Envisioning A Global Legal Culture, Charles H. Koch Jr. Jan 2003

Envisioning A Global Legal Culture, Charles H. Koch Jr.

Michigan Journal of International Law

To encourage all, but particularly U.S., lawyers to think about transformation of the law, this Article will envision a global legal regime. The purpose is more reflective than predictive. Nominally, the Article has three parts. The first Part offers an overview description of the emerging supranational legal institutions and the major forces moving them. The next Part will outline civil law legal concepts and provide background for common law readers. To further the goal of this Article, it will do so as it suggests some issues that will arise as the civil law system is incorporated into the global legal …

Multiple Damage Detection In Structures Using A Coupled Modal Analysis And Wavelet Transform Technique, Nasser S. Bajabaa Jan 2003

Multiple Damage Detection In Structures Using A Coupled Modal Analysis And Wavelet Transform Technique, Nasser S. Bajabaa

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A new technique that couples modal analysis and wavelet transforms for detection of multiple damage in structures is introduced. Structural damage may cause local changes in one or more of the following parameters; stiffness, mass and damping that affect the dynamic behavior of the structure. For example, a crack reduces the stiffness of the structure in a localized sense, and thus reducing its natural frequency, and causes changes in both modal damping and mode shapes. In this research, two different structures have been analyzed: beams and plates. First, uniform beams with a single damage (notch) of different sizes at different …

Explaining, Assessing, And Changing High Consumption, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

These writings reflect the renewed interest in the 1990s of scholars and the public in questioning the consumer society, an interest that the political crises engendered by 9/11 have overshadowed but not eliminated. In The Overspent American, Schor explains the emergence of strong doubts about high consumption by arguing that a “new consumerism” of escalating desires has evolved that is increasingly costly to the American high consumers themselves.

Sexism Is A "Family Value", Kimberly Charles Jan 2003

Sexism Is A "Family Value", Kimberly Charles

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that sexism is an inherent and underlying value in the discourse of the Christian Coalition of America, a prominent Right-Wing group. Rooted in Fundamentalist Christianity, the Coalition's "family values" agenda perpetuates a society of domination, where male authority and control over women are justified as natural and ordained by God. This ideology is evident in their political activism, legal advocacy, and social policies, which systematically undermine women's rights and reinforce gender inequality.

Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 2001 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Adam Becker, Sara Becker Jan 2003

Supreme Court Voting Behavior: 2001 Term, Richard G. Wilkins, Scott Worthington, Adam Becker, Sara Becker

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

This Study, the sixteenth in a series, tabulates and analyzes the voting behavior of the United States Supreme Court during the 2001 Term. The analysis is designed to determine whether individual Justices and the Court as a whole are voting more "conservatively," more "liberally," or about the same when compared with past Terms. This Study attempts to remove subjectivity by applying a consistent classification scheme to ten categories of cases over time. This Term's data strongly suggests that the present Court stands in an uneasy ideological balance. The Court's voting behavior during the 2001 Term reverses the modest liberal trend …

Each February, competitors convene in Big Lake, Alaska, to participate in the “Iditasport Human Powered Ultra-Marathon”. Who would attempt this challenging race? Personality might be one factor predicting participation. Iditasport represents a unique athletic event with a distinctive social and psychological climate that might be reflected in the personalities of the participants in many ways. This study was designed to identify the personality profile of Iditasport athletes when compared to normative populations and to explore differences between athletes competing in different race divisions.

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

We assessed body composition (height, body mass, body mass index, body fat by densitometry, fat mass, fat-free mass, and lean/fat ratio) and performance (10- and 40-yd sprints, pro shuttle run, vertical jump, sit and reach, and bench press) in 77 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III football players. Data were analyzed by position and playing status. Significant differences (p less than or equal to 0.05) were found between positions for all body composition measurements and all performance tests except the sit and reach. Starters outperformed nonstarters in all performance tests except the 10-yd sprint and sit and reach ( …

Avoiding The “Fat” Of The Land: Case Studies Of Agricultural Nutrient Balance, David Weaver, Simon Neville

Journal articles

Let’s start with a simple analogy: if a person eats more than they need, they gain weight. That is: if our feed inputs (kilojoules in) are greater than our outputs (exercise — kilojoules out) then we will gain weight (kilojoules in storage). That’s our fat. If, on the other hand, our feed inputs are less than our outputs, then we will lose weight. And if our inputs are the same as our outputs, our weight will remain constant. In general, the further away you are from an ‘ideal’weight, the greater the health risks. And yes, other aspects of your body management — …

Oxygen Saturation Among Newborn Infants And The Decrease Occurring During Feeding In Various Populations, Jennifer Lynn Allison Jan 2003

Oxygen Saturation Among Newborn Infants And The Decrease Occurring During Feeding In Various Populations, Jennifer Lynn Allison

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Pharyngeal and laryngeal structural movements coordinate respiration and swallowing functions, hence eliminating simultaneous execution. This research aims to document levels of oxygen saturation during rest and feeding among various newborn populations. Hypothesized is that an increase in oxygen alterations during feeding will be exhibited by infants of younger gestational age and, further, by those with the presence of respiratory anomalies. Thirty newborns in the nurseries at Medical University of South Carolina, free of cardiac and genetic maladies, were divided into three groups. Subjects of group 1 are healthy, full-term newborns; within groups 2 and 3, preterm infants (gestation). Subjects of …
