The Abcs And Beyond: Developing An Operations Research Agenda On Comprehensive Behavior Change Approaches For Hiv Prevention: Report From A Technical Meeting, Julie Pulerwitz, Johannes Van Dam, Natalie Phillips-Hamblett Jan 2003

The Abcs And Beyond: Developing An Operations Research Agenda On Comprehensive Behavior Change Approaches For Hiv Prevention: Report From A Technical Meeting, Julie Pulerwitz, Johannes Van Dam, Natalie Phillips-Hamblett

HIV and AIDS

In April 2003, the Horizons Program sponsored a one-day technical meeting to develop and set priorities for an operations research agenda to study effective behavior change strategies for HIV risk reduction, particularly those that focus on the “ABC” behaviors: abstinence or delaying sex, being faithful or partner reduction, and condom use. Representatives from more than 20 organizations and programs involved in prevention research and programming discussed epidemiological, behavioral, psychosocial, and structural factors that may help determine the effectiveness of promoting the ABCs and other prevention programs. During the meeting, specific opportunities for collaborations and areas of particular interest for each …

The Impact Of Life Skills Education On Adolescent Sexual Risk Behaviors [Arabic], Robert Magnani, Kate Macintyre, Ali Mehyrar Karim, Lisanne Brown, Paul Hutchinson Jan 2003

The Impact Of Life Skills Education On Adolescent Sexual Risk Behaviors [Arabic], Robert Magnani, Kate Macintyre, Ali Mehyrar Karim, Lisanne Brown, Paul Hutchinson

HIV and AIDS

In response to the escalating HIV/AIDS epidemic, in 1998 the South African Ministry of Education mandated implementation of a comprehensive life skills education program in all secondary schools by 2005. The Life Skills Program aims to increase knowledge and develop skills to help youth protect themselves from HIV infection and to safeguard their reproductive health. Although it is too early to assess the long-term impact of this initiative, the phased implementation of life skills education provides an opportunity to assess short-term impact. To measure the effects of exposure to topics within the life skills curriculum on sexual and reproductive health …

Programming For Hiv Prevention In Mexican Schools, Ann P. Mccauley, Martha Givaudan, Susan Pick, Jessica Greene Jan 2003

Programming For Hiv Prevention In Mexican Schools, Ann P. Mccauley, Martha Givaudan, Susan Pick, Jessica Greene

HIV and AIDS

As national education programs incorporate HIV prevention into school curriculums, policymakers and educators need to know what they can expect from these initiatives. Can such courses influence the behavior of students and improve their knowledge and attitudes? If not, what can these courses reasonably be expected to accomplish, and what part can they play in overall HIV programming for youth? To help answer these questions, the Mexican Institute of Family and Population Research (IMIFAP), the Mexican Ministry of Public Education (SEP), and the Horizons Program examined the effects of a school-based HIV-prevention program on Mexican secondary-school students. All public schools …

Succession Planning In Uganda: Early Outreach For Aids-Affected Children And Their Families, Population Council Jan 2003

Succession Planning In Uganda: Early Outreach For Aids-Affected Children And Their Families, Population Council

HIV and AIDS

Although Uganda has been widely recognized for lowering HIV incidence, the number of orphaned children is still rising. By the end of 2001, there were 880,000 children under age 15 living in Uganda who had lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS and many more vulnerable children whose parents are alive but living with HIV infection. Few programs exist to help families before a parent’s death, and there is little research on the effectiveness of existing programs for AIDS-affected children. In 1999, Makerere University and Horizons initiated a study in two largely rural districts of Uganda with small urban and …

The Plha-Friendly Achievement Checklist: A Self-Assessment Tool For Hospitals And Other Medical Institutions Caring For People Living With Hiv/Aids (Plha), Horizons Program, Sharan

HIV and AIDS

The Population Council/Horizons (New Delhi and Washington, DC) and the Society for Service to Urban Poverty (New Delhi) are conducting an operations research study in three New Delhi hospitals. The study, entitled “Improving the hospital environment for HIV-positive clients in India,” is endorsed by the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) of India. The main objective is to assess factors that affect the quality and type of care received by the general patient population, with special emphasis on patients with HIV. Another objective is to assess and address factors that affect staff safety with respect to infectious diseases. As part of …

Evaluation Of United Nations-Supported Pilot Projects For The Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv: Overview Of Findings, Naomi Rutenberg, Carolyn Baek, Sam Kalibala, James Rosen Jan 2003

Evaluation Of United Nations-Supported Pilot Projects For The Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv: Overview Of Findings, Naomi Rutenberg, Carolyn Baek, Sam Kalibala, James Rosen

HIV and AIDS

Worldwide about 800,000 children a year get HIV infections from their mothers—either during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Countries have the potential to prevent a large share of these infections through low-cost, effective interventions. UN agencies have taken the lead in helping developing countries mount programs for prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT). This working paper presents key findings from an evaluation of UN-supported pilot PMTCT projects in 11 countries: Botswana, Burundi, Cote d’Ivoire, Honduras, India, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Key findings include feasibility and coverage, factors contributing to program coverage, program challenges, scaling up, the special case of …

Hiv Voluntary Counseling And Testing: An Essential Component In Preventing Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv, Naomi Rutenberg, Chipepo Kankasa, Ruth Nduati, Dorothy Mbori-Ngacha, Margaret Siwale, Scott Geibel, Louis Apicella

