New Surveillance, The , Sonia K. Katyal Jan 2003

New Surveillance, The , Sonia K. Katyal

Faculty Scholarship

A few years ago, it was fanciful to imagine a world where intellectual property owners - such as record companies, software owners, and publishers - were capable of invading the most sacred areas of the home in order to track, deter, and control uses of their products. Yet, today, strategies of copyright enforcement have rapidly multiplied, each strategy more invasive than the last. This new surveillance exposes the paradoxical nature of the Internet: It offers both the consumer and creator a seemingly endless capacity for human expression - a virtual marketplace of ideas - alongside an insurmountable array of capacities …

Small Businesses Online : An In-Depth Analysis, Jason M. Tithof Jan 2003

Small Businesses Online : An In-Depth Analysis, Jason M. Tithof

Honors Capstones

This analysis identifies the factors to consider when contemplating the decision to put a small business online. This includes identifying the steps involved in the process, including building the website, designing the website, and maintaining the website. Other factors, such as cost, competition, advertising, and the Internet economy are also considered. Combed throughout the analysis are results of an investigation of small businesses and their online ventures. Results indicate that, with the advances in technology and available Internet services, small businesses readily have all the necessary tools to create an online presence. Many businesses have profited from these tools. However, …

Cross-Shore Sediment Transport Processes On Natural Beaches And Their Relation To Sand Bar Migration Patterns, Ismael De Jesus Marino Tapia Jan 2003

Cross-Shore Sediment Transport Processes On Natural Beaches And Their Relation To Sand Bar Migration Patterns, Ismael De Jesus Marino Tapia

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

During the last two decadess everalf ield studiesh ave shown a clear pattern in the cross-shores ediment transport processes on beaches. Outside the surf zone, the stronger onshore velocities under unbroken (Stokes-type) wave crests, produce a dominant onshore sediment transport. Inside the surf zone, strong offshore-directed mean currents (undertow) drive sediments offshore. It is of great interest for the scientific community to verify further the consistency of this pattern under different morphodynamic conditions, understand the underlying physics and quantify/parameterise this behaviour in order to improve the understanding of cross-shore sediment transport and simplify the modelling of beach profile change. The …

Karst Types In Bulgaria, Dora Angelova Jan 2003

Karst Types In Bulgaria, Dora Angelova

KIP Articles

The karst in Bulgaria occupies an area of 26 170 km 2 or 22.7 % of the territory of the country. The karst water resources are estimated to be 2.3 billion m 3 or 11.6 % of the total water resources of the country. The interest in karst in Bulgaria has become higher during the last years because there are a number of practical problems that have to be solved. Karst in Bulgaria is characterized by great diversity due to the complex combination of factors (geological, tectonic, geomorphologic, hydrological and hydrogeological, climatic, etc.) and to the geodynamic development of this …

The Structure Of Communication As A Challenge For Theology, Paul A. Soukup Jan 2003

The Structure Of Communication As A Challenge For Theology, Paul A. Soukup

Communication

Even more than any content of communication, its structures influence theology by forming the framework for thinking about and sharing reflections on religious experience. This essay examines three characteristic, but often overlooked, communication structures: oral vs. written and printed communication and the contemporary move to "secondary oral" styles; communication technology's sense of place; and the uses of visual space as guides to the interpretation of experience. Since each of these structures shapes theology, a more conscious awareness of them challenges theology to take the role of communication more seriously.

Globalization In A Fallen World: Redeeming Dust, Emily A. Hartigan Jan 2003

Globalization In A Fallen World: Redeeming Dust, Emily A. Hartigan

Faculty Articles

The paradigm used in discussions about academic globalization is the “rational” discourse of the late twentieth century. This paradigm is manifested in university and political-cultural commentary in the United States and Great Britain. The term “globalization” immediately evokes a paradox. The paradox of the globe is it risks confusing itself with the universe. One key axis of of the paradox is between “good” globalization and “bad” globalization, another between the “is” and the “ought” of globalization.

A world-wide culture, democracy, or economy is inherently fallen. Attending to the forces that would pull us back together is one key to overcome …

Coca Cola Bottling Of Central South Dakota: Sales Center Warehouse Inventory Database, Kristian C. D. Palmer Jan 2003

Coca Cola Bottling Of Central South Dakota: Sales Center Warehouse Inventory Database, Kristian C. D. Palmer

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Coca-Cola Bottling of Central South Dakota (CCBCSD), which is comprised of four separate sales centers and warehouses, and is owned by Chesterman Company of Sioux City Iowa, has experienced radical (month to month) discrepancies in inventory tracking and charges over the past 12 to 32 months. To gain an understanding of individual sales center inventory trends involving shipments both into and out of sales centers, as well as sales and damaged/destroyed products, CCBCSD has determined the need for an onsite inventory tracking database. Three of the four sales centers maintain Microsoft Windows 98 personal computers with Microsoft Office 2000 Professional …

Protestant Language Use In 17th Century Slovakia In A Diglossia Framework, Mark Richard Lauersdorf

Linguistics Faculty Publications

This article presents a discussion of several issues that are central to the ongoing, larger sociolinguistic investigation of the history of standard language development in pre-codification (15th-18th century) Slovakia. It is, in a sense, a position paper, laying out a basic theoretical framework and methodology for historical sociolinguistic research on Slovak standard language development and outlining an investigation of the 17th century linguistic situation among the Slovak Protestants within this framework and methodology.

Risk, Transaction Costs, And Tax Assignment: Government Finance In The Ottoman Empire, Metin M. Cosgel, Thomas J. Miceli Jan 2003

Risk, Transaction Costs, And Tax Assignment: Government Finance In The Ottoman Empire, Metin M. Cosgel, Thomas J. Miceli

Economics Working Papers

Risk and transaction costs often provide competing explanations of institutional outcomes. In this paper we argue that they offer opposing predictions regarding the assignment of fixed and variable taxes in a multi-tiered governmental structure. While the central government can pool regional risks from variable taxes, local governments can measure variable tax bases more accurately. Evidence on tax assignment from the mid-sixteenth century Ottoman Empire supports the transaction cost explanation, suggesting that risk matters less because insurance can be obtained in a variety of ways.
