Could Mammoth Cave Be Reduced To A Single Equation?, Chris Groves, Joe Meiman Jan 2003

Could Mammoth Cave Be Reduced To A Single Equation?, Chris Groves, Joe Meiman

Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Since the evolution of any cave system is largely deterministic, in theory the processes responsible for this development could be described mathematically. In a practical sense, we will never have such a model to realistically describe the evolution of the Mammoth Cave System in detail. However, the search itself can provide a framework within which to understand what processes areimportant. This can guide the design of rate process studies that would eventually be coupled to provide a comprehensive understanding of the cave's evolution. Data gaps, as well, are identified during this process. The geometry of a cave system depends on …

Development Of A Gis Geodatabase As A Tool For Analyzing Spatial Relationships In The Species Distributions Of West Virginia Fishes, Nathan D. Bowe Jan 2003

Development Of A Gis Geodatabase As A Tool For Analyzing Spatial Relationships In The Species Distributions Of West Virginia Fishes, Nathan D. Bowe

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

One of the most complete references to date of fish species distribution in West Virginia is a 1995 book entitled “The Fishes of West Virginia” (Stauffer, et al.). In this project, geographic information systems (GIS) and relational database technology have been utilized to adapt that reference into a system where spatially arranged collection site features are related to distribution data through a series of common fields among tables in a geodatabase. The geodatabase is stored in an MDB-formatted database management system (DBMS) which is readable by Microsoft Access and useful in its own right as a means to query distribution …

Partial Transport In A Natural Gravel-Bed Channel, J. K. Haschenburger, Peter Wilcock Jan 2003

Partial Transport In A Natural Gravel-Bed Channel, J. K. Haschenburger, Peter Wilcock

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Partial transport is documented in the gravel bed channel of Carnation Creek using magnetically tagged stones. For four flood peaks the active proportion of surface grains was used to map streambed areas into distinct units of three different levels of grain entrainment. In partially mobile regions of the bed, the active proportion of surface grains declines with grain size. As flow increases, areas of partial transport grow at the expense of inactive areas and fully active areas replace areas with partial mobility. Approximately 25–50% of the bed remained in a state of partial mobility during a flood with a 2-year …

High-Tech Transportation Corridors Are In Vogue: Proposed Federal Transportation Policy Amendments, Clovia Hamilton

Winthrop Faculty and Staff Publications

When there is an economic downturn, cities are forced to develop a strategy to revitalize. Increasing the transfer of high technology into the marketplace stimulates the economy. High tech industries are industries that include relatively high percentages of scientific and technical workers, or industries that make relatively large expenditures in research and development. "[I]n difficult economic times, political stakeholders in the technology transfer process usually view success in economic impact terms, and often from short-term and parochial perspectives-how many jobs in my state next year?" Examples include the expansion of the suburban space economy in the 1980s that produced new …

Impact Of Globalisation On Information Seeking: The Role Of Cultural Lenses And Indigenous Knowledge, Ardis Hanson Jan 2003

Impact Of Globalisation On Information Seeking: The Role Of Cultural Lenses And Indigenous Knowledge, Ardis Hanson

Dean's Office Publications

How can understanding cultural lenses help us rethink constructs that have been taken for granted and assist in identifying new problems of significance in the delivery of information and the establishment of discrete, culturally based cyber-communities? With the increased access of global information, a critical question is how does an individual (or political entity) acquire information that is bias-free as possible that can be reviewed and interpreted in the appropriate context (indigenous knowledge). This paper attempts to provide a discussion of cultural lenses and indigenous knowledge in the development of information seeking behaviours and the design of information systems.

Wild Horses And Burros In The United States, Allen T. Rutberg Jan 2003

Wild Horses And Burros In The United States, Allen T. Rutberg

State of the Animals 2003

Treatment of wild horses and burros has improved remarkably over the last fifty years. In the mid-twentieth century, free-ranging horses and burros suffered horribly at the hands of “mustangers” who captured them at will and whim, sometimes using the most brutal of techniques, including aerial pursuit and shooting or crippling key herd members. The horses were packed into livestock trucks hurt, bleeding, and exhausted, and shipped to slaughter without stopping for rest or watering (Ryden 1999). Unprotected by law, only the good will of a few ranchers protected these abused animals. Public awareness of the plight of the wild horses …

Nest Building In Captive Gorilla Gorilla Gorilla, Kristen E. Lukas, Tara S. Stoinski, Kyle Burks, Rebecca Snyder, Sarah Bexell, Terry L. Maple

Sentience Collection

Although various aspects of gorilla nest building have been described in wild populations, nest-building behavior of captive gorillas has not been subject to much scientific review. We observed nest building in 17 gorillas during three periods: summer baseline, winter baseline, and winter treatment, in which the amount of available nesting material was doubled. We conducted observations exclusively in the indoor holding area in the hour following evening departure of animal care staff. During baseline, gorillas engaged in nest-building on 3.1% of scans and were on a constructed nest on 27.9% of scans. Overall, gorillas spent significantly more time on elevated …

King René And The Women Of Anjou: The Myth And Reality Of Gender In Fifteenth-Century France, Hilary C. Smith Jan 2003

King René And The Women Of Anjou: The Myth And Reality Of Gender In Fifteenth-Century France, Hilary C. Smith

