L’Aventure Du Discours Critique, Justin K. Bisanswa Dec 2003

L’Aventure Du Discours Critique, Justin K. Bisanswa

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

The text traces the course of African Literature’s critical adventure. For a long time, studies have been focused on African identity. The critic is often ethnologic, anthropological, cultural and attracted by exoticism. The critic is also attentive to everything that indicates the difference with occidental culture and without which the African text would only be an outline. There is also the frequent intrusion of empty concepts in African Literature criticism (for example : tradition, relatives, ethnic group, oral character, traditional religion, African rhythm, solidarity, communion between the living and the dead). From the criticism of humor and sources, to criticism …

Federal Tenure Denial Litigation Involving Private Colleges And Universities, Robert P. Hamill Dec 2003

Federal Tenure Denial Litigation Involving Private Colleges And Universities, Robert P. Hamill

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since 1972, the volume of federal litigation involving faculty and their institutions has escalated. Tenure denial litigation, too, has increased. Prior to 1972, there were no published federal tenure denial decisions involving private colleges and universities. Since 1972, the number of published tenure denial decisions in the private institutional setting has increased steadily. Higher education administrators need to understand the risks that are involved in the tenure review process. These risks include the possibility of a protracted and costly lawsuit. Such a lawsuit could result in having key administrators spend enormous amounts of time preparing for trial and testifying in …

Geography Of White Supremacist Groups In The United States: Gis And Mapping, Catherine Lisa Kostyn Dec 2003

Geography Of White Supremacist Groups In The United States: Gis And Mapping, Catherine Lisa Kostyn

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to examine some of the common stereotypes related to the distribution of white supremacist groups in the United States; that the distribution of such groups are driven by education levels, poverty rates, income levels and the presence of an immigrant population. Research conducted by police departments such as the Chicago, IL and San Diego, CA police departments show no correlation between socioeconomic factors and the spatial distribution of such groups. This thesis examines the question at a national scale, and county level for a limited number of states. Statistical analysis and mapping were chosen …

Identification Of Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Secondary Succession Changes In Altamira, Brazil: Integrating Remote Sensing And Gis Technology, Hui Li

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There has been extensive use of remote sensing to study secondary succession of moist tropical forests in the Amazon Basin. However, scientists have not totally understood the dynamic processes of secondary succession of Amazon forests. A lack of consensus remains about what is the best approach for biomass estimation in the Amazon Basin using remotely sensed data. It is not clear which spectral wavelength bands have the best relationship with biomass values and what are the specific relationships between biomass and TM satellite radiance. The strategies in this research, based on analysis of detailed ground-based data and satellite TM image …

Satellite Estimation Of Population And Housing Density In Marion County, Indiana, Guiying Li

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The world population and associated housing area have experienced a high growth rate in the past century and generated great pressure on Earth resources and environments. Accurate and timely population and housing estimates and distributions become important for many applications, such as regional design and development, policy-making, etc. This research reviewed four categories of methods to estimate population and housing using remotely sensed data in a previous study and explored the potentials of integration of Landsat ETM+ data with census data to estimate population and housing density in Marion County, Indiana. Spectral signatures, principal components, vegetation indices, fraction images, texture, …

The Effect Of Prescribed Burns On Cation Exchange Capacity In An Oak Savanna, Christopher Michael Gentry Dec 2003

The Effect Of Prescribed Burns On Cation Exchange Capacity In An Oak Savanna, Christopher Michael Gentry

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources estimates that fire-maintained, tallgrass savannas once covered approximately 15% oflndiana. During the 1800's, settlers cleared savannas for their rich soils, which are well suited for agricultural use, and fire was suppressed from the remaining savannas because of the threat to farmland. Today, prescribed bums are being used in savannas as a management tool to reduce competition from non-native species, encourage community density, and promote patch dynamics. This research examines how fire affects Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC) in post fire soil samples. CEC is an important soil characteristic that helps to describe soil fertility. With …

Medicare+Choice In Palm Beach: Watching And Waiting?, Lauren Hersch Nicholas, Geraldine Dallek, Brian Biles

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Under the Medicare+Choice program, firms have been able to offer products on a county by county basis, making participation decisions based on factors such as county payment rate, strength of local provider networks, and beneficiary's affinity for managed care. In 2003, Medicare+Choice payment rates paid to plans range from $495 in rural floor counties to a high of $872 in Staten Island, NY. Consequently, there is large national variation in benefits, premiums, and plan participation. A recent site visit to Palm Beach county and neighboring Miami-Dade highlighted many of the differences between counties which may pose challenges to firms trying …

