Genetic Similarity Among Pheromone And Voltinism Races Of Ostrinia Nubilalis (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), P. C. R. G. Marcon, David B. Taylor, C. E. Mason, R. L. Hellmich, Blair Siegfried

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The genetic variability of seven European corn borer populations, Ostrinia nubilalis, from North America and Europe was assessed by polymerase chain reaction- restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCRRFLP) analysis and DNA sequencing. The nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) region (≈ 500 base pair [bp]) and four mitochondrial (mtDNA) regions (1550 bp total) were examined. The smartweed borer, Ostrinia obumbratalis, and south-Western corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella, were used for comparisons. Of 106 restriction sites identified (80 in mtDNA and 26 in ITS-1), none differentiated geographical populations, pheromone races, or voltine ecotypes of the European corn borer. The …

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

As part of the World Climate Research Program's (WCRPs) Global Energy and Water-Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Continental-scale International Project (GCIP), a preliminary water and energy budget synthesis (WEBS) was developed for the period 1996–1999 from the “best available” observations and models. Besides this summary paper, a companion CD-ROM with more extensive discussion, figures, tables, and raw data is available to the interested researcher from the GEWEX project office, the GAPP project office, or the first author. An updated online version of the CD-ROM is also available at http://ecpc.ucsd.edu/gcip/webs.htm/. Observations cannot adequately characterize or “close” budgets since too many fundamental processes …

Advances In Satellite Radiometry For The Surveillance Of Surface Temperatures, Ocean Eddies And Upwelling Processes In The Gulf Of Mexico Using Goes-8 Measurements During Summer, Nan Walker, Soe Myint, Adele Babin, Alaric Haag

Faculty Publications

GOES-8 satellite infrared (IR) measurements have been under-utilized in oceanographic research, although they provide several advantages over measurements from other sensors such as the NOAA AVHRR. Frequent coverage (48 times/day) over large regions, low noise in the mid- IR channel, and sole use of nighttime data have enabled the development of improved techniques for producing "de-clouded" images and calculating accurate SSTs (with RMS errors < 0.5°C), over cloudy and humid regions such as the Gulf of Mexico. Animations of SST composite images reveal movements of the Loop Current, its frontal eddies and coastal upwelling even during summer months. GOES-12 and future GOES imagers for the next decade are missing the 12 μm channel; however, this study demonstrates that the mid-IR channel is even more useful than previously thought.

Gender, Spatial Learning Trials, And Object Recall., Tifani R. Hite Aug 2003

Gender, Spatial Learning Trials, And Object Recall., Tifani R. Hite

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous researchers have reported women doing better than men in object recall. The current study tested for gender differences in object recall over three memorization trials using gender neutral stimuli. Fifty men and 53 women viewed pictures of 60 objects (15 in each of four quadrants) for one minute, and then had three minutes to recall as many objects and locations as they could. This procedure was followed over three trials. Women performed better than men, and the difference increased across trials. Training was successful as participants recalled significantly more objects and locations on trial 3 than on trial 1. …

Geographical Change In Religious Denomination Affiliation In Mississippi, 1970-2000, Dixie L. Cartwright Aug 2003

Geographical Change In Religious Denomination Affiliation In Mississippi, 1970-2000, Dixie L. Cartwright

Theses and Dissertations

The religious landscape of Mississippi has long been dominated by evangelical Protestant denominations, most prominently the Southern Baptist and United Methodist. These two denominations have led the state in total number of churches and church members since the early 20th century, with few affiliations contending for their numbers. However, as the aggregate population of the state increases for the first time since the 1930?s, these traditional denominational patterns have been subjected to shifts in demographic conditions occurring throughout the state. To evaluate the impacts of demographic changes on traditional geographic religious patterns, an evaluation comparing religious and demographic variables for …

Staying Longer At School And Absenteeism: Evidence From Australian Research And The Longitudinal Surveys Of Australian Youth., Sheldon Rothman

LSAY Conference Papers

Youth in Transition (YIT), a program of longitudinal surveys conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), began in 1978. The program was designed to trace national samples of 6 000 young people who were born in 1961 and had participated as 14-year-olds in the Australian Studies in School Performance in 1975 (Keeves & Bourke, 1976). New samples were added in 1981, 1985 and 1989, based on cohorts of young people born in 1965, 1970 and 1975, respectively. Data were collected on each of the first three cohorts until the mid-1990s; data collection from the 1975 birth cohort ended …
