The Tourist Experience In Boston, 1848-1910: American History, Middle-Class Leisure And The Development Of Urban Tourism, Hillary Corbett May 2003

The Tourist Experience In Boston, 1848-1910: American History, Middle-Class Leisure And The Development Of Urban Tourism, Hillary Corbett

American Studies Graduate Final Projects

This project analyzes a selection of representative guidebooks produced between 1848 and 1910, to illustrate the development of a tourist industry in Boston and to indicate how the changing nature of the city influenced a similar change in the tourist experience. It also provides the necessary context in which to place this narrative. Part I introduces two key elements essential to understanding the relevance of urban tourism in Boston: the city’s experiences with the national phenomena of electrification and urban planning in the mid- to late-nineteenth century, and Boston’s distinctive role in nineteenth-century America’s developing national identity and history. Food, Sex, Death, And Quest: The Literary Legacy Of Sir John Franklin, Maureen Eleanor Long May 2003

Food, Sex, Death, And Quest: The Literary Legacy Of Sir John Franklin, Maureen Eleanor Long

Arctic and Northern Studies

The story of Sir John Franklin, nineteenth-century British Arctic explorer, has been reinterpreted and reworked by poets, novelists, essayists, and dramatists for more than a century and half. This thesis is an attempt to discover the character and significance of the literary legacy of Sir John Franklin by exploring authors' uses of four common tropes: food, sex, death, and quest. In analyzing these tropes, this thesis focuses primarily on five works of contemporary Canadian literature: Margaret Atwood's short story, "The Age of Lead"; Gwendolyn MacEwen's radio verse play, Terror and Erebus; Geoff Kavanagh's play, Ditch; Mordecai Richler's novel, Solomon Gursky …

In The Dead Season, Sonja Hansard-Weiner May 2003

In The Dead Season, Sonja Hansard-Weiner

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the Dead Season is a manuscript of poetry that explores, through family narrative, the tensions between ignorance and truth, between honor and mendacity, between violation and veneration, between love and loss, between grief and transcendence. Set in rural Texas, the poems in this collection describe a harsh and unforgiving landscape seen largely, though not exclusively, through the eyes of a central child narrator. Rattlesnakes, tarantulas, drought, flood, birth, death, the poems present everyday occurrences and suggest that we often experience events before we have the context, knowledge, or emotional maturity to make sense of them in any reasonable manner. …

Ecomorphology Of Bats: Comparative And Experimental Approaches Relating Structural Design To Ecology, Sharon M. Swartz, Patricia W. Freeman, Elizabeth F. Stockwell May 2003

Ecomorphology Of Bats: Comparative And Experimental Approaches Relating Structural Design To Ecology, Sharon M. Swartz, Patricia W. Freeman, Elizabeth F. Stockwell

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The past several decades have seen the beginning of integration of discoveries in the ecology and morphology of bats into an ecomorphological whole that promises to be greater than the sum of its parts. However, achieving this integration is challenging. Each of the elements of this interdisciplinary field is, in itself, avast and complex subject. This book is a testament to the breadth and depth of ecological studies of bats. Morphological studies now extend be- yond descriptive anatomy in both outlook and method, and incorporate, for example, aspects of genetics, physiology, solid and fluid mechanics, and developmental biology. There is …

The Severe Weather Knowledge Of College Students In The State Of Mississippi, David Joseph Nussbaum May 2003

The Severe Weather Knowledge Of College Students In The State Of Mississippi, David Joseph Nussbaum

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify how knowledgeable the students of Mississippi are of severe weather. The state of Mississippi is ranked second in the nation with the total number of deaths per state per year. The state also ranks among the top 10 of all states with number of tornadoes per state and cost of damage per state. Considering the facts mentioned above, a study was designed to discover if the students were taught severe weather awareness while they progressed through their twelve years of elementary and secondary schooling. A survey was created through the research of …

Tornadoes In Mississippi: A County By County Community Risk Assessment, Renee Nicole Clark May 2003

Tornadoes In Mississippi: A County By County Community Risk Assessment, Renee Nicole Clark

Theses and Dissertations

Mississippi leads the nation in tornado deaths per unit area. Previous risk assessment studies have indicated a connection between housing type and fatalities but have focused only on a national scale. The purpose of this study was to provide a local scale risk assessment for Mississippi. Each county?s individual tornado risks were combined with US Census county housing data for each decade from 1960-2000. The study found that the comparable risk to life and property is highest in Harrison County and Hinds County, but with proper shelters and community planning this risk would be mitigated.

A Water Quality Evaluation Of The Heron Haven Wetland In Omaha, Nebraska., Gabrielle Christine Collins May 2003

A Water Quality Evaluation Of The Heron Haven Wetland In Omaha, Nebraska., Gabrielle Christine Collins

Student Work

Introduction: Wetlands are ubiquitous but extremely variable and important elements of the landscape that are characterized by water saturation for at least part of the year. They may receive water from groundwater sources but many are recharged only from rainfall and surface runoff. Wetlands are found in most climates and in widely varying sizes and topographic settings. The soil/substrate, water chemistry, vegetation, groundwater, and other factors also vary (Environmental Protection Agency, 1999). Cowardin et al. (1979) describe wetlands as transitional lands between terrestrial and aquatic systems where the water table is at or near the surface. They contain hydrophytes, or …

Processing For Image Fusion Using Independent Componen, Ricky L. Fielding, Jay K. Denison, Doran Baker, Jake Gunther May 2003

Processing For Image Fusion Using Independent Componen, Ricky L. Fielding, Jay K. Denison, Doran Baker, Jake Gunther

Utah Space Grant Consortium

one of the most challenging areas in data fusion is efficient abstraction of relevant information from data sets. In remote sensing, this is particularly important due to the amount of detail that is desired from relatively noisy measurements of sensors with limited capability. The goal is to identify multiple materials that are embedded in a particular pixel and thus, provide for more effective image fusion. However, without prior knowledge of a scene, it is difficult, if not impossible, to identify and classify the number of separate sources in a scene of interest. To address this issue, a method of using …