Bus Transit And Land Use: Illuminating The Interaction, Andy Johnson Dec 2003

Bus Transit And Land Use: Illuminating The Interaction, Andy Johnson

Journal of Public Transportation

Attracting people to public transit in urban areas has proven to be a difficult task indeed. Recent research on the transportation–land use connection has suggested that transit use can be increased through transit-friendly land use planning. While significant evidence exists that a relationship between land use and transit is apparent, the exact nature of the relationship remains ambiguous. Despite the murky nature of the relationship, many practitioners and researchers have asserted claims regarding land use policy, namely TOD, and its effect on travel. This article examines the effect of land use, socioeconomics, and bus transit service on transit demand in …

Diversity Matters: Race, Gender And Ethnicity In Legal Education., Nancy E. Dowd, Kenneth B. Nunn, Jane E. Pendergast Dec 2003

Diversity Matters: Race, Gender And Ethnicity In Legal Education., Nancy E. Dowd, Kenneth B. Nunn, Jane E. Pendergast

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article presents more evidence of the inequality that persists in legal education for students. Based on a survey of University of Florida law students conducted in 2001, this study reaffirms the existence of differential experience and an inegalitarian culture in legal education. However, it also demonstrates the importance of diversity and the recognition by a significant majority of students of the value of race and gender pluralism. These competing findings provide a clear guide to the future direction of legal education.

Telric Vs. Universal Service: A Takings Violation?, Stuart Buck Dec 2003

Telric Vs. Universal Service: A Takings Violation?, Stuart Buck

Federal Communications Law Journal

While the Telecommunications Act of 1996 has had a profound positive impact on many sectors of the communications industry in the United States, local phone companies have recently faced a serious dilemma under a provision of the Act known as TELRIC. In this article, Stuart Buck presents a current analysis of the position of the telephone company and its struggle to meet costs under the TELRIC structure. The author argues that by forcing regional phone operators to grant wholesale pricing to competitors under TELRIC, while simultaneously maintaining Universal Service requirements of reduced-rate phone access to remote customers, the local phone …

Using Spreadsheets In Geoscience Education: Survey And Annotated Bibliography Of Articles In The Journal Of Geoscience Education Through 2003, Beth Fratesi, H. L. Vacher

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

Thirty-eight papers published in the Journal of Geoscience Education ( JGE) from 1989 through 2003 explicitly use or recommend the use of spreadsheets as part of classroom or field exercises, projects, or entire courses. Many of the papers include the spreadsheets, and some include the equations. The papers demonstrate how spreadsheets allow students to explore a subject through problem-oriented, interactive, and quantitative exercises. We provide an annotated bibliography and classify the 38 JGE papers by spreadsheet use, mathematics skill area, and geologic subdiscipline. Our discussion of five selected articles — abundance of elements in the Earth’s crust; directional properties of …

A Fresh Look At Amazon Indians: Karl Von Den Steinen And Curt Nimuendajú, Giants Of Brazilian Anthropology, John Hemming Dec 2003

A Fresh Look At Amazon Indians: Karl Von Den Steinen And Curt Nimuendajú, Giants Of Brazilian Anthropology, John Hemming

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

This essay examines two German anthropologists who changed the style of Brazilian anthropology.   Karl von den Steinen made first contact with eight peoples of the upper Xingu in the 1880s.  His anthropological observations were accurate and valuable, and he was the first to describe indigenous people as individual human beings.   Curt Nimuendajú also had no formal training, but was on an anthropological or archaeological expedition every year between 1905–1945, produced a prodigious volume of writing, studied shattered tribal remnants as well as newly contacted peoples, and was a pioneer in championing indigenous rights.   Both were seminal figures in the study …

Evicting A Neighbor: Health, Power And Discourse In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Nelson Class-Meléndez Dec 2003

Evicting A Neighbor: Health, Power And Discourse In Vieques, Puerto Rico, Nelson Class-Meléndez

Masters Theses

This thesis examines the two years that followed the death of a civilian, David Sanes on April 1999, when a Marine Corps F-18 pilot accidentally dropped two 500- pound bombs on an observation post on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques. Following the death of Sanes and for the first time in contemporary history, all competing political parties, the Viequenses, and religious leaders apparently reached an initial consensus that resulted in a series of efforts to evict the Navy from Vieques.

Importantly, this coalition adopted an environmental discourse that is essentially anti-Navy. This thesis draws upon this anti-Navy discourse to …
