802.11b Wireless Network Visualization And Radiowave Propagation Modeling, Chris Lentz Jun 2003

802.11b Wireless Network Visualization And Radiowave Propagation Modeling, Chris Lentz

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This paper outlines the methods of creating detailed coverage maps of 802.11b networks, with an emphasis on minimizing the expenses and time involved. The goal of this work is to develop and present a streamlined, reproducible approach to wireless visualization as well as techniques for predicting coverage area before conducting network installations. After evaluating these coverage maps, a repeated series of field measurements will be checked against interpolated values in order to improve techniques for extrapolation of data for unsampled regions. If successful, these extrapolation techniques will provide additional guidelines for, and assist modeling of, new wireless network installations. However, …

Why Isn't There More Financial Intermediation In Developing Countries?, Michael Kevane, Jonathon Conning Jun 2003

Why Isn't There More Financial Intermediation In Developing Countries?, Michael Kevane, Jonathon Conning

Economics

This paper proposes to organize thinking about the opportunities for improving and extending financial markets and safety nets for the poor, by focusing on factors that may explain why the linkage of local financial networks and safety nets with the larger economy often fails or is incomplete. Understanding the nature of these impediments is the first step in proposing policies to help promote more effective linkage and intermediation. We propose four explanations for the slowness of adoption of intermediation (high costs of delegated monitoring aggravated by limited intermediary capital; lock-in and crowding out effects from local insurance arrangements, social norms …

Variations Sur La Langue De Molière; L’Enseignementdu Français Aux États-Unis, Thomas C. Spear Jun 2003

Variations Sur La Langue De Molière; L’Enseignementdu Français Aux États-Unis, Thomas C. Spear

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

French has always been among the top foreign languages taught in the American university, even if Spanish occupies the first place. As a result of the social transformations of the 1960s and 1970s and the development of new fields of learning, changes were also introduced gradually into French department programs to include francophone literatures, although in a manner that some have deemed disturbing.

This openness, which is not found in France, has brought about the creation of new faculty positions, some of which are occupied by teachers and writers from Africa and the Caribbean who are making a significant contribution …

De L’Aliénation À La Libération, Alexie Tcheuyap Jun 2003

De L’Aliénation À La Libération, Alexie Tcheuyap

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This essay addresses the issue of education in pre and post-colonial Africa. It examines the ideological discourses, challenges and consequences associated with the adoption of western education in African countries. Based on novels and films, some of which are set in universities, the article analyses the effects of violence and irrelevant syllabi on African education, and argues that in order for knowledge to serve as a tool for real liberation, it has to be relevant to the social environment. It contends further that, paradoxically, even colonial education can contribute towards the liberation of Africans from some problematic aspects of their …

Contribution Of Ivan Gams To The Development Of Slovene Karst Terminology, Jurij Kunaver

KIP Articles

The stage of the scientific terminology is by all means one of the indicators of the development of the scientific branch, to which it belongs. Therefore the publishing of the Slovene karst terminology in 1973 was an important event for further development of Slovene karstology. Still more, the efforts for a comparative national karst terminologies of former common state Yugoslavia were successfully achieved in publishing the Serbian and Croatian karst terminology also, a year later. In fact, the former Association of the geographical societies of Yugoslavia decided to give full support to its subcommission in preparing the project Karst terminology …

Nebraska Rural Physician Satisfaction & Retention Survey: Appendix A: Survey (With Results), Suzanne M. Minarick, John C. Allen

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

This paper examines the factors that influence the satisfaction and retention of family and general practice physicians in Nebraska’s 87 non-metropolitan counties. Extensive research has previously been done in the area of rural physician recruitment. This research project compares the existing research with current trends in physician recruitment. In addition, it provides further insight into the less-thoroughly studied area of rural physician retention.