HIV and AIDS

Positive results from clinical trials of the anti-retroviral medications zidovudine and nevirapine created the possibility of offering an affordable and feasible intervention worldwide to reduce HIV transmission from an infected pregnant woman to her infant. Governmental and nongovernmental health services in many highly affected areas of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe have responded by piloting and rapidly expanding programs for the prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT). Since their inception in 1999, programs have offered voluntary HIV counseling and testing (VCT) to more than 800,000 pregnant women around the world. An important objective of VCT is to identify …

Programme Recommendations For The Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv: A Practical Guide For Managers, Naomi Rutenberg, Sam Kalibala, Carolyn Baek, James Rosen Jan 2003

Programme Recommendations For The Prevention Of Mother-To-Child Transmission Of Hiv: A Practical Guide For Managers, Naomi Rutenberg, Sam Kalibala, Carolyn Baek, James Rosen

HIV and AIDS

UNAIDS estimates that 800,000 children were infected with HIV in 2001, almost all through transmission of the virus from their mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Of these, seven of each eight live in sub-Saharan Africa and most of the rest live in South and Southeast Asia. To combat mother-to-child transmission of HIV (MTCT), in 1999 the UNAIDS Secretariat, UNFPA, UNICEF, and WHO launched the Inter Agency Task Team on Prevention of HIV Transmission in Pregnant Women, Mothers, and Their Children (IATT), which provides guidance for prevention of MTCT (PMTCT). In the view of the IATT, PMTCT is part of …

Expanding Workplace Hiv/Aids Prevention Activities For A Highly Mobile Population: Construction Workers In Ho Chi Minh City, Vu Ngoc Bao, Philip Guest, Julie Pulerwitz, Le Thuy Lan Thao, Duong Xuan Dinh, Tran Thi Kim Xuyen, Ann Levin Jan 2003

Expanding Workplace Hiv/Aids Prevention Activities For A Highly Mobile Population: Construction Workers In Ho Chi Minh City, Vu Ngoc Bao, Philip Guest, Julie Pulerwitz, Le Thuy Lan Thao, Duong Xuan Dinh, Tran Thi Kim Xuyen, Ann Levin

HIV and AIDS

In Ho Chi Minh City, the locus of the HIV epidemic in Vietnam, efforts have been under way for several years to implement prevention efforts for migrant worker populations. The main activity has been volunteer health communicators (HCs) visiting workplaces and conducting HIV education activities. These efforts have reached only a small number of the intended audience, and the impact is unclear. Local authorities want to scale up their efforts but need information on the most effective and least costly activities, and their potential for scale up. The Horizons Program, the Population Council/Vietnam, and partners compared two programs for highly …

Expanding Workplace Hiv Prevention Programs For A Highly Mobile Population In Ho Chi Minh City, Vu Ngoc Bao, Philip Guest, Julie Pulerwitz, Le Thuy Lan Thao, Duong Xuan Dinh, Tran Thi Kim Xuyen, Ann Levin

HIV and AIDS

As HIV prevalence in Vietnam increases, promoting prevention behavior among vulnerable populations, such as migrant workers, becomes more critical. In Ho Chi Minh City, efforts by the local government have been in place for several years to focus prevention activities on migrant workers. The principal activity uses volunteer health communicators to conduct HIV education activities at workplaces. Yet these prevention efforts have reached only a minority of migrant workers, and the effectiveness of the approach remains unclear. Local authorities want to expand their efforts but need more information about which activities are the most effective and least costly, as well …

Involving Youth In The Care And Support Of People Affected By Hiv And Aids, Eka Esu-Williams, Scott Geibel, Joseph Motsepe, Katie D. Schenk, Moses Zulu, Petronella Bweupe

HIV and AIDS

Young people in Zambia who were trained to provide care and support to individuals and families affected by AIDS have proven to be a vital resource to their communities. In a country where adult HIV prevalence is 13 percent among males and 18 percent among females, communities are seeking new ways of helping those infected and affected by the disease. As the needs of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLHA) and orphans and vulnerable children continue to escalate, results from an intervention study by the Horizons Program, in partnership with Care International and Family Health Trust, provide a promising …

Participation Accrue Des Personnes Vivant Avec Le Vih/Sida Aux Activités Des Ong De Lutte Contre Le Sida, Population Council

HIV and AIDS

The Role Of Ap-1 Transcription Complex In Retinoic Acid-Dependent B16 Melanoma Cell Growth Arrest And Differentiation, Ying Huang Jan 2003

The Role Of Ap-1 Transcription Complex In Retinoic Acid-Dependent B16 Melanoma Cell Growth Arrest And Differentiation, Ying Huang

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Our laboratory has been studying the effects of all-trans retinoic acid (atRA) on the growth and differentiation of the B16 mouse melanoma cells. RA inhibits both anchorage-dependent and –independent growth and stimulates melanin production in B16 cells, which are accompanied by an increase in AP-1 activity. To further investigate the RA-induced AP-1 activity, I established clones of B16 stably expressing an AP-1-luciferase reporter gene. Treatment of these clones with phorbol dibutyrate (PDB), a known activator of AP-1, rapidly increased AP-1 activity which reached its maximum level at 2-4 h and returned to baseline level by 24 h. In contrast, RA …