Humanities | Print Theses

Gender stereotypes in fifteenth-century France depicted women as inferior, weak, and dangerous to men. Noblewomen in this society were constrained by these stereotypes which were promoted and reinforced by religious notions, literary motifs and the legal system. King Rene's experience of women was entirely contradictory to the image of women presented in medieval culture. A key figure in the political and cultural events of the fifteenth century, Rene was surrounded by powerful and influential women whose lives had little in common with medieval definitions of female identity. This paper examines stereotypical depictions of women in medieval society and in the …

The Is Core - Xi: Sorting Out Issues About The Core, Scope, And Identity Of The Is Field, Steven Alter Jan 2003

The Is Core - Xi: Sorting Out Issues About The Core, Scope, And Identity Of The Is Field, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Debates about the core and the scope of the IS field and about whether the core and scope are related to a crisis in the field have smoldered for many years. This article is a response to ten articles submitted by members of the CAIS Editorial Board who accepted an invitation to contribute to a debate about the core and scope of the IS field. Those articles were written as responses to Benbasat and Zmud’s [2003] article “The Identity Crisis Within the IS Discipline: Defining and Communicating the Discipline’s Core Properties” and my rebuttal [Alter 2003b] entitled “Sidestepping the IT …

School District Enrollment Forecast Reports

This report provides a school Enrollment Forecast, including demographic information, for Portland Public Schools. The report considers several factors that are likely to affect the school district's enrollments between the present and 2010, including the future number of births, net migrants, and the proportion of school-age children and youth enrolled in the public schools. This is the third annual report that forecasts future enrollments for the Portland Public Schools. Previous annual reports were based on October 1999, 2000, and 2001 enrollments; this report relies on October 2002 enrollments. To take into account a variety of demographic and enrollment possibilities, this …

Modernist Space: Willa Cather’S Environmental Imagination In Context, Guy J. Reynolds Jan 2003

Modernist Space: Willa Cather’S Environmental Imagination In Context, Guy J. Reynolds

Department of English: Faculty Publications

One of the things that Cather’s writing teaches us is that space, especially “natural” space, is always mediated, always shaped. Cather’s own framing of nature was informed by some very specific, historically particular ideas. The modernity of Cather’s environmental imagination is illustrated by a comparison between her fictionalization of American spaces and Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural formation of space. An “environmental imagination” is at once an imagination of the environment and an imagination formed or created by the environment. Cather worked repeatedly toward this doubled state, finding a heightened, mystical state-of-being when we are both formed by and in mastery …

Toward A Symbiosis Of Ecology And Justice: Water And Land Conflicts In Frank Waters, Johns Nichols, And Jimmy Santiago Baca, Thomas Lynch Jan 2003

Toward A Symbiosis Of Ecology And Justice: Water And Land Conflicts In Frank Waters, Johns Nichols, And Jimmy Santiago Baca, Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The literary form that dominates writing, and thinking, in the American West is what has become known, definitively, as "the Western." The all-too-familiar narrative describes the advance of Anglo-Saxon pioneers into a primitive and untamed West, spreading the forces of civilization in their wake. A countertradition, however, is prevalent in the Southwest. What we might suitably call "the Southwestern" describes the incursion of an aggressive foreign culture into an already settled region. In this narrative, the conflict is not over how to impose culture and tame and settle the land, but how to protect the culture that already exists and …

Superfund Vs. Mega-Sites: The Coeur D'Alene River Basin Story, Clifford J. Villa Jan 2003

Superfund Vs. Mega-Sites: The Coeur D'Alene River Basin Story, Clifford J. Villa

Faculty Scholarship

Stretching across the "panhandle" of northern Idaho, the Coeur d'Alene River Basin evokes a mixed sense of wonder. Within this vast region of mountains and marshes, forests and farmland, creeks and canyons, a vibrant mining industry emerged more than a century ago. Along with the mining industry came the mining towns-and the mining pollution. Over time, the volume of mining wastes discharged into waters of the Coeur d'Alene Basin reached Brobdingnagian proportions: enough waste to fill a football field with a pile four miles high.

Remote Sensing Estimates Of Boreal And Temperate Forest Woody Biomass: Carbon Pools, Sources, And Sinks, Jiarui Dong, Robert Kaufmann, Ranga Myneni, Compton Tucker, Pekka Kauppi, Jari Liski, Wolfgang Buermann, V. Alexeyev, Malcolm Hughs Jan 2003

Remote Sensing Estimates Of Boreal And Temperate Forest Woody Biomass: Carbon Pools, Sources, And Sinks, Jiarui Dong, Robert Kaufmann, Ranga Myneni, Compton Tucker, Pekka Kauppi, Jari Liski, Wolfgang Buermann, V. Alexeyev, Malcolm Hughs

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The relation between satellite measurements of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), cumulated over the growing season, and inventory estimates of forest woody biomass carbon is estimated statistically with data from 167 provinces and states in six countries (Canada, Finland, Norway, Russia and the USA for a single time period and Sweden for two periods). Statistical tests indicate that the regression model can be used to represent the relation between forest biomass and NDVI across spatial, temporal and ecological scales for relatively long time scales. For the 1.42 billion ha of boreal and temperate forests in the Northern Hemisphere, the …