Satisfaction with practice-related and lifestyle factors is measured and compared with the level of influence of those same factors in the initial practice selection decision. Demographic characteristics are also considered in the analysis of data and resultant …

"War If Necessary, But Not Necessarily War”: The Canadian Paradox And “Iraqi Freedom", Marc A. Ouellette Jun 2003

"War If Necessary, But Not Necessarily War”: The Canadian Paradox And “Iraqi Freedom", Marc A. Ouellette

English Faculty Publications

The Canadian refusal to join the U.S. led “coalition of the willing” does not mark the first time the nation has chosen not to follow its “traditional allies” into a foolish, ego-driven, imperialistic and vengeful conflict. Indeed, Canada’s record in these matters is flawless. Peter C. Newman points out that “we went along with most presidential global adventures, except the Vietnam War. The other significant time we parted company with the Yanks was over our drive to impose economic sanctions on apartheid South Africa, a policy we initiated and successfully defended despite American objections.” In fact, the objections to this …

Ownership And Stewardship: Attitudes Among Michigan’S Voters Impacting Opposition To Great Lakes Water Diversions, Bruce A. Nanzer Jun 2003

Ownership And Stewardship: Attitudes Among Michigan’S Voters Impacting Opposition To Great Lakes Water Diversions, Bruce A. Nanzer

Dissertations

The problem addressed by this research can be demonstrated through the following scenario: If we were to ask randomly chosen voters in the state of Michigan if they possessed sufficient knowledge of Great Lakes water diversion policy, the answer would likely be no. Yet, if after a short description of the purpose for this type of policy, the voter was questioned about supporting such actions he or she would likely voice strong support for strategies that would prevent water diversions.

The objective of this research was to understand why Michigan's voters would readily voice opposition to Great Lakes water diversions …

Trust Me, I'M A Judge: Why Binding Judicial Notice Of Jurisdictional Facts Violates The Right To Jury Trial, William M. Carter Jr. Jun 2003

Trust Me, I'M A Judge: Why Binding Judicial Notice Of Jurisdictional Facts Violates The Right To Jury Trial, William M. Carter Jr.

Missouri Law Review

This Article contends that the predominant practice of federal courts of completely removing the jurisdictional element from the jury violates the Sixth Amendment right to jury trial and Rule 201. Part II of this Article discusses the problems raised by binding judicial notice of the jurisdictional element of federal criminal offenses. Part III gives an overview of the factual, constitutional, and statutory prerequisites for land to fall within the special territorial jurisdiction of the United States. Part IV briefly describes the circumstances in which courts may properly take judicial notice under Rule 201. Part V discusses the requirements for judicial …

Maquila Employment And Fertility In Mexicali, Mexico: A Study Of The Dynamics Of Productive And Reproductive Relations, Robert Fiala, Susan Tiano Jun 2003

Maquila Employment And Fertility In Mexicali, Mexico: A Study Of The Dynamics Of Productive And Reproductive Relations, Robert Fiala, Susan Tiano

Research Papers

Data on 193 women working in Mexicali, Mexico during a period of rapid expansion of female employment in Mexico's maquila industry in the mid-1980s is used to examine a model of the dynamics of production and reproduction derived from developmental and critical feminist perspectives on gender and development. Analyses confirm most predictions of the model, suggesting the utility of both perspectives. Results indicate that while fertility shapes the type of employment a woman acquires, type of employment has little effect on subsequent fertility. Unanticipated results regarding education point to the importance of considering elements often discussed under the rubric of …

Y'All Better Ask Somebody, Frank Bramlett Jun 2003

Y'All Better Ask Somebody, Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

One of the ways that linguists think about language is through geographical distribution, commonly known as dialects. It's very easy to think about geography because of the wide range of locales in which English is spoken. Due to conquest and colonization, English is now a world language. There's British English, Australian English, and Nigerian English, among many others. In the continental U.S., most people readily identify a number of regional dialects: “Midwestern," "New England," "Southern." While some people might call them accents, linguists distinguish between dialect and accent. The term accent refers solely to the way words are …
