Human Impact On Karst: The Example Of Lusaka (Zambia), Jo De Waele, Roberto Follesa Jan 2003

Human Impact On Karst: The Example Of Lusaka (Zambia), Jo De Waele, Roberto Follesa

International Journal of Speleology

Lusaka, the capital of Zambia with over 2,000,000 inhabitants, is built on an extensive plateau composed mainly of schists and dolomitic marbles, constituting a very important aquifer that provides the city with almost half of its drinking water needs. Recent demographic growth, leading to uncontrolled urban expansion, and mismanagement of the water resource and of urban waste has lead, in the past 20 years, to an overexploitation of the aquifer and to a generalised water quality depletion, putting in serious danger the future social and economical development of the capital. This third world city has, for these reasons, become a …

Clark County Pre-Disaster Mitigation Project: Suggestions For Project Initiation, David M. Hassenzahl Jan 2003

Clark County Pre-Disaster Mitigation Project: Suggestions For Project Initiation, David M. Hassenzahl

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

Attention to several organizational issues will facilitate the efforts of the Clark County regional Pre-Disaster Mitigation project. Key considerations include defining terms efficiently, establishing and maintaining a clear timeline, determining rules for acceptability of new information, determining the nature and boundaries of concerns to be addressed, evaluating a full range of mitigation options, considering how to manage uncertainty, and ensuring stakeholder buy-in and participation. The NOAA seven-step process should serve as an operational template. Project participants should anticipate substantial uncertainty, and consider probabilistic methods (e.g. Monte Carlo analysis) for coping with uncertainty within a GIS framework.

Perspectives On Economic Analyses For High Level Waste Disposal, Helen R. Neill, Robert H. Neill

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

There are both internal and external pressures on the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to reduce costs of disposal and still maintain radiation protection to both present and future generations. The question arises whether both of these goals are attainable.

Neutron Multiplicity Measurements Of Target/Blanket Materials, Carter D. Hull, Denis Beller Jan 2003

Neutron Multiplicity Measurements Of Target/Blanket Materials, Carter D. Hull, Denis Beller

Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)

To optimize the performance of accelerator driven transmutation systems (ADS), engineers will need to design the system to operate with a neutron multiplication factor just below that of a critical, or self-sustaining, system. This design criteria requires particle transport codes that instill the highest level of confidence with minimal uncertainty, because the larger the uncertainties in the codes, the larger the safety margin required in the design and the lower the efficiency of the ADS transmuter. For current design efforts, the MCNPX code is used to determine neutron production and transport for spallation neutron systems.

While providing a very useful …

Comparing Web-Based Instruction To Traditional Instruction For Teaching Special Education Content To General Education Preservice Teachers, Kelly Elizabeth O'Neal Jan 2003

Comparing Web-Based Instruction To Traditional Instruction For Teaching Special Education Content To General Education Preservice Teachers, Kelly Elizabeth O'Neal

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

It has been documented that there are multiple ways to offer teacher preparation course work. Incorporating technology into teacher preparation programs using Web-based instruction may help address obstacles involving distance and time. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of using Web-based instruction as an appropriate method for disseminating information and teaching undergraduates in the college of education about appropriate teaching practices for students with disabilities. Data were collected to answer three specific research questions related to student achievement, student satisfaction, and quality and quantity of discussions; There were 44 undergraduate participants in the study who were …

Factors Associated With The Bioaccumulation Of Mercury In Human Hair Following Consumption Of Fish From The Great Lakes Region, Anne M Rothweiler Jan 2003

Factors Associated With The Bioaccumulation Of Mercury In Human Hair Following Consumption Of Fish From The Great Lakes Region, Anne M Rothweiler

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Due to the ubiquitous nature of mercury in the environment, an increase in potential human health risks arises from exposure to different media. The Great Lakes region, for instance, is an area of known mercury pollution. This project examines the relationship between fish consumption of a sensitive human population and the concentration of mercury in humans using information obtained from the Ojibwa Health Study hair samples and questionnaires, this study focused on the species of fish, the amount of fish, the size of fish, and the geographic source of fish consumed. Also, human factors, such as years of eating Great …

The Distribution Of Phosphorus In The Nature Preserve At The Clark County Wetlands Park In Las Vegas, Nevada, Rosangela Gomes Brazao Jan 2003

The Distribution Of Phosphorus In The Nature Preserve At The Clark County Wetlands Park In Las Vegas, Nevada, Rosangela Gomes Brazao

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the distribution of phosphorus among three different compartments of the Upper Pond at the Nature Preserve at the Clark County Wetlands Park in Las Vegas, NV: influent and effluent water, sediments, and plants. Samples were collected from September 2002 to January of 2003 and analyzed for phosphorus content. Results showed that the Upper Pond removed 55% of the ortho phosphate (OP) and 39% of the total phosphorus (TP) loadings during the study period. Sediment results showed that the East Outflow concentrated the most P (644.85 +/- 120.26 mg P Kg-1), followed …

Study Of Geometry Effects On Local Corrosion Rates For Lbe Loop, Chao Wu Jan 2003

Study Of Geometry Effects On Local Corrosion Rates For Lbe Loop, Chao Wu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Corrosion is an extremely important issue in nuclear cooling system applications. Many scientific and engineering efforts have contributed to the research of finding an ideal material, which has resistance to corrosive Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE). A Delta Loop was designed and constructed in Los Alamos National Lab (LANL) to obtain the experimental data. This loop is a multi-section closed system that differs in diameter from one part to another. As a result, an intensive study on the geometry effect is necessary and valuable. In this thesis, this problem was simulated by commercial software STAR-CD. Results provide a good prediction where …

A Benefit-Cost Analysis Of An Interstate Seawater Desalination Plant Shared Between California And Nevada, Mcclain L Peterson Jan 2003

A Benefit-Cost Analysis Of An Interstate Seawater Desalination Plant Shared Between California And Nevada, Mcclain L Peterson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

According to the Southern Nevada Water Authority (2002), increasing demands for water in southern Nevada will require the importation of additional water resources. The purpose of this thesis was to examine one possible imported resource: an interstate seawater desalination cooperative between entities in California and Nevada. This cooperative would provide a permanent transfer of Colorado River water from California to southern Nevada, in trade for a capital contribution toward California coastal seawater desalination. This study uses a benefit-cost approach as outlined in Dively and Zerbe (1994). Costs of both entities in Nevada and California were calculated and technical feasibility detailed. …
