Women, Health, And Aging In Yup'ik/Cup'ik Culture, Scarlett Hopkins Hutchison
Women, Health, And Aging In Yup'ik/Cup'ik Culture, Scarlett Hopkins Hutchison
Anthropology
Knowledge of cultural beliefs about health and how they influence life choices and intervention is essential in forming health policy and health promotion programs to meet the growing needs of aging minority populations. This thesis explores cultural beliefs, experiences, and expectations of health and well-being of Yup'ik/Cup'ik women in two rural communities in southwestern Alaska. Interviews were conducted with fifteen women to address two key research questions: (1) how Yup'ik/Cup'ik women define health and well-being; and (2) what environmental, social, and cultural factors contribute to healthy Yup'ik/Cup'ik aging. While many health beliefs and practices appear very different from those current …

Strategy Uses And Study Time: Relationship With Memory Performance In Older Adults, Karen A. S. Doolittle
Strategy Uses And Study Time: Relationship With Memory Performance In Older Adults, Karen A. S. Doolittle
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
The overall purpose of this study was to foster a greater understanding of age-related memory loss as it pertains to the aging workforce's ability to remain productive and effective in a time of complex change, and to recommend some adjustments that can be made to compensate for these memory declines. The specific intent of this current project was to test one premise of Ericsson and Chase's Skilled Memory Theory, namely that memory skill is a skill that can be developed through enhanced encoding and through practice. By introducing participants to the simple mnemonic strategy of chunking and by allowing two …

Future Housing In The United States: Senior’S Housing Demand, Sandeep Singh
Future Housing In The United States: Senior’S Housing Demand, Sandeep Singh
Masters Theses
In the United States, persons born between 1942 and 1964 are within 10 to 15 years of traditional retirement age and are identified as baby boomers. The data shows that the number of persons aged 65 years and older have grown from 10 percent of the population in 1970 to nearly 13 percent in 1996. Furthermore, the population that is 65 years old or older is projected to be 20 percent of the population in 2030. As a result, the demographic change nurtures a demand for senior’s housing.
On the other hand, the concern is for the elderly living in …
Coping With Stressors Of Caregiving, Debra E. Allwardt
Coping With Stressors Of Caregiving, Debra E. Allwardt
Student Work
Individuals who take on the role of caregiving for a family member with Alzheimer’s disease face many simultaneous stressors. Effective coping with such stressors has profound implications for caregiver well-being and the ability to provide effective care. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of various coping strategies on caregiver depression, controlling for the effects other factors previously shown to be related to depression. Using data from interviews with 427 caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients, items derived from Endler and Parker’s Multidimensional Coping Inventory were factor analyzed to confirm the underlying structure. A five-factor structure was found to …
