bioeroders. Control corals, of comparable size to both the donor colonies and the transplant corals, were selected for comparison. The transplant corals, donor corals, and controls …

Hostile Environment Actions, Title Vii, And The Ada: The Limits Of The Copy-And-Paste Function, Lisa A. Eichhorn Jan 2003

Hostile Environment Actions, Title Vii, And The Ada: The Limits Of The Copy-And-Paste Function, Lisa A. Eichhorn

Faculty Publications

Two federal circuits, borrowing from Title VII jurisprudence, recently recognized a cause of action for a disability-based hostile environment under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Neither opinion, however, considered how the analysis of a disability-based hostile environment claim under the ADA might differ from that of a race- or sex-based hostile environment claim under Title VII. This Article examines the differing theories of equality underlying the two statutes and argues that, because the statutes prohibit discrimination in fundamentally different ways, courts must resist the temptation to copy and paste Title VII doctrine into ADA hostile environment opinions. This Article …

Bcl-2 Down Regulating Ceramide De Novo Pathway, Ibrahim Abdelrahman Jan 2003

Bcl-2 Down Regulating Ceramide De Novo Pathway, Ibrahim Abdelrahman

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Ceramide is a sphingolipid second messenger that is involved in apoptosis and other cellular responses to stress. Ceramide generation occurs primarily by two methods: hydrolysis of sphingomyelin by sphingomyelinases or by de novo synthesis, which is initiated on the surface of the endoplasmic reticulum by serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT). The de novo synthesis of ceramide is activated in response to' retinoic acid, chemotherapeutic agents like etoposide or daunorubicin, and TNF-_ . We have shown previously that SPT is activated in response to chemotherapy and governs de novo ceramide production. To determine factors that regulate SPT and the de novo pathway we …

Rethinking Pegram : Why Erisa Health Benefits Administrators Should Have A Comprehensive Legal Requirement Of Fiduciary Duty, Bradley Ray Helfand Jan 2003

Rethinking Pegram : Why Erisa Health Benefits Administrators Should Have A Comprehensive Legal Requirement Of Fiduciary Duty, Bradley Ray Helfand

Public Health Theses

In the 2000 case Pegram v. Herdrich, the U.S. Supreme Court decided that administrators of health benefits plans covered by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974 do not have a fiduciary duty towards beneficiaries when making "mixed decisions" involving treatment and eligibility components. This thesis, Rethinking Pegram: Why ERISA Health Benefits Administrators Should Have a Comprehensive Legal Requirement of Fiduciary Duty, challenges the Court's opinion on grounds of legal precedent and public health ethics. While the legal critique of Pegram is an elaboration of earlier scholarship, the public health ethics critique represents a unique contribution …

Summer Vs. Winter Growth Promotant Strategies For Intact Yearling Heifers, Wanda Kreikemeier, Terry L. Mader Jan 2003

Summer Vs. Winter Growth Promotant Strategies For Intact Yearling Heifers, Wanda Kreikemeier, Terry L. Mader

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

A winter and a summer trial were conducted to evaluate growth promoting strategies among season for yearling heifers fed feedlot finishing diets. Two hundred seventy Angus crossbred intact yearling heifers were used for each trial. Daily dry matter intake and daily water intake were recorded and average daily gain and feed efficiency were calculated. A growth promotant by season interaction was found for dry matter intake only. Performance was improved in both summer and winter when a growth promoting system was used. In the summer, adding melengestrol acetate to estrogenic and androgenic implants strategies tended to stimulate DMI, while in …

Body Temperature Changes Associated With Moving Feedlot Cattle, Terry L. Mader Jan 2003

Body Temperature Changes Associated With Moving Feedlot Cattle, Terry L. Mader

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

In two winter and two summer studies, tympanic temperatures (TT), an indicator of body temperature, were obtained in unrestrained feedlot cattle moved through working facilities. Moving yearling cattle elevated TT between 0.5 and 1.4°F. Effects of cattle movement and handling on body temperature needs to be taken into account when evaluating animal health studies. Furthermore, minimal handling of cattle during hot days is recommended for promoting animal well-being and comfort.
